OFFICIAL Ashes 3rd Test Thread

Rather than have stacks of different threads as before why don't we stick to just one.

McGrath and Lee both start for Australia

England unchanged.

I wonder if McGrath starting could be a blessing in disguise. With the injury he's had, he may be favouring that ankle after a couple of spells and so his bowling could be thrown off.

How the hell is McGrath fit? It was supposed to be grade 2 ankle ligament damage, which takes 6 weeks to heal.

re: OFFICIAL Ashes 3rd Test Thread

I think the Aussies have taken a BIG gamble to play both Lee and McGrath. Lee only bowled 5 overs in his opening birst which seems unusual. If as Sir G says McGrath is playing with pain killing injections they are risking a lot on a batsman's wicket.

I expect they would REALLY have liked to win the toss.

Come on England

glad we won the toss and decided to bat.. put McGraths ankle to the test..

The umpires will have to watch if they try and sub him between bowling stints.. not allowed for known injuries.. and also needs to be on the pitch a time before being to bowl again..

sparkins Posted on 11/8 12:56
re: OFFICIAL Ashes 3rd Test Thread

I think it really shows how concerned the Aussies are by England. After the first test several of them were crowing about winning
5-0, but we showed in the last game that without McGrath to stem the flow of runs, there isn't much to choose between the two sides. No matter what they say about him being fit, his inclusion is a huge gamble.

I hope England can sensibly target the other bowlers and force the Aussies to use McGrath more than they want to; the more work he gets through, the more chance of him breaking down. The Aussies made a point of saying they were trying to knock Giles out of the attack so that England had to use Flintoff and Harmison more than we want, so that they become less effective and we should look to do the same with McGrath.

As for Mcgrath's batting, he used to be a complete bunny, but has definitely improved in the past couple of years and got a very respectable 20 not out in the first test.

Wakey_Boro_Fan Posted on 11/8 13:52

Michael Vaughan then passed fifty after being dropped and bowled on a no-ball off successive McGrath deliveries.

Two sessions to England. We need to concentrate after tea and NOT lose a quick cheap wicket. If we do that I'd like to see young Bell get a decent knock, Captain for a ton+ and bat the Aussies out of the game on day two.

Looking at McGrath's figures he isn't fully fit. 13 overs none for 61 - very ordinary!

Positive, aggressive cricket is good, but we just need to add a bit of nous.

England seem to have lost wickets within 10 minuts of the end of almost every session.

Flintoff could have got to 50 in singles before lunch and gone LARGE this afternoon.

Still - it's a bit like getting into the UEFA cup for the first time ever and then complaining cos its not the Champions League!

It is not just a matter not getting the runs that we thought we were going to get but we have given the Aussies a lift by losing wickets at bad times 2 wkts in the last 10 minutes last night and 2 in the last 10 minutes this morning..434-8 is poor considering we were 292-2 lets hope Giles, Harmy and Jones can clubb 50 or 60 runs or more this afternoon.

Looking very much like a draw now unless Australia have a major collapse.

Get another wicket soon we're on for the win.

I don't know about that. Two wickets in the first session is okay, and if we pick up a third before lunch then it will definitely be advantage England.

re: OFFICIAL Ashes 3rd Test Thread

If I was Oz (with 17 overs remaining, 3 wickets, and 110 runs behind) I would just go for it.

If they lose, they could console themselves that they have a chance to level the series.

But if they win, it would be a huge body blow for England and probably guarantee them a series victory.

Even if they just start doing well, they would make England back off and play more defensively.

re: OFFICIAL Ashes 3rd Test Thread

for me, if we scored more runs with 6 wickets, and they could not reach that and used 9, we shoudl win. that isn't the way it works though - we have to bowl them ALL out or its a draw.

Oh well, Ponting didn't deserve to be on a losing side there. Another brilliant game of cricket, still all to play for. Out of interest what happens if it finishes 2-2 is there a decider or are the ashes shared?

If the series ends all square, that's it. No extra game. The team holding the Ashes retains them.

Pity the rain on the 3rd day saved the Aussies in the end, but I expect England to go on and win the series we have nothing to worry about we have the beating of them...and they know it.

re: OFFICIAL Ashes 3rd Test Thread

about 6 ozzys playing well below usual standard......that could change....basically Warney has kept the whole show on the road!..think he will be next prime minister down here!

Blogsworth Posted on 15/8 21:44
re: OFFICIAL Ashes 3rd Test Thread

Yes it could change but I don't think it will I was watching the Aussies yesterday in the field during Englands second innings and the body language suggested that they didn't fancy it not then or for the remainder of the series. Englands bowlers have got the Aussies worked out and there is nothing they can do about it..weather permitting England will win the series...great innings by Ponting by the way.

Skipper under fire over tactics

August 16, 2005

AUSTRALIAN captain Ricky Ponting has been guaranteed the support of the national selectors and teammates despite questions about his on-field tactics through the first half of the Ashes series.

As Australia fought to save the third Test overnight, Ponting was under fire on several fronts including former Test skipper Ian Chappell for his decision to send England in to bat in the losing second Test at Edgbaston.

Some of his decisions at Old Trafford have also been queried.

He waited until the 34th over to introduce Shane Warne into the attack in the first innings and was criticised for taking off a scorching Brett Lee when Michael Vaughan first came to the crease.

Ponting instead gave the ball to the struggling Jason Gillespie, who was thrashed to all parts of the ground by the England captain as he strode to a bruising 166.

Some experts have also questioned his lack of imagination in the field, particularly a reluctance, at times, to have a third man despite runs leaking through that area.

But selection chairman Trevor Hohns and Glenn McGrath yesterday backed the skipper.

"It's easy to point the stick at the captain when the side isn't performing that well," Hohns said.

"Quite frankly, as far as we're concerned, as the Australian selection panel, he certainly has our vote of confidence at this stage."

Ponting admitted after the Edgbaston loss that he misread the wicket and was wrong in sending England in.

McGrath said the Tasmanian had the strong support of his teammates.

"It's funny, if the team has a couple of bad games it's always the captain that seems to get targeted," he said.

"The Birmingham wicket, there was a lot of talk beforehand that it was definitely a wicket to bowl on.

"As it turned out, it was probably a wicket to bat on.

"That's the way it goes.

"When things aren't quite coming off, we are not holding our catches, things are going against us, then it can look worse than it is.

"All the guys have total faith in Ricky and the way he captains out on the field.

"He gets a lot of advice from the senior players, he'll be fine."

McGrath, who took five wickets in England's second innings at Old Trafford, also rubbished British media reports of a rift between Ponting and Warne, saying they were "a blatant lie".

The veteran quick also backed the slumping Gillespie to return to form ahead of the fourth Test, which begins next week at Trent Bridge.

But the South Australian is expected to lose his spot, with Michael Kasprowicz an old-ball specialist poised to return.

Gillespie has only three wickets at a terrible average of 100 from 67 overs in the series, and appeared to lose the confidence of Ponting when he bowled for only four overs in England's second innings at Old Trafford.

Why not ask Warne to his face if he and Ponters had a bust up...I noticed that Warne has not been made available for interviews since the reports of a bust up came to light.
