The Official Official 5th Test Thread

The team will be announced around 10 with the papers making Collingwood favourite to play, winning the toss would be nice as would 340-2 at stumps.

BoroMutt Posted on 8/9 12:43
re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

I'm annoyed that three players got out to a spinner in the first session of a test match. Tresco was unlucky in a way, briliant catch. Vaughan mis-read his shot and Bell should probably not be playing at all. BUT we can push on from here and amass a good enough total to make sure we shouldn't lose. Something over 400 would be nice.

Oh Dear..... 297 - 7

Fatsuma Posted on 8/9 17:34
re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

May I refer the Ministers for Sport and Famine to my earlier statement in the House of Common !

At 297 for 7 - the Aussies are in the ascendency.

If it was 297 for 3 - England would have been.

300 - 4 would have been honours even on the basis that Collingwood would be in and only Jones to follow.

sparkins Posted on 8/9 17:38
re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

Considering that we have had a 150 partnership and an 80 partnership, the middle order have really dropped a bolark. I still think we should have played the extra bowler. If you can't get 400 with 7 batsmen plus Giles then it isn't good enough.

BoroMutt Posted on 8/9 18:14
re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

It aint over yet. If we make 350+ the Aussies may struggle to match it. I have not been impressed by any of the bowlers bar the incredible Warne. Harmison, Hogard and Flintoft should be more effective. Plus if the weather men are to be believed we will have interruptions to play tomorrow and Saturday which will make the lack of an extra bowler less of a problem as our guys rest during rain breaks and the batmen's concentration can be affected.

Come one England.

BobUpndown Posted on 8/9 18:30
re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

Anderson would have shown England were going for a win.. Collingwood, unlucky with his LBW.. is a safer option.. tho still good..

350.. then bowling Friday and Sat, weather will make for an interesting couple of days..

re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

I agree with BoroMutt. If we can get to 350 - and Giles is a good batsman as is Jones - then that's a total we can defend.
This is going to be a rain affected match - I think the task tomorrow morning is just to stay there as long as we possibly can.

need Jones to have a solid innings this morning.. it we can get to lunch and still be bating we'll be doing well.. 350 is the first marker.. 400 would be great after being 4 down early 100's..
Lots of bowling for the lads today, Harmison needs to join the series as he's, by his standards, been poor..

We wont make it to lunch, im pretty sure of that

If Jones and Giles can put on another 30-40 ruuns and we get 360-370 ill be happy

Blogsworth Posted on 9/9 8:53
re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

I think that Jones, Giles, Hoggy and Harmy can get quite a few runs this morning, the Aussies have taken the new ball which means that Lee and McGrath will be bowling rather than Warne which will suit us. Warne seemed to be holding his wrist last night as though he had an injury which is why Ponters took him off...anyway it will without doubt be another cracking days play among the many we have seen this Summer.

Capybara Posted on 9/9 8:57
re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

There's talk on other threads of losing a day to rain. It ain't going to happen.

zaphod Posted on 9/9 9:02
re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

This has been a tail-enders series. England won 2 tests by virtue of runs scored by tailenders and Australia was saved by tailender batting in the 3rd. I expect a continuation of this.

Blogsworth Posted on 9/9 9:02
re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

It would appear that forecasts earlier in the week are a long way wide of the mark....mind its pouring down up here just enough to ruin Yorkshire hope of winning.

Link: Forecast.

Fatsuma Posted on 9/9 9:23
re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

Just a little point of irrelevance for you....

England's first innings scores have been better than their second.

Whereas Australia's second innings scores have been an improvement on their first innings (with one exception when there was a handful of runs difference).

sparkins Posted on 9/9 9:33
re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

If Geraint Jones goes onto make 50 or 60 this morning, which he is more than capable of doing, then I bet people will soon forget his dropped catches earlier in the summer.

In theory, The Oval should be the place for Harmy to really let it go. It is traditionally hard and bouncy (fnarr fnarr) so would love to see him rattling a couple of Aussie helmets early on (kyak kyak). He must be hard work to captain as his whole attitude seems to be governed by if he takes early wickets or not. You can see from the the speed gun, that his confidence is low as when he is really in rhythm he regularly bowls in excess of 90mph, but for long periods in the series he has been struggling to break 85. I hope they have really put there arm around him and Troy Cooley has ironed out any kinks in his action, cos we really need him on all cylinders today.

