It's linked to the word 'Gateway' which is a major Government propaganda feel-good factor buzzword which has been successful for them for some time now.

What an absolute waste of space and money. Hasve you seen all the empty office blocks that there already are over in Stockton near the barrage. Have these people nothing better to do with time money and resources?

Manhatten = pretentious in the extreme.

Thanks for the linky thing btw badgey

LOL, surely though, we don't need anymore damned office blocks especially when those monstrosities have been built in St Hildas.

We need a proper theatre/ music venue.

re: manhattan gate

'New business capital of Tees Valley' - Not enough acreage in the imediate area - inadequate infrastructure i.e. A66 aint wide enough - A19 aint wide enough - A689 probably just ok at the moment. A1(M) not wide enough (although they are trying to sort that one out slowly)

re: manhattan gate

...Manhattan Gate is an absolute desperate attempt by the developers to show that Middlehaven is happening...i lived in the town centre between 99 and 2003 and every six months we got another glossy leaflet thing saying "This time it is really happening"...the fact is the Tees Valley Partnership are running out of time...6 years on and they have nowt to show for it. where are the big developers? Where are the guys form Dubai with their millions? The Gazette runs its new "101 Reasons why its great to live in Tees Valley" sham as Middlesbrough comes fourth in the league of Uk Clone towns that have lost their identity...I have this to say about investors, if they walked around the town centres of Stockton and Middlesbrough, would they say a regular amount of wealthy people compared to most places?? No. Would they see a regular amount of chavs like most places. No. The big Tees Valley plans are flawed. Middlehaven has a stinkin chemical plant there!

Why the New York theme? Is this a post 9/11 suck up sort of thing or are they expecting loads of American buisness to relocate to the Boro?

what happened to the toaster style casino and kerplunk music theatre???

bloody office blocks.

The_Commisar Posted on 8/6 6:26
re: manhattan gate

so Mr Pancrack, your proposal is what ?
until you have a better idea, then shut up...
As the south over heats, and companies look to re-locate to save money and improve the quality of life of the staff (and directors etc etc) they will want to move.
Companies will not want to sit and wait around for 2 years for an office block to be ready.

SaltburnRed Posted on 8/6 6:52
re: manhattan transfer..

Sorry but I'm with Mr Pancrack on this one, that whole development is fatally flawed in that a bloody chemical plant is slap bang in the middle of it. Now if you were a decent sized company looking to invest in new offices and new jobs in the area, would you really pick that spot. My wife's company have been having literature thrown at them for months about taking up office space in Manhatten Gate so they obviously never had anyone lined up wanting to move in when they started to build it. As it is my wife's firm moved into new offices near Preston Farm as they liked the location better.

I'm not saying I'm against the regeneration of the area but I just don't see the large scale investment emerging whilst that chemical works is there. Maybe I'll be wrong, I hope I am. As for the name - pathetic. With our rich economic and industrial history they pick a fancy name irrelevant to the area. Someone clearly hasn't a clue.

re: manhattan transfer..

got to agree with mr pancrack,it smacks of desperation, the chance to expand and develope a leisure area from the ugc to the riverside seems less and less likely to happen with each passing month.
build a leisure pool, speedway and dog track, ice rink, something other than boring faceless empty office blocks.

20_Briggsy Posted on 8/6 7:18
re: manhattan transfer..

A lot of nagativity and sceptics about. The middleheaven re-gernations project is great for teesside and the football club.

GtownBeerBelly Posted on 8/6 7:38
re: manhattan transfer..

Hudsonside, surely. Have a bagel, Briggsy.

SaltburnRed Posted on 8/6 8:01
re: manhattan transfer..

As I said, make plans to remove that chemical plant and yes, it would be a potentially great development. Until then, I'm not hopeful. Sorry if that seems negative but it's the way I see it.

sasboro Posted on 8/6 8:58
re: manhattan transfer..

All these names are invented by businessmen in suits to supposedly help attract business and shake off the old image of middlesbrough/teesside. if they had their way they would rename middlesbrough

briggsy, how is middlehaven great for MFC? do you think it will help attract more players?

rob_fmttm Posted on 8/6 9:01
re: manhattan transfer..

