FMTTM STOP SMOKING CLUB

Encouraged by Buddy, Stevie T and others, I would like to propose a FMTTM Stop Smoking Club.

We could decide on a date (I propose 1 March) and just go for it. There may be casualties, we might not all make it, but there is strength in numbers and I reckon most of us will come through.

Maybe a weekly "name and shame" of those who cracked, although this obviously relies upon total honesty from those taking part.

Come on, give it a go - you know it makes sense, sign up below.

I'll kick off ...

How about a start smoking club for all the vehement non-smokers to allow them to learn humility and sympathy for those less betterer than them?

Good luck Otley. I'm with you in spirit.

Don't you mean "Show your menthol"?

I'm in Otley!!! I'm reading Allen Carr's book, "Stop smoking the easy way" at the minute and should expect to complete it by the end of the month (Dragging it out I know), so March 1 sounds good to me.

BoroTommo Posted on 8/2 10:10

Don't like that term Bandy. Having a fag has never sounded right to me.
Smoking, whilst reading, yes. The book tells you to keep smoking until the book is finished, "then you will escape forever"!!!

BoroTommo, where abouts are you? I'm about 200 yards down from the golf course.

I think that's about 4 of us down here that I know of.

save yourself, make a roll up out of the last page.

I half read it, then gave up cos I thought it might work. Is he American or English do you know?

I packed in on bonfire night. Hate filled 2 weeks for the world and all that walk it, now it's ok. If you work, take some holiday is my advice.

Best of luck tommo.

No, OBF, I said I'm in (for packing in the weed), not I'm in Otley (the town), LMFAO. I used to live in Harrogate, and now live within 200 yards of a golf course, but am probably 200 miles away from you!!!!

Shaun.....libraries are for smoking..a quiet joint

Cheers ttn, I know I'll need all the luck I can muster

Let me guess, Otley, you went out, got pished, woke up feeling very ill and wondering what happened the night before....then 9 months later this ugly bird with 2 heads, carrying a baby, knocked on the door and said..., "remember me?". You freaked out and headed west...to Otley (car must have run out of petrol, perhaps?)

Encouragement for everyone on this, giving up was the best thing I ever did. Ignore all the propaganda out there that says it's tough, it's NOT! 31st May 1993 was the last day I smoked a tab, and I know I'll never smoke one again. It was easy!

Aye, I'll give it a go aswell. Allen Carr's book has been sat on my desk for two months but haven't had the guts to pick it up.

The colleague who gave it me packed in 14 months ago and she smoked like a chimney so it it's got to be worth a go. And with the mutual FMTTM stop smoking club as support who can fail!!

I may live to regret this (pun intended)

Gave up 4th January 2004. Ran out of money and had no choice. I could have started again a short while later but decided not to. How glad am I?

I used to enjoy smoking but it's lovely to have the money to spend on other things, to be able to taste food properly, to not permamently stink of ciggies and to be a complete and utter hypocritical cock about all those horrible smokers now .

Good luck to all those that decide to give up.

Timboi Posted on 9/2 1:43
re: FMTTM STOP SMOKING CLUB

There's 3 things you need to give up:

- A genuine reason for giving up. Alot of people give up because it's 'the thing to do' (blah blah blah) and don't last 2 weeks. You've got to have a good reason for yourself to give up - not what you hear from other people.
- Know that for the first 2 weeks at least you'll have cravings and your mind will play strange tricks on you to try and smoke again. Make it through the first 2 weeks and it's alot easier after that. Drink can be your enemy here as it tends to throw your will-power out the window.
- If you hang out with smokers, don't spend much time with them for a while (especially when you drink).

I think the habit is much worse to break than the addiction to nicotine.

BoroTommo Posted on 9/2 8:48
re: FMTTM STOP SMOKING CLUB

I read a few more chapters last night, and this guy (Allen Carr) has got some really valid points.