BobUpndown Posted on 9/9 10:03
re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

Harmy Hoggy and Flintoff will have loads of bowling to do.. Giles, Collingwood and Vaughan tie up the other end.. can't afford to have an off day with the outfield as fast as it is..

Anderson would have been the attacking option, but can be very expensive.. game could have been just as easily lost with him off form..

doesnt the light decision go to the umpires (instead of the batsmen) after a short bad light delay?

BobUpndown Posted on 9/9 17:22

Umpires can also offer it to the fielding team.. dangerous to catch the ball.. etc.. think Aus took it in one of the earlier tests.. or am I thinking of the winter tour of West Indies..

re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

Explained on TMS, the light was offered to the batsmen, once they have accepted it they cannot go back on until there has been a measureable improvement. Additionally, you cannot turn down the light and then change your mind and say "yes it is a bit bad actually I don't fancy it" unless there has been a further deterioration.

In answer to Ned the TMS thoughts on why they took the light is that they are hoping to only bat once and bowl England out cheaply to win. Seems a bit of a forlorn hope to me.

Capybara Posted on 9/9 18:07
re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

They could have had an hour and a half's batting there and could have been up around the 200 mark by the time the rain came, putting real pressure on England. Can't fathom it meself.

Fatsuma Posted on 9/9 18:27
re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

The only explanation I can come with is that the Aussies reckon they have got until Sunday evening to bat, and get a lead of 150 or so, then just bring on Warney to get England out in 3 sessions (which is one less than the average).

If they batted this afternoon/evening the atmospheric conditions may have assisted the English bowlers.

BobUpndown Posted on 10/9 8:21
re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

be nice if the forecast is right today.. and a bit more.. lots of rain..
we lost a whole day to rain in an earlier test.. be nice to be saved by the rain for once..
else we need to bowl a whole lot better to get ANYTHING out of this game..

Link: rain ?

Piquet2 Posted on 10/9 9:38
re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

Looks like it will be a rain affected day, and what is more important is the conditions will have changed, the air will more humid, which means the conditions will be more suited to our three strike bowlers, more movement and swing, what's more important reverse swing, which has been the undoing of the Australians this series........oh and if the rain had not saved the Aussies in the third test it would be all over now.

I just watched South African satellite TV (DSTV) and the Aussie cricket bloke they have was really cocky about the play so far. "Australia will get 500 and put England back in to face Warne" etc. etc. They never learn, do they? They have a couple of good sessions and suddenly they're going to smash England. "Australia never collapse", he said. One of the other commentators pointed out that the last 3 tests have been one long Aussie collapse!

re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

Reallistically they need a lead of at least 200/250 and enough time for Warne to bowl us out, they are 261 behind still, so another 500 runs needed.

A_New_Era Posted on 10/9 11:31
re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

ON another day Hoggard would have had a wicket so far, that was a good lbw shout should have been given

To be honest, if Aussies bat until tomorrow but we restrict them to about 400-450 then it gives us a good chance. If we bat until the final day we should win it, all depends how we go about batting because so far this series we have got alot of runs very quickly and havent really batted for more than a day and a session

If Australia get a lead of only 70-90 and if the weather holds up it will be enough. Ever since Warne bowled Gatting around his big fat backside all those years ago ALL English batsmen have crapped themselves everytime he gets the ball in his hand. It is only English batsmen who have a problem with Warne, the Pakistani, Indian, South African batsmen never have the problems that we have. He is a great bowler but it is all in the mind with our lot as soon as he comes on there is a distinct smell of shyte in the air.

blogsworth "It is only English batsmen who have a problem with Warne, the Pakistani, Indian, South African batsmen never have the problems that we have"

that's right, his zillion wickets in test cricket are 99% english bottlers, with only token victims from the rest of the worlds lower orders

...and daryll cullinan (sp) didn't employ a sports psych to help him overcome his problems with warne

Blogsworth Posted on 10/9 15:00
re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

I think the term "English bottlers" is slightly over the top but never the less every time he turns his arm over they expect it to turn 3/4 feet which of course it doesn't so they are always shuffling accross the line of the ball or they don't move their feet prefering to shove the pad down the wicket and they are always liable to get out caught pad bat/bat pad they are their own worst enemies...all that is needed is a bit of concentration and for them to apply themselves but they have convinced themselves that they are going to get out...and they do.

