Famous people from Billingham

Famous people born or having lived in the town include FMTTM message baord magician Lisbon Legend, actor Jamie Bell, TV Gladiator Jet, techno musician CJ Bolland, one of the lead singers of Chumbawamba and Paul Smith, the frontman for popular indie group Maxmo Park.

Lisbonlegend Posted on 8/9 5:38
re: Famous people from Billingham

From the same source.

Paul 'Scooby' Smith is the Geordie(!) Singer for British indie group Maxmo Park. He's been described as "The New Morrissey" and has also been compared to Jarvis Cocker. Full of energy, he is well known for his strange yet endearing dancing and has also been known to tell a lot of jokes.

i've heard someone called Jeremy Tomkins is making a name for himself.

Interesting Billingham fact - the classic novel form the 1920's 'A Brave New World' by Aldous Huxley was based on Billingham! Beat that fact!

The Davies Brothers are sort of famous I suppose, Tommy Mooney aswell.

Good fact Gittens. Have you read it?

So that's two famous Paul Smiths from Billingham then....the other is a drummer.....played with the Toy Dolls, so next time you hear Nellie the Elephant.....last seen on TOTP this year with Tony Chritie I think.

What about our very own Pumping Gnome....excellent book published earlier this year.

Claire Hamill, folksy type singer from long ago, still around. Boro supporter. Auntie lives next door to my mam.

Eddie Jobson. Violin/keyboards with Fat Grapple, Curved Air, Roxy Music and Frank Zappa. Now lives in America. Went to Campus School, family lived Richmond Crescent. His dad was Forum Theatre Manager for years.

Franc Roddam. Director Auf Wiedersehen Pet, Quadrophenia, Masterchef (!).

Bob Mortimer. Not many people know that. His granddad was an ICI director and when Bob was very little he and his family lived in the ICI Director's houses on Billingham Bank. His dad died and they moved to Eston. I'm out on a wee party thingy tonight with his big brother (Richard, who's MD of Hillprint, the people who do the Boro programmes).

There's probably a few more but I can't remember them at the mo.

PumpingGnome Posted on 8/9 9:58
re: Famous people from Billingham

OK about Roddam - always associate him with Billingham because he went to St John's school.

Claire Hamill (actually called Josephine) - her family were originally from Port Clarence but a)PC was part of Billingham UDC and b)they moved to Billingham

Willie Maddren was originally from Haverton but there again so was I (family moved out about 1954). My parents knew the Maddrens quite well - when Willie first made it into the Boro team my ma always referred to him as "Maddren's lad".

I tried reading it LL, but it was a struggle so gave up after a few pages. The bloke who wrote the forwward part of the book explained that Huxley had visited ICI a few times and that the book was loosley based on billingham in the wasy that th elocal community were born to work at ICI and thats how the community thrived. similar to his book that people are born/bred with a specific role to play depending on where you come from. i thinks thats what it was about anyway.

PumpinGnome, I'm goin to the tapas on station road on friday, i hope its good.

re: Famous people from Billingham

Tapas bar is fun and cheap. Spanish cuisine isn't exactly your Savoy Grill at the best of times but it's pretty authentic - they import a lot of the speciality stuff. I personally like the black pudding - similar to ours but more spicy.

When we go it's usually a salad, bread and about 3 tapas each. We can just about manage that. It's also cheap which is a big plus.

It's an enjoyable meal out.

One thing though - they say that they don't do bookings on a Friday or Saturday. I've known them to accept them but if you haven't booked then be prepared to stand at the bar while you wait for a table.

Guess it opened up again after I left, because it was closed for a fair few years as I recall.

This is the one right opposite the entrance to the Park right, on the same side as the Park. There was the Forum at the end, Park, then the road that went to Reviaulx (?), then the 'dcotors' and attached house on the corner, then 2 houses (one of them ours), then that old fogies home.

Lisbonlegend Posted on 9/9 0:35
re: Famous people from Billingham

There's a few Mackems but it's a Boro stronghold.

