Not quite Boro centre, but it was sad to drive through Acklam one weekday afternoon before Christmas and see that the entire row of shops near The Endeavour were boarded up and out of use.

My gran lived round the corner from those in the 70s and 80s, and I used to spend every weekend there. They were great - Shipman's Bakery on the end (where mutant vanilla slices greaw to outlandish proportions), Murray's Newsagents next to it (where I bought all my Panini stickers and Star Wars Weekly), then I think were was a butcher and possibly a grocers as well, before you got to top 1970s supermarket Hinton's on the corner.

All human life was there. And usually a few beady-eyed dogs hanging round the butchers as well. How long have they all been boarded up?

CHIPS is not only on Borough Road, it's in over 30 other places as well - it's a brilliant Middlesbrough success story. Stores all over the country, all started from that little upstairs shop in Linthorpe Road. I used to play Double Dragon up there every Saturday. The Borough Road branch is now the national head office, still run by the two same blokes.

Piquet - yeah, very sad. It was definitely a weekday afternoon a few weeks ago, and every single shopfront just had the metal shutters down. First time I'd been past there during the day for a few years, and it was all looking a bit rundown then, but it looks like it's died a death now. I guess not enough people use little shops any more! Thought there might have been a corner shop still clinging on, though. [:(]

Fischer - the shops in Tollesby have been shut down about a year. Apparently the leases were up and the owner wanted to cash in and build apartments. There was only Spar left open in the end anyway i think, the garage at the back still has it's lease running and the lad who owns it has refused to move(good for him) so that's why it's been left like it is.

I'm definitely showing my age now but, I remember when there was a hardware shop called Allen's Stores, on the premises that is now Central Park on Linthorpe Road. My nana used to live on Ayresome Street and when I was a kid I used to go in there with her and be amazed by the sheer amount of goods on display, it seemed as if there was nothing that you couldn't buy there.
Rea's ice cream parlour was just a few doors away as well and she used to take me in there for a knickerbockerglory sometimes.

Dunno!

There's an S&M shop in Plymouth called Westward Bound... I liked that one almost as much as the chippy called 'In Cod We Trust.'

So... Nelson's anybody?

In Northampton we have a furniture shop called "Sofa King". Their slogan is "Our prices are sofa king cheap, you can't afford to go anywhere else". That's true that is.

"I also remember years ago going in a cafe which had a goldfish pond in it and a little bridge over it, can't remember the name but I think it was somewhere on Linthorpe Road near Uptons or the old bowling alley. Anyone know where I'm talking about?"

That's made my head go all swimmy. I've got really vague memories of being taken in there when I was very small, probably late 70s or so. It was definitely on Linthorpe Road, that's all I can remember. I was fascinated by the water feature though!

Fischer,

I can remember a cafe on Corporation Road with a fish pond and a bridge (though it only led to the wall). Is that the one? It was still there up until about ten years ago maybe as I used to pop my head in to check it was still there every once in a while.

I can remember when Colin Cheng's takeaway was an Italian milk bar - I was so young I was scared by the noise from the steam frother.

The original Fred Humphries died in the 80's.
Think his son took over.

Had my first bike bought second hand from Henry's, always seemed to smell of tomato soup when I went in there, weird sort of Peter Cushing type character he was, balding with wisps of white hair at the sides and a dark blue boiler suit, with oil ingrained fingers from years of handling broken bike chains. Along from there towards the church was a weird shop selling stamps, owned by an ex army type with a fantastic handle bar moustache, always wore a blazer with a regimental tie and badge, think he used to sell tropical fish too, or that might be a different shop.

Just caught up with this thread.
The fish pond cafe I remember was definitely on Linthorpe Road. My head swims a bit with the memory too Fischer, I was only a small kid when I went in there.
Camperman - was Gaskins in the old bowling alley (ie the one on the first floor in the block opposite Uptons?) Don't think I ever went to Gaskins. If it was then that is definitely the one.

yep it was under gaskins (old bowling alley / skatepark)i can remember we never had a familly car so me mam and dad went to frankie dees shopping so we used to go to the cafe with a bridge and fish pond at the other end of the block before we went and did the weekly shop.
i miss that skatepark now as well, we were just getting big into skateboards in the 70s when they shut it down and i can remember riding the bowl and putting my board thru the roof when i came of it, all pretty tame compared to some of the death defying stuff they can do now, at 41 i still ride but not to the standard as some of these kids do

Thanks camperman, sometimes you think you dream these things until someone says, yep that was there at the end of that street.
I remember the bowling alley and going in and thinking 'wow' when I was very small.
A part of Middlesbrough I used to really like was around the old baths near Binns and the United bus station. There was always a great buzz round there or it seemed that way when I was little. My mam used to take me to Reas Cafe opposite the bus station for a beefburger before we got the bus home. It was a bit of a reward for me putting up with C and A's for an hour...

So there were two cafes with goldfish ponds in? Both with bridges. Which one was the original? I can remember when Central Park was a hardware store - owned by one of the Dicken brothers I think.

How about Don Miller's bakery? Which is where Burger King is/was and replaced Tomothy Whites when they were bought out by Boots.

Is Jack Hatfield's still going? Ah.. the smell of a proper sports shop.
