Gareth - read this

Gareth, if you plan on sticking around and not quitting then listen to me and please keep reading, hear me out.
Here's what you should do:

1. Sell Downing once Spurs bid 15 million at the end of the month, keep playing him in the meantime though. Then play Johnson who is better than he was at this stage of his career anyway (like the Arsenal selling Cashley and having Clichy already situation - no brainer).

2. Sell GON for 5 million to Pompey, accept 4 million if they offer it and cut your losses. He is nothing but a cross-country runner and a very fit young chap. Millions like him. Josh Walker can replace him and seems to be more talented anyway.

3. Sell Mido to Wigan or anybody who comes in with an offer of what we paid for him - quality player but is taking the Michael now. He's not good for a club like us, simple as that. Just look at his games played stats in his time here.

4. Offer Tuncay to Chelsea and the top european clubs for 10 million. He's possibly worth more but a 10 million profit is good enough for someone who is now obviously disrupting the club and wants away, it will get worse and if we don't sell him this month then it will be an ongoing disrupting saga for the next couple of years until we do sell him. Plus, he doesn't really fit in to our team. He isn't an out and out striker and he isn't creating anything as much as he should be.

We'll then have 30-40 million in the bank and a paper thin squad but with no wantaway, disrupting players who will constantly be getting linked away from the club and disrputing the current squad.
Yes, we will have sold a lot of quality and some of our best players, but they've hardly done us proud so far this season have they. Not one of them has shone and done what they're capable of so thank you and goodbye I say. A lot of fans will panic and think we can't sell our best players but they aren't thinking properly. We CAN do without them as they're the ones who have got us where we are. Get the ego's out and watch the rest of the young squad grow in stature as their responsibility grows. I think they will rise to the challenge and survive relegation.
I'd also look at adding to the paper thin squad after selling that lot but obviously, a lot of the money made will stay in the club and help the poor financial position. However, look at buying some of these players who I wouldn't have thought would cost a great amount:

Armand Traore (nice mate for Jez and Didi too)
Marlon Harewood on loan (not a huge fan but I think he'd do a job)
Henri Camara on loan (will score goals for us, available on loan)
Stephen Hunt
James McFadden
Chris Eagles
Gareth Bale (though that might be a bit ambitious)
Michael Kightly
Ben Watson

I will probably get slaughtered by plenty of posters on here but trust me Gareth, I know my stuff.
Anyway, do what you can from the above notes and all the best, be brave.

ps. Forgot to mention, sell Andrew Taylor too for whatever you can.

I actually agree with points 1 to 3 but I would like to keep Tuncay. I would love us to sign Bale as part of the Downing deal and Kightly would be a good signing even though I very much doubt Wolves will sell. We would also need another striker (perhaps Fletcher from Hibs) and a midfield partner for Digard possibly Ben Watson but I've no idea how good he is).

A team as follows could be decent;

Turnbull
Hoyte Huth Wheater Bale
Kightly Digard Watson Johnson
Tuncay Alves

However apparently we are sticking with the same squad for the rest of the season so hey ho.

"Then play Johnson who is better than he was at this stage of his career anyway (like the Arsenal selling Cashley and having Clichy already situation - no brainer)."

this is bollox of the highest order - Downing was absolutely flying at the age Johnson is now, and has been a better player throughout his entire career than Johnson.

Downing 15m+ (Adam Johnson)
GON 5m (Josh Walker)
Mido 6m (Steven Fletcher)
Keep Tuncay if possible
3m bid for Hibs' Steven Fletcher

Armand Traore would be a decent buy
Keep Andrew Taylor

23m in the bank

Up until last week, mc carthy was saying kightley was going nowhere cos newcastle are after him, but they have just signed gow from rangers. Not sure if they both play on the same wing though

I agree with all of that.

Midfield of Harper/ Hunt, Watson and Eagles

Left back Traore

Striker Harewood/ Beattie

Team of

Turnbull
Hoyte Wheater Huth Pog/ Traore

Eagles/Hunt Watson/Harper Digard Johnson

Alves Beattie/ Harewood

This team would certainly get more heart, fight and points then the current crop.

Fletcher would come here? I don't think so. I don't think Man U would sell him either

The current squad is more than capable of reaching mid table respectability this season.

The way some people are going on you'd think we're 5 points adrift at the bottom instead of one win away from 12th..

Gareth? If you are reading this then what on earth are you doing? We are in crisis - you should be out trying to sort it out man. You haven't got time to be sat on your arse looking for the answers on here pal!

I think it makes sense to freshen things up now and again and I'd be happy for fringe players like Mido and O'Neill to move on to fund a couple of new faces.

I'd rather we tried to keep Downing and Tuncay though, at least until the Summer, preferably longer. I've not seen enough of the proposed replacements to have a worthwhile opinion on them.

Christ almighty!

HARPER? HUNT? HAREWOOD???

Watson I wouldnt mind because he seems to be consistently getting good reviews and was pretty good for Palace when they were in the prem. But the rest no thanks. Specially Harper and Hunt and the same goes for O'Hara before someone pipes up with his name. There all just headless chickens who run about alot, no quality at all.

Harewood I wouldnt be too bothered about on loan but surely we can get better.

I totally agree JL.

Because our current squad are good enough aren't they, that's why we are level on points with 18th!

Hunt and Harper are far superior to any Centre Mids we have except Digard.

Add

'Stop this Zonal Marking nonsense when defending corners.'

Word of advice. If you really want someone to read the whole of a long post like that, don't put a piece of absolute nonsense in your very first point.

agree with most points. Eagles from Burnley would be a good buy. Seen him a few times this season and he looks promising.

Thanks for all the feedback, good and bad.
Can I just say to all the people who agreed, well done - you obviously know your football.
To those who don't, it's a shame.

I will change one thing I said actually, I should have said that in terms of appearances or minutes for Boro, Johnson is about preferable to Downing, in my opinion (which is right).

Not_Smog Posted on 06/01/2009 17:28

I think given a run of games in his prefered position Johnson could be much much better then Downing.

He couldn't be any worse then Downing this season thats for sure as he's been totally shyte.

pretty much agree but we have enough wingers still
keep tuncay

wingers then
tuncay L or R
johnson L or R
aliadiare R
golum L if neccessary

josh walker looks like catts which is what we need

alves needs a strike partner to play off

defence looks ok if we bin zonal marking!!!!!!!

"Get the ego's out and watch the rest of the young squad grow in stature as their responsibility grows."

What happens if they don't shine then? Money in the bank is pointless then. Also will they shine like Taylor has:

"ps. Forgot to mention, sell Andrew Taylor too for whatever you can."

I would sell Downing if he wants to go - on the condition those C****neys give us Lennon and cash. If Downing does go and we go down, the fans will never forgive him. He will be viewed as a lifelong Judas like Peter Beagrie, remember him.

Downing you have been warned!!

Senor_Chester - Taylor wouldn't shine in the Northern League.
The other young players aren't as bad as that boy is, it's clear to see for anybody with an ounce of footballing brain.

Never once played Championship Manager, or Football Manager, to those who may be pernickety.