I watched one Boro lad start on 10 mackems in the Stoney Oak last season. They got off their bus after the game and came in for drinks in their shirts. Then they started singing provocative kiddy fiddler Boro songs so a lad piled in on his own and started lamping them all. Twas quite amusing. There was so many of them that they couldn't get to him properly and then the bouncers pulled him out, he was right as rain. They didn't sing after that.

Gittens went to Pentland.

Was Basil Brush from Billingham?

Jamie Pollock went to St Michaels school in Billingham, you can see him on the year pictures in the fifth year house block, dunno if he actually lived in billog though.

Otley_Boro Posted on 9/9 8:31
re: Famous people from Billingham

I've heard mackams say that Billog. and Stockton are mackum strongholds which is absolutley obserd.

The Stoney is the mackum stronghold in Billog. So if you fancy a rollabout get youself in their. Or if you fancy smashing a few windows try the "mackum" house on Wolviston back lane (only if your a good shot mind you, cos you might hit me mam and dads...)

The stoney used to do a bus to their home games, not sure if they still do? But as far as I'm aware it's the only boozer in billog to do so.

Boozers that do coaches to the Riverside, I know of are:
The Swan
The Farm
Low Grange Club
Catholic Club
Cons. Club
ICI Club
The Merlin

Say's it all really.

Rondo - we've sacked you dads bus off from the Swan (sorry) as it's now 4 snotts. Gone back to the farm as it's only 3. Mind you the our return to the Farm didn't go to well for the Charlton match as the bus didn't turn up...

re: Famous people from Billingham

I know Kevin Howley's son, Mick. I know Kendra, Kenny and Kev Lowe well. Kenny was in Oz, true but he's back now. I think he's spent half his life at the bus-stop outside Asda.

Jamie Pollock did live in Billog. Andrew Davies can be found at the 19th hole at Billingham Golf Club any Sunday afternoon. Gary Pally still pops in occasionally (used to play BGC most Sunday arvos). One lad you all missed is Tony Barras, a stalwart of lower league football and was part of the York team that beat Arsenal (or was it United?), Tony Hall was another lower league player, returned home to Billog a few years ago and settled down I think. I went to school with him. I used to work with Jet's cousin (Youdale family) she brought Hunter to Billog once, I walked into Forbouys and he was standing there posing but I wanted a paper and to get to work, I couldn't be arsed and said 'move you twt' which he thought was hilarious - these southerners eh!? Yeah Bob's family from Billog, Vic and Bob used to muck about in Darlo all the time, Vic wore frilly cuffs even then.

Oh the forum's not getting filled in, they can't do that cos the forum was 'saved(!)' when the theatre was given listed building status. Only way the council can get rid now is arson. But the forum now needs 25m worth of development to bring it up to date and they have just had private funding turned down, so the money is going to come out of the regional poll tax budget. This will mean a hefty increase in poll tax so I may well save the council the job and do it myself.

boringbillog Posted on 9/9 10:43
re: Famous people from Billingham

He did yeah, Willie Maddren's family lived on old Skripka drive after he retired from the game, I think he owned the Wolvo court newsy for a short while before Terry Cooper did.

I saw a photo of billog town centre in the early 60's and comparing it with the town centre of today, that filled in pond is the only real change except for cutting down the plastic shelters outside the cheap fag shop. In 50 years the council has spent nil on improving that town centre. It is officially one of the most depressing town centre's in the uk.

Some of my girlfriend's ex's family support the scum so I bought her young un a Boro top for his 5th birthday to fuckk em off when he goes to see them!!
We have also had some nob heads move next door to the rented house we are in now and they put Newcastle curtains in the lads' room so I made a point of screaming through the wall when Viduka was taking Brum apart and they were losing at Bolton the other week!

I used to think that if ICI Billog ever did go up, the consolation would be that they could start again and probably couldn't do much worse, even if they made it into one giant car park.

