...Some good points, especially with regards to Robinson and how he just needed a chance...

If pearsy says it its good enough for me.

Link: Southgate...

Difference being that when Robinson was given his chance they still had Nigel Martyn to fall back on.

We haven't got an established keeper waiting in the wings.

This is possibly the hour and a half chat on BBC between Southgate and Brownlee that someone posted the other day. Quite interesting especially the few ill advised comments from a caller about the "coloured lad" who played in defence, and how Downing and Johnson were now "saleable". Bit of a "knowledgeable" chap the caller.

Barraca - It is, its extracts from the Radio tees thing...

I didn't here it myself so can't comment on the caller though [:D]

What I don't understand is why didn't he give one of them a run last season then?

Big Shot, despite what anyone else says I think Southgate thought Schwarzer would stay.

Bill, so why haven't gone and replaced him, then??

It's not like he hung around for a long time after the end of the season??

I know why they didn't, there was a far better keeper at the club. But when the manager talks about giving them a chance why didn't he feel they were deserving last season, or why did he want to keep Schwarzer.

i think southgate needs trusting more, he hasn't let us down yet, and i am sure if he came in your job saying you're doing this and that wrong, you would be P***ed off, he knows what he is doing, and all th egoalkeeping staff seem to think turnbull is up for it, but he must make sure he doesnt chop and change them, that would unsettle the defence

Big_Shot Posted on 31/07/2008 11:16

I've got quite a few issues over the keeper situation. But what Southgate says now contradicts everything he has done through his spell as manager. He wanted to sell Jones last January, now he deserves a chance.

I think we were going to give someone else a run Big_shot,but after the odd disastrous game we decided it wasn't worth getting relegated just to prove a point.[:D] Maybe if we nearly reach the end of August and the same thing happens, then Southgate might put his job before his principals.

captain. Obviously Southgate has a capped budget and maybe foolhardily has underestimated the importance of having a good goalkeeper.
In keeping with his meek and mild ways, whatever is said to him from upstairs goes.

Well I hope from his point of view he has some assurances from above that if the worst does happen, he is suitably compensated as the fans chase him out the door.

I'd have a little bit more faith in this decision if after the Man City game he thanked Schwarzer but said we're not offering him a new deal as he thinks we have 2 top keepers here already. Instead he was hoping he'd sign the new deal we offered him.

Both keepers can sign for new clubs in January, thats how high he previously thought of them.

captain5 Posted on 31/07/2008 11:27

Exactly. He must be expecting to lose at least one of them in the next year.

Why aren't one or both of them tied up??

It could be the one who plays well *pretends to be religious and prays that one will* who ends up leaving.

i still think he will bring someone in on a years loan at the last minute. at the moment i think he wants to keep 1 out of jones and turnbull but is undecided and using preseason to have a look at them. Southgate does change his mind or go back on what he says in the media so dont be surprised if we get a new keeper. but probably not an expensive signing. I just dont think the funds are there to spend 3m+ on a keeper as he wants to buy a midfielder instead

I get the impression that they know who the next Schwarzer will be, but Jason Steele is perhaps too young at the moment. I think he is the keeper GS sees as the most promising of the three and that Turnbull and Jones are keeping the gloves warm.

The goal the other night was another example of Jones innefficiencies...and i find it hard to believe that Pearsy,Southgate and everyone else at the club seem to think he has what it takes.Maybe hes a training ground goalkeeper...i dunno...i really hope he/they prove all us doubters wrong!

captain5 Posted on 31/07/2008 11:36
THIS makes interesting reading for me...

That's a very risky strategy.

He'd be better off getting an experienced keeper in for the next few years. Steele is not yet 18.

how old is jones? at his age club should have already known if he was good enough by now. i was surprised he got given a 2 year contract under southgate. all i can think of his wages are cheap and another back up keeper would cost a lot more.

If Jones really shines, then he will probably be fixed as the Aussies' number one for the next 10 years and he will be entitled to all Antipodean jollies which go with the position - let's hope Turnball comes up trumps.

Why can't I correct my contributions?

I meant Turnbull not Ball,Freudian slip if anyone's interested.[;)]

I'd like to make a note of the point that Southgate said Mido let himself down with his weight issue last year. I do believe Scoea argued it wasn't Mido's fault and he should not be blamed (smug smiley)
