Swearing Fans in the North Stand

I was sat with my 11 year old daughter yesterday and had to listen to a running commentary of the whole match by 2 idiots who constantly used the cxxx word every 5 minutes. There were lots of other youngsters near us and I cannot understand why people do not use common sense, do we really have to be subjected to this?

boroandproud2 Posted on 23/11/2008 15:52

No but i'm sure YOU could find alternative seating arrangements.

MFC_Riverside Posted on 23/11/2008 15:52

When emotions are running high swearing does occur...

Why don't you take your daughter to an area of the stadium that might not be so foul-mouthed?

King_Ricard Posted on 23/11/2008 15:53
Swearing Fans in the North Stand

Agreed, swearing at football? What next...

The dermographic of football is no longer young lads it is children.

People should be more considerate if kids are around.

Think this is a wind up?

If not mm40 why don't you sit in THE FAMILY STAND?

Genghis_Khan Posted on 23/11/2008 15:54
Swearing Fans in the North Stand

mm40 whilst I appreciate you don't wish your daughter to hear bad language. (An impossible task at a football game)... Why on earth would you sit in the north stand?

That's 'supposed' to be the more vocal/sweary/aggresive stand. Too many kids and women have diluted that.

King_Ricard Posted on 23/11/2008 15:54
Swearing Fans in the North Stand

Actually, isnt that what the family area is for?

mm40 Posted on 23/11/2008 16:01
Swearing Fans in the North Stand

so I need to move because of 2 morons who cannot consider other people around them???? been going to football matches for over 30 years now and tbh people use to have some manners before but not any more, at the emirates you are ejected if caught using foul and abusive language by the stewards.

dave_boro Posted on 23/11/2008 16:01
Swearing Fans in the North Stand

yes it is. too many families lasses young kids etc are in the north now and like or not the atmosphere has diluted as a result. thats why the family stand was put in place to accomodate these families without losing any atmosphere. sadly the atmosphere is going

King_Ricard Posted on 23/11/2008 16:02
Swearing Fans in the North Stand

To be honest thats awful. The efforts to re-market football into all ages entertainment is ripping the heart and soul out of the game.

I have no problems with young kids going to the game, but to activley target people who swear is to far.

Midosparmo Posted on 23/11/2008 16:03
Swearing Fans in the North Stand

I dont swear when kids are around and being at football isnt an excuse, The North is full of kids as is allowed.

Borat_BORO Posted on 23/11/2008 16:04
Swearing Fans in the North Stand

I cant believe people complain when others swear behind the goal....ITs a football match and passions run high and when things like yesterday happen, people will swear. I was swearing and got told to mind my language. I sit in block 26a and its pathetic, If you dont want to hear swearing then move away from the north stand, That is why the atmosphere is crap, to many people just want to sit there with a coffee and blanket

mm40 Posted on 23/11/2008 16:07
Swearing Fans in the North Stand

I do not sit behind the goal our seats are side on to the goal, so that argument does not stack up. My kids are not subjected to bad language at home or at school, so whats different about football?

Midosparmo Posted on 23/11/2008 16:08
Swearing Fans in the North Stand

The north stand should be adult only, but while its not you should be able to act in a manner of a civilised adult whilst kids are around.

King_Ricard Posted on 23/11/2008 16:08
Swearing Fans in the North Stand

What about swearing in songs?

Does that concern you aswell? Serrious question.

sixtyniner69 Posted on 23/11/2008 16:09
Swearing Fans in the North Stand

I sit in the cheap seats and considering you can sit elsewhere , please do so.

I do not like swearing in front of children and try my utmost not to do so.

but if you want a family area move to the east stand north east corner.

its like going in the public bar and complaining about drunks, if you ban me from the lounge ok I accept it but the north stand is where swearing occurs.

I do not complain that I can not go in to the box area wearing my Boro shirt.

aye, at newcastle away last season, probably the most vocal/agressive games of the season some family were satnexttome with a 5 year old, the woman gave people filthy looks for swearing-what do you expect, its an away match against ur biggest rivals, of course there will be swearing! FFS, if you dont like it go to home games and sit in the west upper

SirHumptyofDumpty Posted on 23/11/2008 16:10

I'm with the consensus here mm40. You shouldn't have taken your kids in the north stand. Family stand would've been a much safer more sensible choice, especially if you concerns about people swearing in front of your kids.

Its no different, but at football it can be expected because it sometimes happens. If you are surprised, shocked, and saddened then you should expect to be surprised shocked and saddened on an intermittent basis based upon on the ratio of games that you and your children attend.

aka S*** happens...