100 overs or thereabout tomorrow. England HAVE to still be batting at Tea. No need to declare, no need to go for the win. Just put runs on the board in the 60 overs up until tea, so even if they do get bowled out after tea the Aussies don't have enough time to knock them off.

Still wouldn't mind if a shower of two landed on the Oval tomorrow !!!

Final day today of an enthralling series. According to reports this morning a full days play is almost guaranteed.

I'm really looking forward to todays cricket [I think]

we need either a bright sunny day, little help for the pace attack (no swing).. or dour overcast with heavy cloud.. (bad light)..

worst case is cloudy but playable.. getting clearer as the ball will move early doors while we bat and then be a flat pitch for their run chase..

there is still milage in this game tho can only see a draw at best for england.. tho an Ausie inspired Warne win is still a big threat..

steady correct and steely bating application needed today..

Collingwood.. superb form for Durham.. need a steady innings, with runs, from both him and PK..
as Aus will be batting later and may as well go down 3-1 as 2-1.. they will go for it 20-20 style..

mf_c Posted on 12/9 12:43
re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

133 ahead, 5 wickets remaining, 1 session down.

We need to survive 2 more hours, 30 more overs, ideally adding about 100 more runs. What it critical is that after tea it is 2 England batsmen walking out and not the Aussie batsmen. If we are still in bat after tea with a lead of more than 200 we should be OK.

Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood, Geraint Jones, Ashley Giles, Matthew Hoggard, Steve Harmison your country needs you NOW !!!

Pieterson is hanging in by his fingertips how he has managed to syrvive I don't know but he has and long may it continue. We need a stand from these 2 to eat up some of the 74 overs that remain and also to get us up towards a lead of 200...but you don't always get what you want and at this moment in time the way Australia are bowling I would make them favourites.

re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

There are 57 overs left. Lose 2 for the change of innings and it's 55. If England can bat for another 15 and score 50 or so it will be a very stiff target for the Aussies.

204 the lead, two boundaries off Tait's first two balls.

re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

If it wasnt for Shane Warne the aussies would be a very very ordinary side IMHO.

And the ashes would be well won by us by now, god i hate him!

re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

Off Skys web commentary..

201-7 - The current scenario is that Australia would be chasing 208 off 54 overs although if the end of the innings does not coincide with tea at 3.10pm that would become 52 overs.

14 more overs, c'mon lads.. 250ish..

Piquet2 Posted on 12/9 14:56
re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

Even with Warne, if not for the day lost in the 3rd test the ashes would be ours now, and this test would have been a formality.

Funny how many people are calling for the cricketing equivalent of keeping the ball in the corner flag with a minute to go at home.........

Buddy, taking it to the corner flag in this instance will lead to victory overall.
Can't really compare it with playing for a draw.

They are more or less there now, I reckon.

sunset in London 19:22.. last hours play called after 84 overs..

I'd have players out on the ropes and Collingwood, if needed, on his longest ever run up..

221 and Tea!! back at 15:30.. probably 3.5 hours play available.. bring it on home lads!!

So pleased for KP.
Cos on Saturday morning Boycott was mentioning that he has the capability of being an excellent cricketer, but just needs to concentrate more.
Well I think he has today boycs- Helped in parts by a steady if not spectacular innings from Collingwood

75 - I'll remind you of that when we scrape into the Champions League by one point.

re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

Got to tea, another milestone out of the way. Just keep batting. Another 15-20 overs and we'll have eaten away more time, put more runs on the board and taken more overs out of the Overs remaining column.

Still too close to call.

Amazing, entering the last session of the last test and the ashes are still in the balance.

re: The Official Official 5th Test Thread

Three in three and there might JUST be a game in it. Just. It's nearly all over. 236-7. 43 overs left.
