Old Holgate Songs?

When I was just a little boy
I asked my mother, what should I be
Should I be jawdee, should I be scouse
Here's what she said to me

Be Boro, Boro
And always be loyal and true
The Boro's the team for you
Be Boro, Boro

As a young Boro fan (I'm 24 and have supported the Boro since I was 10) I have always looked up to the older Boro fans and wondered what it would have been like to stand in the Holgate end on a match day!

NOT ANYMORE!! THANK YOU GUYS! YOU HAVE MADE ME REALISE WHAT A PACK OF NEANDERTHALS SOME OF THE OLDER BORO FANS ARE - THE SONGS ARE SICK AND RIVAL CITY's SICK CHANT THE OTHER NIGHT!! NO LONGER WILL I DREAM OF THE HOLGATE!!!

To be honest - i've never owned a foam hand in my life. I just find it sick to think that there's people out there who find it amusing to sing about bashing old ladies over the head etc ... i'm all for calling Shearer a wan*er and taunting Liverpool for being the Shyte of Merseyside but many of the old songs are just sick.

It strikes me as a load of old men pretending to be tough and macho ... singing about carrying flick-knives etc when in fact they are just sad washed up has-beens ... make way for the new generation guys .... the clubs moved on, your all thats left behind!

We weren't old men then, we were young fit lads (and some lasses) and it was a tough macho environment. You should have seen Linthorpe Road on some saturday afternoons (can you remember when Manure came and ransacked the Coop opposite the bowling alley?). I'm not one to want the aggro back in football but the passion and love for your team I'd have back like a shot.

another time we visited derby, they had just sighned Leighton James from Burnley for about £375,000..top money in those days and he was a good player, as he was introduced to the crowd they/he started kicking balls into the crowd....

the boro fans caught some and kicked them back..and up went the chant....

Before these sanatised days where both teams walk side by side on to the pitch, the opposition was always first out. As Bernard Gent spent a minute or two trying to cue up 'The Power Game' the Holgate would serenade the opposition with either...

to the tune of 'Those were the days my friend' - M.Hopkin

Get off the fcu-kin pitch,
Get off the fcu-kin pitch,
Get off the pitch,
Get off the fcukin pitch... etc

or to the tune of 'Ilkley Moor Bar tat' - Trad.

I was ten before anyone would take me to a Boro game, which mean't I only had 2 seasons at Ayresome, second season as season ticket in the North Stand very near the Holgate, I used to love the songs that came out of the Holgate.

I remember that Millwall game in the last season at Ayresome, I've got it on videa, every time Kasey Keller picks up the ball you can hear "USA W_ANK W_ANK W_ANK W_ANK".

Wopuld have loved to be in Holgate all the time, had a fair few seasons at Ayresome (RIP) and used to be so overstruck by the Holgate end used to sit and watch the Holgate rather than the football, let face it it wernt the best! Used to love the, eio'ing in the middle after the goal, looked quality! That was propper football and atmosphere's! At least i can say i was in there for lastgame ever!

Red_Slim Posted on 9/12 11:00
re: Old Holgate Songs?

It does bring back fond memories.

It wasn't just the the Holgate that made it though, the away fans back then had room to move about.

I recall a grim Saturday, it absolutely pishing down, the heavens had really opened. It was Coventry at home and there all the Coventry fans with absolutely no shelter (quality away corner we had), but did it dampen their spirits? Nope.

Coventry managed probably the longest 'Lets all do the Conga' snake I've seen.

Quality

Not sure that it is politically correct to call a lady a wan*er guys ... surely bitch is more appropriate!! :-)

All i was saying was that songs that involve hitting grannies over the head ... bricking kids ... carrying flick knives etc turn my stomach!! To me they are worse that the carp that the city fans were singing the other day!

No offence .. just everyone seems to think that they are "cool" but i disagree

boroboroboro Posted on 9/12 15:11
re: Old Holgate Songs?

Brought back some memories this lot, the only ones I think I can add are....

"You're a wnaker you're a wnaker you're a wnaker Jimmy Hill
just a f***ing big chinned b****rd
you're a wnaker Jimmy Hill" (only sung when the MOTD cameras we're there on the old South Stand roof)

And of course....

"If you're all going to Derby clap your hands
If you're all going to Derby clap your hands
If you're all going to Derby
all going to Derby
all going to Derby clap your hands"

Why DID we all go to Derby, used to always to 3-5,000????
As a 16-20 year old I never knew why, I just went! It was THE big day out!
Some great nights out in Nottingham after those games! Being thrown out of an early Human League gig at Nottingham Uni for highly dangerous use of a canteen trolly springs to mind!!!

Great days.

re: Old Holgate Songs?

The Holgate singing "John Lowe .. Bristow .. John Lowe .. Bristow" as that Arsenal fan was lead around the pitch with a dart stuck in the side of his nose.

crowd singing "Jamie's gonna get ya" whenever an opposition player made a late tackle. Pollock would than crunch him at the next opportunity. I forget now which team we were playing but the Holgate did the "Jamie's gonna get ya" routine and Pollock crunched this black player on the opposite side - only thing was there were two black lads playing and Pollock had got the wrong one. It didn't take him long to put that right!

What shall we do to the ????? keeper
What shall we do to the ????? keeper
What shall we do to the ????? keeper
kick his f''king head in

the next line was something like
