re: Best/Worst Support Bandyou've Seen

Best : Van Halen supporting Bon Jovi

Worst : Ugly Kid Joe at the same gig, spent most of it shouting foul mouthed rubbish rather than playing music!!

WilmslowRed Posted on 29/3 15:54
re: Best/Worst Support Bandyou've Seen

Best : Oasis supporting Boo Radleys in Preston, June 1994 - genuinely exciting, just before Definitely Maybe was released.

Worst - some fcuker in a loincloth and flourescent body paint playing a didgeridoo before the Levellers took the stage, Newcastle Riverside, 1991. The gig actually got worse after that point.

Best - The Kills supporting Primal Scream

re: Best/Worst Support Bandyou've Seen

Best - Cast supporting U2 at Roundhay in 1998. It pissed down but they really got the crowd going.

Worst - The Stranglers supporting Simple Minds at Gateshead in 1991 or Marksman (a really crap white rap band) supporting U2 at Roundhay in 1993.

LiverBoro Posted on 29/3 15:59
re: Best/Worst Support Bandyou've Seen

WORST - Dreadzone (im sure thats there nam, big fella with dreadlocks and a base guitar) Unfortunately these have supported twice at gigs ive attended

BEST - Black Grape... ive prob seen better support acts such as cast and a few other which later made it big... but Black grape made me LMAO... no particular reason... but they did!!!

foomanboro Posted on 29/3 16:00
re: Best/Worst Support Bandyou've Seen

Best - Radiohead or Foo Fighters.....Both have incredible presence on stage and sound even better live than on their albums.

Worst - Happy Mondays and Oasis at the same gig. Liam and Noel spent more time bickering on stage than performing. Shaun Ryder was the atypical embarrasing sweary fat man on stage.

Keitel Posted on 29/3 16:04
re: Best/Worst Support Bandyou've Seen

Best: Galaxie 500 supporting The Sundays, The Riverside-Newcastle.

Worst: Happy Mondays* supporting The Weather Prophets, The Town Hall Crypt.

*Never heard them before at the time, sounded terrible. Come to appreciate them since!

re: Best/Worst Support Bandyou've Seen

[ CHORUS ]
We're the opening act
We do a couple songs and we don't come back
And when we're finished we'll be hoping you clap
We're the opening act

1-2, what's up y'all?

[ VERSE 1: Andy C and Dizzy Dustin ]
We're the opening act and we're here tonight
At a club near you with the band you like
In fact, it's your favorite band, you're a superfan
Who wouldn't miss it for the world, so you thought up a plan
You bought your tickets in advance, you left your house on time
You drove 45 minutes, then you waited in line
And when you finally got in and made your way to the stage
You were very disappointed when we started to play
We're the opening act, please try to be patient
We been writing songs and rehearsin in our basement
This isn't just a gig, it's a place to be seen
And a chance to be heard, see, we're chasin a dream
And we truly hope that you'll enjoy the way we entertain
So when you go home you'll remember our name
We know you waited two years for your favorite band to tour
But you're stuck watchin us who you never heard before

[ CHORUS ]

We're the opening act
Some people even poke fun and they laugh
But most just drink and smoke in the back
Know why? We're the opening act

[ VERSE 2: Andy C and Dizzy Dustin ]
We're the opening act, we get drinks and snacks
And a backstage pass and some money for gas
The stage manager asks, "Are you ready to go?"
There's only 50 people here and it's a sold out show
Can't we wait until the club is full? "No, you gotta hurry"
"The schedule says you need to be done by 8:30"
8:30, why so early, there's a line around the block?
"No one cares about the band in the opening spot"
We're the opening act, we don't have any hits
The club owner and the show promoter don't know we exist
So we're never on the flyers or the marquees
It's so quiet when we play, I hear people drop their car keys
A couple people rock, a couple people boo
But most just wish that we were through
So the biggest cheer we get is when I say, "Here's the last song"
Cause they know the headliner is about to come on
We're the opening act, we hope you have a nice evening
We'll keep working harder and we'll never stop believing
Maybe some day we'll ride the tour bus
And you'll be coming out to see us
But for now we're the opening act

(On with the show)
(We're gonna be in yo town soon)
We're the opening act

2)Red Guitars supporting Smiths at Dundee Uni(~1984)
Worst-the crap US deathmetal band who supported SLF at Town Hall last October (I've seen a lot of poor support bands-but they arethe ones I remember as being worst)

Chutney Posted on 29/3 17:27
re: Best/Worst Support Bandyou've Seen

Best: Nirvana (actually, they weren't the best, but it's a good boast)

Worst: Tricky one - do you go for tedious (in which case it's Diesel Park West), or godawful, in which case step forward Daisy Chainsaw.

