WHIPPING BOY.

Great band. Bunnymen (latterly) meets Cherry Ghost (here and now) and sank without trace. Their last album was a belter.

I've got a few Whipping Boy singles...good band.

I reckon one of the most underated bands of the Cure/Bunnymen/U2 era is The Chameleons.

Interpol and Editors wouldn't have a career if it wasn't for them!.

Have a listen to Swamp Thing.

The Breeders.

Fooking brilliant alternative/rock/pop band, they were a side project band formed by Kim Deal of the Pixies until she made it her permanent musical project.

I'm the only person i know who likes them, and i've never heard anyone speak favourably of them, well, apart from Kurt Cobain.

'The album [The Breeders debut, Pod] also was famously quoted by Kurt Cobain as one of his favorite records ever: "The main reason I like [The Breeders] is for their songs, for the way they structure them, which is totally unique, very atmospheric. I wish Kim was allowed to write more songs for the Pixies, because "Gigantic" is the best Pixies song, and Kim wrote it." '

Good news.

Breeders and Blue Aeroplanes are very good shouts.

Spizzenergi.(or Spizzles, Athletico Spizz 80 etc)

Where's Captain Kirk, Soldier Soldier, No Room, Central Park - They should have been massive, instead their only claim to fame is that they were the first Indie No.1.

The Twang??? Fook off you numpty! They deserve to be ignored.

Whilst they are far from ignored now they certainly were at the time they were making their best records, "them" being The Velvet Underground and The Stooges.

I must admit, I thought The Twang suggestion was a wind up.

Towelie Posted on 29/10/2008 00:44
Bands you liked but who were largely ignored

I loved the Breeders back when they released their first two albums but got bored of them long ago. Still good, just wore them out.

I could name tons of music here because I listen to very little that is considered mainstream but I will offer the Afghan Whigs, whose Gentleman album is probably my favourite of all time and Mos Def whose Black on Both Sides is an absolute classic as examples of artists in two genres who were critically acclaimed but largely ignored by the dummies who make up most of the world's music consumers.

Yeah, Towelie is one of those coonts who thinks because he listened to a band that wears straw hats and presses the music on petrified ostrich shyte he's hip/cool/rad.

Come across bellends like him before who deliberately won't listen to anything that makes top 40 in the album charts because they like to maintain they're unique and that they're music tastes are quirky.

Knob! I hope he chokes on his fooking wheatgrass juice.

Towelie Posted on 29/10/2008 01:35

Christ, don't take it so personally nor so seriously. It wasn't an attack on you or anyone here. For every Rolling Stones or Radiohead there are tons of Chris Daughtry/Carrie Underwood/Fergie/Hanna Montana/Britney/NSYNC/Celine Dion/etc. garbage that the majority will eat up. If I'm offending your tastes there then my most sincere apologies, "son".

Other, more recent suggestions of artists who should be much bigger than they are would be Okkervil River (particularly the Black Sheep Boy album), Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens (Illinois), Beirut, Grizzly Bear and M. Ward.

m. ward is a great shout...

I hope suggesting Frank Turner is based on more than the awful "Long live the Queen" song I heard on the radio the other day, Christ it was terrible!

I know it's a personal tribute to a friend who died but however heartfelt the sentiment is, it doesn't excuse the dreadful lyrics set to a twee tune.

Like Towlie Im one of those F***ing cool people with loads of taste. I either listen to stuff which is mainstream, but generally thought of as S***e by people who aren't really in a place to judge what is S***e or not, like girls aloud and abba. and by the way girls aloud should be much much bigger than they are. they've barely charted outside of the UK. Or stuff by german people or japanese folk and avant garde stuff that none of you would have enough taste to understand.

So many to choose from. I love STYX who are massive in the states but very few people here know them. I could also say Sweet who though they were massive at one time, their best music is largely unkown to most people.

I was tempted to say Russ Ballard as well seeing as he's written some classic rock anthems like god Gave Rock And Roll To You, I Surrender, Since You've Been Gone and New York Groove, but I think I'll go for this band.

Towelie, I think everyone likes to be unique in some way or other about the music they listen to, however purposefully not listening to stuff that goes mainstream is pointless. Mostly because most of it is absolutely shyte, otherwise it would have been taken notice of.

I think that song is alright to be honest... nowhere near his best but still decent andall the money raised frm it isgoing to charity so fair play. but no Its based on the two albums he's released and the ephe brought out which are all flipping brilient if you ask me. million dead were pretty good as well.

