| SLAVEN AN SATURDAY | |
When Ally asked him what he would do when we were 3-0 up, he said he'd take Hasselbaink OFF and rest him for Thursday. But he was on his hat trick, Bernie, doh.

He probably didn't want him to break his top flight away day hat trick record.

Yeah it said in the News of the World that McClaren was preparing the substitute Hasselbaink and play Nemeth on his own up front to rest Hasselbaink obviously for the Egaleo tie. But hes a professional footballer and what difference does 15 more minutes make to his fitness? It baffles me when managers take players off with 20 minutes to go to "rest" them for a game 5 days away!

One of Slaven's biggest criticisms of McLaren has been taking strikers off when they had scored twice ("If he'd have done that to me as a manager I would have been banging his office door down" I believe was the exact phrase used) so either he was being mischievous or spectacularly hypocritical.

In answer to the "why take players off with 20 minutes to go to "rest" them?" question. I've read a couple of times that a high proportion of football injuries occur in the last quarter of games. As players get tired they are more likely to over-stretch, slip, or mistime challenges.

The only times McClaren has done it this season have been because of Viduka's on going injury problems.

The theory behind taking players off with fifteen minutes to go, is that according to stats, players are more likely to get injured in the last fifteen minutes due to tiredness. Particularly with players who have not been playing regularly or are returning from an injury. I've heard it said that what happened was that SteveMac "asked" Jimmy if he wanted to come off and was told "No" and that was the end of the matter. It's not quite the same is it?