If you were sat at the back of the North Yesterday (Block 17), then it is likely the person you are refering to is me, if it was me then I apologise; but when you pay £390 a season to watch the rubbish that we are currently having to endure on a regular basis at home (come on...going two goals down after 8 mins) then you would be as irrate as I was yesterday. Like I said I certainly wasn't setting out to deliberately upset anyone, but on reflection probably did.....Football is no longer a passionate game and perhaps we should all go and sit in the west and be quiet.

"You swear in font of kids Humpty? Though of course you may still be one and think its big."

Of course i don't but you need to realise it's a football match and it comes with it's own culture. You accept this to an extent when you walk through the turnstile. If you think this is thefirst instance of a grown man swearing in front of a kid i think you are the naive one.

Like someone said what about the songs though. We have quite a few songs that involve swearing, there is always going to be swearing at a football stadium.

smifter Posted on 23/11/2008 16:49
Swearing Fans in the North Stand

I am going to go slightly in support of mm40 here. Although I do not think the North stand was a wise move of choice of seats (one of the reasons I do not sit there) I restrain my behaviour/words depending on who is around me. Yes people can swear, yes people can sing. But in my view rightly or wrongly some swear words are more socially acceptable than others, and if I was sat anywhere in the ground (or anywhere in any walk of life) with a child and someone around us was using the "c" word excessively I would not be too impressed.

delgrapos Posted on 23/11/2008 16:53
Swearing Fans in the North Stand

What's wrong with the word c**k anyway, it's only a male hen

SirHumptyofDumpty Posted on 23/11/2008 16:56
Swearing Fans in the North Stand

I'd agree excessive use of the c word is ott and is not a word i use myself in public ([:D]) but football is a pasionate sport and instant reactional actions are sometimes hard to control. In an instant where a child is about, an unfortunate consequence of this can be them hearing something that they might not have head had they been to the cinema say.

I found myself three times out of my seat swearing at the action sat in the west lower, it happens and i'm not ashamed of it.

1
When Britain first, at Heaven's command
Arose from out the azure main;
This was the charter of the land,
And guardian angels sang this strain:
"Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
"Britons never will be slaves."
2
The nations, not so blest as thee,
Must, in their turns, to tyrants fall;
While thou shalt flourish great and free,
The dread and envy of them all.
"Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
"Britons never will be slaves."
3
Still more majestic shalt thou rise,
More dreadful, from each foreign stroke;
As the loud blast that tears the skies,
Serves but to root thy native oak.
"Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
"Britons never will be slaves."
4
Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame:
All their attempts to bend thee down,
Will but arouse thy generous flame;
But work their woe, and thy renown.
"Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
"Britons never will be slaves."
5
To thee belongs the rural reign;
Thy cities shall with commerce shine:
All thine shall be the subject main,
And every shore it circles thine.
"Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
"Britons never will be slaves."
6
The Muses, still with freedom found,
Shall to thy happy coast repair;
Blest Isle! With matchless beauty crown'd,
And manly hearts to guard the fair.

You know when your sitting in the North stand that bad language will be used.

Like it has already been said, that is what the family stands are there for.

If you are ejected for using foul language at the Emirates, then it just goes to show the sorry state in which football is in.

If someone was effing and blinding in the West stand then fair enough, its not acceptable, but the North stand is "supposed" to be where the atmosphere is. There is no atmosphere and one of the reasons is because there are too many families, women and kids sat in there.

Im all for a Riverside stadium that is safe for families to go to, where the threat of hooliganism isnt there but FFS leave the North stand to those that want to swear, sing etc etc

as a young boy my father used to take me there to watch the boro whilst i heard the swearing around me my father said it was never to be repeated outside the ground or my mother would stop me going!!! also it has not had a detromental effect on me whatsoever, football matches have less swearing nowadays but you will never stop it so either get over it or move seats or watch it on tv. no sympathy here.

No offence or anything but taking an 11 year old girl into the north stand wasn't the wisest of moves. There's plenty of other seats available where she wouldn't be subjected to this kind of langauge. In an ideal world (for you) no-one would swear in a football stadium but unfortunatly (for you) this is what happens. If anything it's bad parenting on your part and I don't think you're in any position to complain as putting an 11 year old girl in that situation to hear this langauge is just as bad as those who use it.

That isn't me trying to wind you up it's my honest opinion on the matter, I certainly wouldn't take my 9 year old cousen into the north stand.