Towelie Posted on 29/10/2008 11:16

I listen to plenty of music which enjoyed/enjoys mainstream success. But for quite a while now the vast majority of new music that I enjoy listening to sadly doesn't earn a lot of mainstream recognition. I don't purposefully refuse to listen to mainstream stuff and it's absolutely ridiculous to even suggest that. I was elated for Arcade Fire to reach the point of recognition they did with Funeral. Same with Radiohead, Common, Kanye West, Sigur Ros and several others.

I *want* the music I love to earn money for the artists. I just think it's sad that the likes of Chris Daughtry or Good Charlotte can move so many units while a lot of people with far more talent, more often than not, never will.

I really don't think I should have to explain such an obvious thing.

'I loved the Breeders back when they released their first two albums but got bored of them long ago. Still good, just wore them out.'

I was the same as you mate, after Last Splash i basically forgot about them until a couple of years ago, i found the Last Splash CD lying around and had a listen to it and remembered how good it was, i then found out that they had released another album (Title TK) and that was really good, so i ended up downloading some of their rare stuff and live shows and i ended up getting back into them.

I even got to see them in April at the Sheffield Leadmill and they were fooking brilliant.

Some real blasts from the past here. Quite a few I've been very keen on over the years.

The Men They Couldn't Hang are one of my fave all time bands. Have travelled the length and breadth of the land to see them too.

The Daintees were wonderful - still doing the odd show every now and again.

As for Okkervil River, oI did try to get them here (around the time they played The Brudenell SC in Leeds) but couldn't get anywhere with their agent. They had Jaymay supporting on the tour so it would have been a great gig.

Waltones - saw them supporting someone at the Riverside. They were excellent. Red Guitars - had forgotten all about them. Didn't they support SLF at some stage? My memory is fading I think.

I'm sure Blue Aeroplanes had a track re-released a couple of years back? Possibly to promote a 'Best Of' comp.

Here's another band who were excellent and again sank...

great stuff unfortunately missed the 2nd gig as I had other plans in Leeds. so would be great to see them again.

met johnny at the said show and he's a top fella even gave me a free Cd of their peel sessions.

How did you go about starting up your gig promotion nights if you don't mind me asking? I'm currently attempting to set up a monthly night in Leeds and getting local bands on is pretty easy but am struggling to get acts from further a field to agree especially those that are signed? is it better to sort it out through their record label rather than the band directly? (as you've probably guessed I'm new to this side of things, always just been somebody who attends gigs rather than puts them on)

Late to this thread...

Thunder - best Rock Debut of 1999 and then along came Grunge and F***ed it up for them. Still around and still releasing and still touring.

Cherry Bombz - How they never broke through I'll never know.

spartakus...Clint (lead singer from P.W.E.I.)used to follow the psychedelic furs in the early 80s, i did much the same, so i was a regular @ poppie gigs.

his in Los Angeles these days, he does film scores and soundtracks...his had a lot of success and critical acclaim, a sound lad back in the day.

last saw him a bar in Brighton in the early 90s.

Funnily enough badge I've been trying for a good while now but I've been getting nowhere with their agent. We missed out on the tour that's just finishing (although I don't know why) and I'm hoping we can get something sorted for early in the new year. The band know of our interest though.

I'm loving the album. The last track on it is brilliant too - very well done with loads of reference points from the past.

They remind me (in part) of the Blaggers ITA circa 1992/3 which really does it for me.

Long thread!

I'll go for Talk Talk and Nick Drake (not a band, mind)

Two groups mentioned:

Mekons - my mate in Camden Town used to go out with one of the band members.

Breeders. Saw Kim play with the Pixies a few years ago. She couldn't keep the smile from her face watching so many people loving the Pixies so much/ Oh and Cannonball is awsesome. Happy memories in that nightclub that used to be above where Woolworths was.

Another shout for the Breeders from GameOfTwoAlves. [:)]

Before this thread started i knew of two people who liked the Breeders (me and Kurt Cobain, i knew there were more, obviously, but i hadn't heard of any).
Now there's four or five of us in the Breeders appreciation society.

Get in!!!

By the way GameOfTwoAlves have you heard any of The Amps stuff? it's another side project band of Kim Deals and they are really good.

KH. I wouldn't be surprised if it was good stuff. She seems to be a top music person.

BTW The breeders were one of the groups from my 'second youth' in the mid Nineties (my 20's.) Nirvana, RATM, Red Hot Chili Peppers were others of that era. 'Crossover' was the genre name I think.

I think that movement brought alternative/rock back into the mainstream. The Eighties were a sad era music-wise. There were a handful of good bands only (and half of them were from the aftermath of punk, the 'new wave' like Talking Heads.) U2, the Smiths, Echo and the Bunnymen and, of course, the Pixies were some of the others.

In fact, Nirvana probably wouldn't have existed without the Pixies. Kim really is the real Deal!