Our council are right thieving gits, if you look at the poll tax bill for one house, think about the number of houses in the borough and then look at every single town centre, where exactly IS the money going?? Even when they finally do something around the stadium, the council has no involvement whatsoever. Do you know the council regularly block improvements whenever they are asked to spend a substantial amount of money.

I want to work for the council, their staff xmas party must be well and truly off the scale with all the cash they don't spend.

Didn't Billingham have a fair sized Leeds supporters club? I think they had a coach going from the Swan.

Jamie Pollock used to live on Glebe in Norton.

Claire Hammil was from Port.

Sean Gregan (pro footballer) went to St. Michael's, not sure if it's the same Gregan who captains Leeds United nowadays....

Not a famous person, but famous tarmac - Central Avenue in Billingham was Europe's first dual carriageway, according to an architecture book my mate studied on his degree!

Give it 10 years and I'll be the first name on a new "Famous people from Billingham" thread!

Tony Barras was in my form class at School (St Micks)- and yes we did when the inter form football every year and
Jamie bell lived in the same street as my mam.

Kenny Lowe used to drink in the same pub as me - the Owi, before he went to Australia
Jamie pollock went to St.Micks in Billog, but has always lived in Norton.
Sean Greagan also went to St.Micks

And yes - the Merlin is always heaving when away games are on the dodgy satellite-

You have the right family mate, Graham would have been in the same year as you, you're right. He's living and working in Liverpool right now. He's got a lovely bird and a big townhouse with solid oak floors.

Incidentally, "big TL" I saw Tony Lannon as we were coming out of the north stand after the charlton game. That's not you is it??

re: Famous people from Billingham

The merlin is my local and is a Boro stonghold without question.

Gregan and Pollock were the year above me at St Micks. Campus were legends in my year and won everything an I scored all the goals but Hally took all the credit cos he was captain and signed by Arsenal.

I've thought about devastating the Mackem household on Wolviston road on several occassions.

boringbillog Posted on 9/9 16:25
re: Famous people from Billingham

Leave it out boys, he's an old fella, it's a tiny little bungalow, not exactly a threat!

Tony - someone further up the thread said small world so we will agree with that. :o) I'm in block21 this season so say hello if you see me again. This no smoking in the ground thing I have mixed feelings about, I am using it as an excuse to smoke less and cut down but when I go to the pub after the game I immediately reach for the cigs again it's sods law really. ;o)

LisbonLegend - Tony Hall lived smack behind the Merlin if I remember correctly. Got signed up for Arsenal but end up playing the lower leagues. Andy Mockler I heard supposedly got signed up for Arsenal too but didn't make the grade it seems. He was a decent player though, I'll give him credit for that.

It's my mates house the one with the Garage, Smithy.

No, played footy with him and went to the same training centre for a year.

Lisbonlegend Posted on 9/9 16:58
re: Famous people from Billingham

Boringbillog - It was Graham Hall and he lived off Tunstall. It was me that lived smack behind the Merlin. He captained their FA youth team to victory and looked like he had a bright future. Unfortunately he lacked pace and ended up going to Barnet were he got a bad injury before going nonleague. My other centre back partner for Yarm ended up playnig professionally aswell, Alan Whiite who ended up at Luton and then Chesterfield I think.

Rondo - Yes I am handy and I'd knock seven bells out of your mackem mate but it's lucky that I'm not that way inclined and although I despise his bungalow I recognise that he must be a passionate, even if misinformed, footy fan.

Nah, I was in the year above Carl and the Bainbridges but I did know Jonny aye. I'm drawing a blank on who you are though. At first I thought you might have been either Phil or Rick H but they didn't live on Sherburn. Then I thought you might have been Carl B but he was a year younger than Graham Hall I think. You're going to have to either tell me or give me a better clue, sorry mate.

And I should add that Tony Hall was a footballer who lived near to the Merlin. I only know that 'cos he's related to Corcaigh_the_Cat and myself although a bit more to CTC.

Joe wrote a great book called Savage Arena with some brilliant pictures.

Joe Tasker was from a big family. There were about 9 or 10 kids if I remember rightly. The youngest one will probably be in his early 40's I would think. Lots of them were just known as "Tasker". I would be amazed if your joiner mate wasn't related.

