10 German Bombers......cringeworthy !!!

Why oh why do England fans continue to sing this embarrasing rubbish. If we were playing Germany I could sort of understand it but when we're playing the team whose country was invaded to start the bloody war it's just plain pathetic.

Have never quite understood why it was sang in Vilareal !!!!!

If its "just a song" why is it so dear to your hearts ?

It not only shows a cultual unawareness, it doesn't actually make sense.

That and "No Surrender" make me embarrased to be a football fan, especially when sang in Irish bars.

re: 10 German Bombers......cringeworthy !!!

That's just it though, it isn't just a song. Songs at football matches should be about banter/rivalry between the 2 teams playing, not about who won World War II.

Now far be it from me being in the PC brigade but it's embarrasing and, in my opinion, more racist than pretty much anything

holgate_rochey Posted on 12/10 20:04

Whilst I agree with you totally Matrix, IMHO it's not really racist.

It shows ignorance and a unwillingness to move on from events over 60 years ago, and as you say has bog all to do with football.

Sorry I'm missing the point here. Just a song?

Are they singing it just generally (Come on England! and all that!!) or pointing out to the Poles that they were invaded and we would have stopped it and all the genocide that resulted!

Must go and check my history books!

its cringeworthy and typical englishness and shows us up as being so out dated and holding onto soemthing that most of europe have moved on from. there are specials dates in the calender to celebrate winning the world war. No doubt it will be sung at full voice in germany next summer -in the streets and stadiums

re: 10 German Bombers......cringeworthy !!!

I know holland was occupied but if I remember rightly the Dutch didn't put up a fight did they.

I'm keen to go to Germany next summer for the finals however I fear that drunken English fans singing that will have more chance of starting trouble if there is going to be any and thats not something I want to be part of. It'll only take a few hundred singing it somewhere like Hamburg to wind up the locals.

Dont go then Matrix, you have the choice. You also have the choice as to whether you join in with a song or not. It is just a song and you vcan judge people all you want who sing it, but I sang it in Lisbon and the Algarve last year.

Very good football song and you need to get over your own importance. Tere are lots of things we all dont like, but this is just a song.

Lets not forget the Dutch also like to sing it.

"10 German bombers" is just embarrassing. Some people really need to get over World War 2 or go back to school and learn what it's really about. (You wouldn't find any of the veterans joining in with it, that's for sure.)

As for "No Surrender", it's a song of the far-right, plain and simple. God knows how it's made it into the mainstream, but it's quite alarming that it has.

BoroMutt Posted on 12/10 22:18
re: 10 German Bombers......cringeworthy !!!

It should be noted that some of those RAF pilots shooting down those German bombers would probably have been Poles. 139 of whom flew and fought to defend this country as part of the RAF. They provided the highest non British element in the RAF, next came NZ with 98 (only seven yanks)

Which makes singing it "at" the Polish doubly stoopid.

MyBoro Posted on 12/10 23:18

Matrix, its a football song. Its got everything to do with football when people at matches sing it. Thats it. The subject matter in songs is often about other things. But as only thousands want to sing it you must be correct.

Both those songs are about local rivalry that both sides can identify with and are specific to both of the clubs. Singing about the heroics of the RAF against Hitlers Germany while Middlesbrough are playing a Spanish side or when England are playing 1 of the countries that helped us to defeat Hitlers Germany is just plain stupid.

It is in the mainstream because the IRA are/were a terrorist organisation attacking and killing british/english citizens. It seems quite normal for the mainstream to include a core of people who abhore terrorism against there fellow english man, regardless of the right or wrongs of any irish republican cause, and want to sing there stance that terrorist should not be negotiated with. Its bugger all to do with the far-right, even if the far-right have used it as a call to arms. Should the mainstream also avoid the flag of St George and not have closely cropped hair?

MyBoro - If you got valid reasons I'll listen to them, thats why I asked !!

It brings you happy memories from Euro 2004 which is fair enough as thats personal to you but that was a football tounament hosted in Portugal where we never played the German national team and our fans were singing about shooting down the luftwaffe.........I'm struggling for the connection there.

It's a stupid and offensive chant, but so are a lot of football chants. The relevance of singing it when we play a particular team is missing the point. Sunderland fans still sing songs about hating Newcastle when they play other teams. Man City fans still sing about hating Man U when they play other teams. It's just something they do, and this bombers song has become part of the repertoire of the England supporters, whatever game they're playing.