The_Boro_Biffa Posted on 29/3 17:29
re: Best/Worst Support Bandyou've Seen

Best - Feeder supporting the Stereophonics in Cardiff
or
Anechoic supporting Embrace at Newcastle Town Hall

Worst - Ocean Colour Scene supporting the Stereophonics in Cardiff

It's noticeable that a lot of the 'worst' choices were due to some loud mouth stood on stage swearing for half an hour. thats exactly what OCS did as well as some truly embarassing/cringworthy Bo' Selecta impressions.

Best: The Clash (TRB were the last band on at Victoria Park, so I suppose THe Clash did support them)

Worst: Too many to mention, The Models (supporting Johnny Thunders and The Heartbreakers) were pretty poor, also Cyanide (supporting The Jam, were awful as well.

Link: The Clash @ Victoria Park 1978

re: Best/Worst Support Bandyou've Seen

The best:

Ben Folds supporting The Divine Comedy, Manchester. Virtually the entire crowd were there to see Ben Folds anyway, totally blew the Divine Comedy away (see also the Pixies supporting The Stereophonics at the Move festival).

The Verve supporting Oasis, London. The Verve had just released A Northern Soul and were genuinely thrilling. Oasis had just released Be Here Now and weren't. Mind you, Oasis supporting Whiteout in a tiny pub in Bedford back in 1994 wasn't too shabby.

The Flaming Lips playing before Radiohead at Glastonbury. Not strictly a support slot, but they were the best thing I had ever seen. Highlight was a thousand gnarled old hippies getting over excited when they played 'Breathe' by Pink Floyd.

Badlydrawnboy supporting R.E.M was a real disappointment.

jmboro Posted on 29/3 20:51
re: Best/Worst Support Bandyou've Seen

would agree with badly drawn boy
really like his music but saw him support REM in manchester a couple of years ago and was really disapointed

MontagueWithnail Posted on 29/3 20:56
re: Best/Worst Support Bandyou've Seen

worst: Budgie, drummer passed out on stage (n'castle city hall)

Best: Ted Nugent, smacked a bloke in the face with his mic stand for spitting at him. (Mayfair; Newcastle)

re: Best/Worst Support Bandyou've Seen

Best has to be Apocalyptica supporting Rammstein in Nottingham this year - 4 cellos and a drummer playing Metallica and Hall of the Mountain King and other classical stuff. Unbelievablely fun. All trained at the Sibelius Academy in Finland

littlejimmy Posted on 30/3 9:09
re: Best/Worst Support Bandyou've Seen

jmboro, I'm going to see U2 in Paris where the support act is Snow Patrol. That's alright, but I would have loved it to have been the Killers. The perfect bill. Never mind.

benpoolie Posted on 30/3 10:24
re: Best/Worst Support Bandyou've Seen

in reverse order!!
verve supporting Ride and again supporting Smashing Pumpkins

Lou Reed supporting U2 in belfast, but really i was too young to appreciate it..

actually thinking about it the very best and worst happened at the same gig! a german band called Blumfeldt supporting pavement were definately the best support band i've ever seen - mercury rev were on that bill too, and unduobtedly were awful - everything was so loud and dare i say tuneless!(we also broke into the venue earlier in the day, and witnessed their soundcheck - aback i was taken at their arrogance and general meanness, disliked em i did..) since then tho they got somewhat better and i've seen the rev a further 4 times and love em....weird that innit?

petrio Posted on 30/3 10:39
re: Best/Worst Support Bandyou've Seen

Best - Doves supporting Travis
Worst - Some dodgy sack of cock that supported Stereophonics in Birmingham 1999.

FriskyDoughnut, if Oasis had just released Be Here Now then The Verve would have just released Urban Hymns, not A Northern Soul.

Fatsuma Posted on 30/3 12:02
re: Best/Worst Support Bandyou've Seen

Brushy - James supported the Smiths in 85. You weren't at Victoria Halls in Hanley, Stoke by any chance?

Most unusual support act - Ben Elton and a cellist in Elizabethan dress. Gig was Echo and the Bunnymen at RSC Stratford-on-Avon.

I met Mark Gardner (from Ride) in America two years ago. The nicest bloke you could want to meet. Last seen (by me) heading off to shag an absolutely gorgeous American 20yr-old rollerblader. Lucky bugger.

re: Best/Worst Support Bandyou've Seen

Worst - Funeral for a Friend supporting Iron Maiden at Earls Court. Truly terrible. Crowd chanting for them to get off and throwing stuff at them. Could neither sing or play.

Best - Possibly Thunder supporting Alice Cooper at the Brighton Centre.

sim67 Posted on 30/3 15:34
re: Best/Worst Support Bandyou've Seen

Best: either Coldplay playing before Terris at The Cornerhouse (although they were co-headlining)or The Pogues supporting U2 at Wembley.

Worst: Probably someone like Crispy Ambulance supporting New Order at the Rock Garden or Nash The Slash supporting Killing Joke at Gaskins. Their names were probably the best thing about them I seem to recall.