* Nobody actually likes smoking when they start, but we all work extremely hard to get hooked!
* Nobody actually likes smoking (they just tell you that) we are just brainwashed (by nicotine) to think that we need a smoke.
* If you had a coldsore on your lip, and it began to itch, and someone gave you a cream to get rid, and it worked, you'd be chuffed, right? If that coldsore kept coming back, but the cream kept working, you'd keep using the cream, right? If the coldsore then kept coming back, more frequently and bigger, you'd make damn sure that you always had the cream with you, whatever the cost, right? If the coldsore kept coming back every hour and began to cover your whole face and was agony, you'd use more and more of the cream, right?
If you learned from your doctor that the cream was actually causing the sores and that by stopping its use the sores would go away, you'd stop right? So, stop smoking, its the cigarettes that make you want another cigarette.

Come on guys, we can beat this filthy, smelly, poisonous, expensive killer!

re: FMTTM STOP SMOKING CLUB

When I stopped it was horrible, I felt itchy for a while. But, it was only a while, a short while at that. The first few days were annoying as hell. The first two weeks were not great but, after about the end of teh second week, I wasn't really craving anymore. I remember thinking, when I went with BoroTommo to Cardiff, 'oh, I could probably have one...'. Well, I didn't and I'm so glad. Just pack them in if you want to or have to, no ifs buts or maybes. If you don't want to quit, then don't.

I ran out of money, could have scrounged aroud until I could afford it again but found that I didn't want to.

Mrs Rhythm stopped 2 years ago with Zyban - some kind of mind altering drug. Nvere felt comortable with that myself but worked for her. Willpower and lots of coffee is my plan...

petrio Posted on 10/2 23:13
re: FMTTM STOP SMOKING CLUB

Due to the lack of money available to me when I stopped, I couldn't go out drinking either. I think that helped. I kept out of smoky atmospheres until about a month had passed. By that time, I was fine. I could go out and not really be tempted. Another good thing that I did was to make a really big deal out of it to everyone. That way, you feel that you will be letting yourself down in front of everyone if you fail.

Otley_Boro_Fan Posted on 10/2 23:13

StevieT Posted on 14/2 20:50
re: FMTTM STOP SMOKING CLUB

After over four months now without a cigarette I can honestly say the best thing about not smoking is getting your freedom back! Yes sir! (big Vic Reeves salute) No longer do you have to report to Colonel Nicotine once an hour for duty; no longer do you have to squeeze a cigarette in ahead of a meeting (or whatever thing or place you know you won't be able to smoke in) and dash for the exits like a 100m sprinter as soon as it's over; no longer do you have to brave the elements leaning against a wall or be stuck in a doorway puffing away like a naughty school kid; no longer do you have to (almost Mr. Bean-like) scramble to the end seat in a pub or restaurant in a feeble attempt to make sure you can at least try to blow smoke away from other people; yes, no longer do the expensive contents of a small cardboard box dominate your life.

I've managed it without any NRT, just willpower ... and even though it's been a relatively short time, I can't think of myself now as a person who smoked. Ha! I smoked 20 Marlboro red a day for 15 years and enjoyed them. Well, except for about this time last year when I just got tired of it. I decided to pack in on my birthday - which isn't until September, so that gave me quite a bit of time to get used to the idea. I thought 'in seven months I'm going to quit.' And I did. I don't miss them at all. Not one single bit.

If you want to do it, you will. I know from previous smoking threads that, like me, the people who found it easier to stop said that they wanted to stop ... and that's the key ... not 'thinking you should' or 'hoping you can' but actually WANTING to stop.

All the best with it. Get your freedom back.

OBF
Weekly post / confessional sounds like a good idea.
Also perhaps we should all watch out for anyone posting looking for a little support or encouragement. (perhaps a daily hoof by your good self to keep it prominent on the board).
I think it's important that if anyone gets desperate and breaks, it should be seen not as failure but as a blip and they should be encouraged to continue trying.

Otley,

Sensible eating did buggger all to prevent it.

The good news is it is coming off with a bit of effort BUT it takes more than a little effort. I appreciate metabolisms are going to differ, but this defo feels harder than 'losing a few pounds'

The bad news (be warned) A good mate of mine is quite big lad (width over height here). He gave up aswell, put on more weight but started smoking again. The weight hasn't come back off.

Just thought I'd drop that one in.

Smoking: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking.
The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium
found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine
withdrawal.