Jax - we don't need a new music and theatre - there are already 2 theatres in town - Middlesbrough (Little) and a new one called The Hexagon in Acklam that is about to get a big publicity push. Excellent music venues at Empire, Town Hall, Arena etc. University could be pushed into doing more. At the moment I usually have a choice of options every night for things to review for Gazette (in Teesside area). And one week in two there will be a band that is being touted as hot property in national music press. It really is exceptionally healthy at the moment. People like Sophie and me are trying to spread that word.

sasboro Posted on 8/6 9:07
re: manhattan transfer..

I would build an arena, like at newcastle. which can be used for concerts and or ice rink(ice hockey..etc), conference facilities, something that will generate interest from outside the area and bring in revenue from people outside the town. Perhaps also have a olympic size swimming pool underneath it.
I hope it doesnt just end up as fancy looking office blocks for the council, uni, a super college, a super market and some big electrical shops.

and push the EU/government to get that chemical plant relocated.

re: manhattan gate

its not as if developers are willing to build speculatively, the current builds are pre let, big shed builders are moving to yorkshire so that one is out, middlesbrough college is looking to move there so llets hope that kick starts the area.

craig_pancrack Posted on 8/6 11:46
re: manhattan transfer..

I totally want to see regeneration across Teesside in every aspect. What I abhor is people being paid big bucks to peddle spin and bull. I dont think criticising something which isnt good is negativity on my part. I dont believe the hype and hype is what it is.
The Tees Valley is flat for starters. How is belittling 'Teesside' going to galvanise local people and regenerate communities? Calling a four storey block 'Manhatan Gate' and 'Hudson Quay' doesnt either, it makes us a laughing stock! The Tees Valley suits claim this is going to be the envy of Britain, a world class economy, resort etc. Every local regen quango across Britain is saying the same thing. The diversity in the local economy which is crucial will be stunted so long as there is a chemical industry here, lifeblood as it may be. We see it everyday, outsiders flee in terror. They also see the truth behind the Tees Valley mask, they know we have massive social problems and deprivation, and that other areas have more disposable income. Sad but true. So I am totally positive about reality and dealing with it. My biggest hope is that the Tees Val. vision comes true and i am proved wrong.

The Commisar - i cant shut up we fought a war from freedom of speech mate!

re: manhattan transfer..

What annoys me is the total lack of imagination, we were promised all them kerplunk hotels and toaster shaped casinos (or summat) and what do we get. A bloody big greenhouse. It's not good enough. Why not build a halls of residence for Teesside uni, put in a few nice bars and cafes, build a bloody big wall to keep out the St Hildites and you've have somewhere with a vibrant, laidback nightlife scene, to rival the 15 pints and a fight mentality of the rest of the town. A few swanky riverfront restaurants would be nice too. Nobody will rent out office space when the access is so bad. Idiots.

re: manhattan transfer..

Hudson Quay, Greenwhich Place, Staten House??? For fcuks sake. Where do these pricks come from???

lazenby_smoggie Posted on 8/6 12:32
re: manhattan transfer..

i agree with towz in the development side. cardiff done something similar and made some sort of tourist attraction which had some nice wine bars and coffee houses there. The docks at liverpool is a great example. museums with local history, other tourist attractions and then a few bars asweel. its about time the local councils and governments realise why we are here and show some recognition for what the people of middlesbrough achieved in the world of industry. mining, docks and steelworks. If it wasn't for them we wouldn't of got europes biggest chemical plant investing in the area either even if it is an eye sore in my back garden.

sasboro Posted on 8/6 12:35
re: manhattan transfer..

like i said the whole place will end up as call centres, council offices, uni buildings and a super college.
i am hoping for bars, cafes and restaurants to be developed along the dock next to the teesside and then have apartments over looking the doc or the river, and encourage small independent shops to relocate and have it with cobbled streets and perhaps a centre/square which will be the focus for the area.