MFC1967 Posted on 23/11/2008 18:12

I dont think its 'bad parenting' taking a youngster to a game where there will be bad language..... all you need to do is educate the child correctly that the bad language must not be copied or repeated ..... or else no more footie matches for them.

we all know what to expect at any match but maybe mm40
is on about the 'constant' foul language during the game .

Speaking as a lass, and an older generation lass at that (60+) I sit in North Stand, just in front of my sons. When they found out that I had changed my seat and would be just in front of them the reaction was 'Mum don't you dare complain if we swear' and I never have. I used to work in a school as a dinner nanny and have never heard anything worse in North Stand than I did in school, and the children were from age four and a half. It still beats me what these words are supposed to add to a conversation [:)].

2 behind me bring 4 kids aged about 6-8 with them. Every time the shout or sing there's an f, c or b in it.

Before they started bringing the kids every game they seemed normal middle aged blokes, maybe it's the kids that brings it out of them.

I'm with the majority here. I'm a North Stand season ticket holder who had my two young nephews over from Ireland at half term and they asked to go to the game. I agreed to take them along and took them to the Man City game but swapped seats to sit in the East Stand. Too young to be subject to the expected level of bad language in my normal seats.

On a related point I took my 11 year old daughter to see Billy Elliot in the West End a few weeks back. Was told there would be some bad language but from speaking to a couple of people who'd seen it I thought she'd probably be OK. I think she's probaably heard the swear words a few times now she is at senior school. A bit surprised and shocked when half way through she asked "Dad what is a wankker?"

there aren't enough people who say C*** at football matches nowadays. C*** C*** C*** C***!
they should actively start chucking people out of the north stand who dont use the word C*** with great frequency.
just F*** off to the west stand or the east stand. no one says C*** in there. or F*** or bugger either.
if they want to improve the atmosphere they should stop concessions in the north, sell dirt cheap beer in there, put in a smoking area, and have the stewards tell people where to sit and nothing else. let the familys sit in the family stand and have the kids who want to make a bit of noise in the south, pay a fiver on the day.

Just what did you expect in the north stand?
Can't beleive you are so naive.
30%(guess) of Boro songs are full of swear words.
Are they allowed to sing along. Are your kids killing the atmosphere?

Sherrif John - If its any help I used up my allocation of C*** on Saturday, usually in the same sentance as the word Alves for some reason. In fact it could have been described as a bit of a running commentary.

You might just get away with taking an 11 year old son in the North, but absolutely crazy to take a little girl in there and then complain when there's bad language! Go in the South! or East or West.

Lets get to grips with mm40 complaint

Move you foookin idiot and next week put ear muffs over your daughters lugs when most of the fans sing

"have you ever seen a jawdeeee lift a cup"

Dibzzz Posted on 24/11/2008 09:17

There's the West stand and the South stand you know? It's to be expected in the North, so don't take you're kids in there if you feel you're going to be offended, simple as that.

You'll never stop the swearing in the North so no point complaining about it really.

My lads 4, I'm considering taking him to an FA cup game to break him in, I'm a season ticket in the North, but for that game I'll be getting tickets for the East or South. Just sensible parenting isn't it?

I love the general impression of the West Stand atmosphere and clientele on here.

It gives you the best view of the game, is not full of doddery old men with cushions, flasks nor blankets (admittedly there are a few) - there is even swearing, you crazy north standers.

If you know which block to sit in you can get also get instant TV replays from the media screens up at the top of the stand.

Oh and the best bit mm40, you are an awful long way from "c*nting" chavs you refer to.

Dibzzz, it is a bit, i agree with you - however i'm based down south, so when I do come home I like a bit of sensibility up in the West Upper.

I also like the fact that i don't find myself getting wound up by the type of people mm40 is referring to - the team do a good job of that by themselves without having that extra aggro.

Having seen your game on the telly over the weekend with the masses and masses of empty seats, you could have moved and virtually had a whole stand to yourself without subjecting any of your clan to anything other than the sound of tumbleweed.

Please tell me this is a wind up about swearing at football?

see you saturday LOL

I will be home for the Everton game you sensitive little puppy and by that time you might have come to your good parenting senses by taking your daughter to a more suitable area as I doubt for the 2 seasons you have being going in the north stand that this is the first time your daughter has been subject to foul language.

What a Loooon

mm40, you unfortunately only have yourself to blame for this and should take a look at your decision making. You are complaining about foul and abusive language around your children. You can not tell me that you are so naive to not realise that this takes place in football stadiums around the country and then to take you kids to the most vocal and aggressive stand in the Riverside.