Count me in. My girlfriend is currently trying to quit. (Day 4), although she is finding it tough. I've tried cutting down but guess I light up when bored. 1st March = all ashtrays, lighters and fags going in the bin.

BoroTommo Posted on 21/2 16:00
re: FMTTM STOP SMOKING CLUB

I'm still up for it. bananas, that's a new one! Still the Potassium increases sex drive, which means I'll need a smoke after sex, oh no, that means I'll need more salt on my food so I can taste it, oh shiite, I'll have to drink more, bollox, can't have a drink without a smoke. aaaaaaaaargh vicious circle.

Still twenty bananas and twenty bonks a day should help with the weight situation

Could I suggest a penalty for failure, 25?? (more?, less?) to a charity chosen by the majority????

I'll quite happily give to cancer research as I think it's close to our issue, what do you think.

I'm actually looking forward to it however I'm enjoying (if that's possible) my last few days of the dreaded weed.

Should I post an email address (a spare one cos I'm bound to get some loonies) do you think?

That way people could email me, say every Monday, with their tabs or lack of them for the week, then I could email a chart out to everyone on the Monday night/Tuesday morning.

I know it seems a bit regimented, but I reckon people will feel involved that way and not isolated - bit of support, strength in numbers etc.

No but the idiots who can't take their drink spoil the quality of life of many people around them to varying degrees, some of those degrees being in the extreme.
I enjoy a drink frequently and occasionally get shitfaced but don't use it as an excuse to pollute town and city centres with behaviour from ranging banal stupidity to severe violence and even drink fuelled manslaughter on occasions.

We all have our vices and bad traits and your general behaviour on this board indicates at least two of yours, snide and occasionally outright nasty are two which spring to mind

re: FMTTM STOP SMOKING CLUB

And don't think you've got it licked even when the craving goes away. I stopped for 10 years, then picked up a tab and started all over again. I never lost that "old pal" feeling that the cigs gave to me, I never lost the gazing across the boozer staring at someone enjoying that Regal. Nowadays, I'm a very low level smoker, but a smoker nonetheless. I smoked about 15 on Friday evening, with a bunch of friends having a few beers and a wee nip or two. I Haven't touched one since, and I won't unless I have a beer one night this week.
When the time is right to stop, when you really want to quit, then it's a piece o'piss !! At the moment, I'm enjoying it and I don't think I'm gonna give it up until I get that knock on me psychological that tells me I wanna jack it in now please ..

BEST OF LUCK TO ALL OF YOU WHO ARE STOPPING !!!

re: FMTTM STOP SMOKING CLUB

Good morning everyone, and what a wonderful day it is too. It's the first day of the rest of our lives, and we can look forward to many healthy years without abiding to the slavery of the evil weed.

Always remember we don't actually LIKE smoking, we just kid ourselves that we do! They are filthy disgusting smelly things that actually poison us every time we light one up.

The only reason we think it is hard to give up is the nicotine cravings, but these can only be satisfied by more nicotine, which increases the dependence and so on. Each time we think we "need" a smoke, as soon as you light up the craving is gone, but then we don't actually ENJOY the cigarette at all, it's a myth.

Just tell yourself, every time you feel you need a smoke, "Not this time sonny, you're not tricking me again!" and the craving will pass.

An intelligent man can get done by a confidence trickster once, but only a fool would fall for the same trick again or again.

Are all smokers fools? YES THEY ARE! Ask any smoker if he or she would have started smoking in the first place if they had the choice again. A resounding NO!

Good luck everyone. Stick with it. Many years of health, wealth and happiness await us all.

re: FMTTM STOP SMOKING CLUB

Morning guys and girls.

Another beautiful day spent firmly clutching the wagon.

No smoking so far for Tommo, but the weird feelings I had last night were driving me mad.

Keep reading the book Pauluka, that's how I've done it, and it works if you take it seriously. Put it this way, you will bne in a better psychological frame of mind to stop when you finish the book.

Warning, however, keep smoking, whilst you read the book, and pack in the gum, patches or whatever. They will actually make it HARDER for you to stop!!!