I may be wrong but i seem to remember Anth Hall made it on to the subs bench once for the Boro at Ayresome Park, not sure if he ever got a game.

Don't mention it to Kenny Lowe though, the Boro did'nt think he was up to it ( How wrong they were )which is the real reason why Kenny hates the Mighty Boro.

If you remember where Coatham was, my house was at the end part right in the corner. Our back garden led into Coatham and the front garden led on to a smallish patch of grass. The front used to have loads of trees going right around it. The little Alleyway led from one of the roads off Sherburn through to a smallish bit of grass that was beside my house. The bloke who lived on the other side of that grass always had a sign up on his fence saying playing of ball games is prohibited or something like that. I think Mark L lived next door to him and you knew Mark, didn't you? You must know who I am now? I'm not putting my initals up like.

re: Famous people from Billingham

Billingham is a town just north of the River Tees, in the borough of Stockton-on-Tees, traditionally part of County Durham. The demand for explosives created by the First World War led to a massive expansion of Billingham. In 1917, it was decided by the government to build a plant to produce ammonia. Later this was used predominantly in the production of chemicals for fertiliser. Eventually, in 1926, this plant became part of the newly formed company, ICI. Anhydrite was also mined in the Billingham area from 1928. In 1934 plastics began to be produced there. The introduction to the most recent print of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World states that Huxley was inspired to write the classic novel after a visit to the newly-opened and technologically advanced Brunner and Mond plant at ICI in the 1920s.

From 1971 to 1988 ICI operated a small General Atomics TRIGA Mark I nuclear reactor at its Billingham factory.

In 1983, NIREX announced a proposal to use the now-disused anhydrite mine as a site for the disposal of intermediate level nuclear waste. There was a huge public outcry, since despite the suitability of the site in geological terms, it was very close to a large population centre. Subsequently, in 1985, the plans were dropped.

From 1965 onwards, the town has played host to the Billingham Folklore Festival.

In 2003, the town had the misfortune to be listed in The Idler magazine's book, Crap Towns, an index of the worst places in Britain to live submitted by its readers via a website. Billingham ranked 35th.

The parish church of St Cuthberts, hints at history of the town. It was built in Anglo-Saxon times, and was largely rebuilt around 1170, althought the tower still dates back to the original period. It is believed that the church is so named because it was a resting place for the coffin of St Cuthbert on route to his final resting place of Durham Cathedral.

I believe Billingham is Boro- the Mackem's are a minority- and long may it reign.

The Indian takeaway you mentioned down Old Billy is the Shalimar I think.

By Mick Rafferty do you mean the ice hockey player? The one who ran his cousin over for a daft laff outside the Stoney Oak?

Big Jack O'Connor died about 4 years ago. I know the family well.

Dezzy Harbron once threatened me at school. I was 2 years younger than him and looking back I'm not impressed.

Well I remember you. The casino at Teesside Park? Are they twin girls or 2 seperate occassions? I thought you were gay, did you adopt.

I'm good, stuck in Australia at the minute, going to start job hunting in 2 weeks and in the middle of a fitness drive for an 88km bike ride on November 3rd.

He is Andy Stoddards love child!

I only know who stoddard is because we played football at Bede on a Sunday and for some reason he'd turn up and watch.

The guy ran over by Mick Raff - is he the guy who dances with a chair in the owington farm ?

PumpingGnome Posted on 20/9 10:15
re: Famous people from Billingham

It would not at all surprise me if the guy Raff ran over danced with chairs in any pub at all. It would surprise me even less if he decided that this line of chat up wasn't getting him very far and he took it outside the back for a quick shag. It also wouldn't surprise me if he ended up in North Tees fol;owing the encounter.

Who spends all their time on here?? Who told you that? I only pop on in the morning when I get up and then night time after 8.

Sharky, Jez, Phil Hand and many others are on here aswell. You just have to work out who they are!

How old are you Rondo?