It is down to your actions and decisions that your kids now have a greater vocabulary. I believe you made a wrong choice and are regretting it, so you are now choosing to pass the blame.

As you do i got married and had kids, did i take them in the Holgate ? No I took them in the seats by the players entrance

Did you complain to the stewards or to the club? Maybe they can do something about it? MFC are trying to make the match day experience more family friendly.

This has to be a joke. I swear at football matches, I sit in the NE corner, if someone told me to stop Id tell em to F*** right off.

You should have been sat up near me for the Bolton game, when calls of; "Linesman Im gonna rape your daughter" and "Lino you bald prick, I hope you die" were heard more than once.

Get over it its a football match.

woody - how old are you with insults? I am not naive to know there is swearing in all parts of the ground but when the person is sat directly behind my kids calling downing and any other boro player who misplaced a pass a cxxt every 5 minutes and at the same time spitting, my kids had to wipe it their clothes and were hiding their drink and food in case it ended up in it, imo there is no need for it.

Can I suggest we have a minutes silence to commemorate the passing of football.

In 1972, if you went in the "popular" end you would quite likely end up with some skinhead P***ing down the back of your leg, fag burns on the back of your neck and being blasted by a face full of boozy breath.

You had to wear Doc Marten's or Rider's (Dealer's north of the river) so as to not lose your shoes.

Your feet would be over by the South Stand corner and your shoulders by the Chicken Run.

I crave for those days.

Reclaim the game.

It's no wonder more and more of the old generation of fans aren't bothering anymore and I can't blame them.

When you get your way mm40 I hope your happy sat there in silence until you get a chance to have a polite clap at the end.

I bet you only go in the north stand to spite yourself anyway so you can have a good moan at all those nasty yobs swearing their heads off.

Thornaby_Boro Posted on 24/11/2008 13:16
Swearing Fans in the North Stand

I sit in the North Stand and swear constantly. Its not something I'm particularly proud of, but then again Im not particularly ashamed either. I don't swear in the house often nor do I swear at work, but on a Saturday I like a few pints before the game and let off a bit of steam at the match. If you turned round and asked me to stop because of your daughter, I'd like to think I'd apologise but as soon as I saw another bad decision I know I would up swearing again, its almost instinctive. The only option is to move.

Buddy Posted on 24/11/2008 13:34
Swearing Fans in the North Stand

I wondered why I was getting funny looks for pointing out to the linesman that he should be watching the F***ing line from my vantage point in the West Upper.

My view on this is, my upbringing was about as staid, middle-class and Methodist as you can get, I went to Captain Cook School which at the time thought it was Repton, and I was f-ing and more with the best of them by the time I was about 8.

I can't believe that "standards" have improved markedly in the intervening 20 years or so, so I would suggest that unless your daughter goes to a convent school she is unlikely to have previously escaped most of the language you will hear in a football ground.

Furthermore, as the sheriff said above, if avoiding bear S*** is your primary purpose in life then it would be sensible to avoid wooded areas.

mm40 Posted on 24/11/2008 13:38
Swearing Fans in the North Stand

chester it works both ways and tbh it has nothing to do with why the older generation do not bother, a lot of that is down to the prices for premiership football and what is on offer at the riverside.

sambaDTR Posted on 24/11/2008 13:45

It's a good job there is no violence at matches nowadays or you would have something to complain about. As far as the swearing is concerned I rarely swear at work, home etc but unfortunately I do at football matches. It is not my fault. I blame the rubbish football that is being served up by millionaire footballers and bad decisions by the ref and linesmen. If we were top of the league and won every cup and the referee never made a bad decision then I wouldn't swear. So blame them not me!

Must admit would not take my kids in the North Stand however I now sit in the East Upper and have found myself swearing more and more often this season :)Tends to be a one off outburst like when our manager takes off 2 forwards when we are 0-2 down and I just have to shout that he is fooking clueless:)

On Saturday group of lads behind us were P***ed up and really letting go which is unusual for the East does not bother me but it is now the family stand I think.

Lastly I am sure Gibbo quoted last year said something like :

When women go to football the men behave better, when the men behave better the kids come along and we have a better atmosphere.

No we don't we have 10,000 empty seats because the men do not go which means they do no take the women or kids either!

ccole Posted on 24/11/2008 14:09

I sit in the east stand with my lad. I dont swear much in front of him, but dont have a problem with others swearing at a match as its what I expect from a football crowd, as long as its not too OTT.

To think that she doesnt hear worse at school and in the street would be naive.