A good analagy that I take from the book is as follows:

Imagine you have a little nicotine monster inside your belly, and every time you get a withdrawl pang your monster says "feed me nicotine". If you starve this little bugger he'll be dead in 3 weeks! He'll try and trick you to take just one puff or one cig, and he'll try and kid your brain that you should do it, but if you kill him now, you can be a non-smoker for life, never to desire a cigarette again.

I recommend the book to anyone. You'll need some mental strength as well, but if you really want to stop, you'll stop....permanently

janplanner Posted on 2/3 9:17
re: FMTTM STOP SMOKING CLUB

none for me, so far. i was going mad last night. i had to wait until 11 last night for my tea, as my friend who was coming up to stay got stuck on the m6 for 7 hours! what do i normally do when i'm hungry, but don't want to eat? smoke a cigarette!!!

i didn't though. i went to the gym instead.

Isn't it amazing how big a part habit plays in this smoking malarky? The association between cup of tea and having a smoke around 9am is very strong for me.

Very hot sweaty night with strange dreams for me, and Mrs Otley reckons I was fonlding her arse my sleep!

I'd quite like to stop (I think) but can't imagine getting through a day at work or going for a pint without them. When i'm bored or stressed i have a fag and feel much happier.

Mickey_2003, welcome aboard.

I've got the best part of 3,000 fags which I brought back from holiday in January. Strangely enough, it seems a comfort knowing that they are there.

Grumpy_Paul - yes I drink alcohol, and yes it can be a drug just like eating cake.

However that does not affect other people around me and I do not drink lots of it every day, as I am not a drug abuser, a drug addict unlike you lot!!

Scum of the earth!!

re: FMTTM STOP SMOKING CLUB

Is that why you try to kill me and other non-drug abusers?

towz Posted on 2/3 11:20
re: FMTTM STOP SMOKING CLUB

Define drug-abuse please.

RAZMOND_HWDR Posted on 2/3 11:27

compulsive, excessive use of a substance despite
negative consequences which can be severe.

Don't do it Al!! Imagine the shame, the self-respect flying out the window, the years of self-torture to follow etc... Be strong!

Mind you, being a skunk you're used to most of the above by now

Thanks for that tommo. I didnt fall into the trap as yet, dont know how much longer I can hold out. I ended up stuffing my face with fruit and chocolate and the craving has passed for now. Maybe thats just because I can barely get up from the chair.

I've just had a cigarette!

re: FMTTM STOP SMOKING CLUB

Bad news Pauluka, but keep reading the book (and smoking whilst you read it) you'll see it makes sense in the end.

Pack the patches in though. They keep putting nicotine in your body, which makes it harder to quit.

How's everyone else doing? Must admit I've had a couple of tortuous days, but I feel great today. Played squash last night and actually felt my lungs were already in better shape!

How was the pub Jan?

Keep it going one and all.

I am disgusted with myself

The thing is, it wasn't even as good as I thought it would be.

Sorry to hear that Otley. Keep at it mate, you'll get there if you really want to.

re: FMTTM STOP SMOKING CLUB

Hope you all had a good day! Don't give up trying people. That was an easyish day at work for me, but I was busy most of the time. Got to the pub for 1/2 hour at lunch and managed to survive even though one of my mates was smoking.

Lets keep it up.

re: FMTTM STOP SMOKING CLUB

Well day three and still not had one. Was really tempted today as I had to drive over to Merseyside and always liked to have a smoke when driving. But managed to resist! And for those who have given into temptation just remember the important thing is not to give up on giving up....so start stopping again!

Nedkat Posted on 3/3 20:39
re: FMTTM STOP SMOKING CLUB

It's those times when your used to having a tab which will seem the hardest times of all to resist. During those times, realise the position your in, and go do something else .. fast ! A lot of smoking is the habit forming involuntary'isms that you do. When you feel the need to draw on a cigarette, use a pencil, it does help.

How do everyone?

I've not smoked for a year and a month (as of tomorrow) and, let me re-assure you, it does get MUCH easier. If you want to stop you will.

Well done Tommo on your three days! Those three were the worst for me.

re: FMTTM STOP SMOKING CLUB