The English think they were the only ones involved in the WORLD war. The English think they are the only ones with reason it hate the Germans. How blinkered.

There is a masive difference between 'Germans bombed our chippie' and Germans murdered 250,000 people, took another 500,000 away as slave labour and then deliberately starved another 50,000 to death as an act of revenge against resistance.

Everywhere on mainland Europe has FAR more reason to hate the Germans. But they wouldn't act in this infantile manner.

It's not offensive or anything, just embarrasing and shows up the english for what they are. no doubt it wil be sang in the streets of germany next summer, mobile in one hand and beer glass in the other and singing it to passers by.

I went to the England match on Saturday. This song was getting sung constantly in the pub before the match. Then somebody changed to words to:-

"there were 8 Paki bombers on bus
8 Paki bimbers on a bus"
"And a policman from Scotland Yard shot one dead"

I couldn't belive it.It wasn't just getting sung by pissed up groups of lads, but i saw a father who had his young kids with him and a middle aged couple.
I can can safely say i didn't enjoy the pre match atmosphere or indeed the match because there always seemed to be a underlying tension.I can see why things kick off abroad.

The dutch sing it ?
Funny, I have watched a fair few Dutch games, lived and worked in Amsterdam, and never heard anthing that could be construed as anti german.
Yes, mutual mickey taking from the germans to the dutch and vice versa, but never heard what could be construed as anti german sentiment.

I think it's the racist and jingoistic overtones that are offensive, and some of the tool heads that sing it.

Having been stuck on a train from Darlo with a crowd singing "chicken supper Bobby Sands" I think I have experienced some of the nastier sentiments behind such songs.

Matrix, give me a buzz, I need som network advice.

re: 10 German Bombers......cringeworthy !!!

Why do the defenders of this song call it a "great song"?
It clearly isn't. It's nothing more than a nursery rhyme counting song for grown-up mouth breathers.

moxzin Posted on 13/10 18:35
re: 10 German Bombers......cringeworthy !!!

Its a simplistic but heartfelt celebration and showing of appreciation for the brave and admirable RAF who performed great deeds in the Second World War and it has a great sense of defence, of a siege mentality, of Britain standing alone. It might not be appropriate at football matches, but then again, international football stirs those emotions. And it is laughable that anyone could find it offensive, "offensive" is just bandied around these days, can anyone actually find it offensive/hurtful etc? If so how would you feel if you watched World at War and actually saw those things happening on-screen? Yes being proud of British history might make some people uncomfortable (namely, the "progressives" amongst us) but surely no-one should begrudge patriotic English fans singing patriotic English songs, however crude they may be.

Moxy "it is laughable that anyone could find it offensive", I agree it isn't offensive, it's "cringeworthy", or embarrassing if you prefer it is unlikely to offend any Germans!

"Its a simplistic but heartfelt celebration and showing of appreciation for the brave and admirable RAF who performed great deeds in the Second World War" is it bollox you daft arse. Pseduo-intellectual hosshyt.

When we played Sunlun they always sing songs about the mags, according to the Sunlun message boards this "drives us wild", no it doesn't I find I'm embarrassed for them. The Geordies do the same it is cringeworthy.

If we were playing the Germans it would be a great song to sing to them to try and wind them up. I doubt it would but there you go. However, on Wednesday night we were playing the Poles one of our wartime allies. Those of them that understood the words must have left the ground very confused.

Similarly some Boro fans singing it when we played Spanish, Portugese and other opposition - sad.

If you want to sing somthing patriotic or "English" try learning Jerusalem.

re: 10 German Bombers......cringeworthy !!!

I've been to one England International. It was a Euro Champs qualifying game at Wembley in 1991. It was a 1-1 draw.

The vile, racist, violent, anti-Irish, anti-Catholic behaviour that went on that night made me ashamed to be English, ashamed to be a football fan, and ashamed to be in the company of these morons. This behaviour included one lad (agedabout 25) standing up and punching a man aged about 65 smack in the face as he walked up the gangway for the heinous crime of wearing a green and white scarf.

These were morons who thought it was hilariously funny and no doubt 'good craic'.

I'll never watch England live again. Ever.

"Its a simplistic but heartfelt celebration and showing of appreciation for the brave and admirable RAF who performed great deeds in the Second World War"

This has to be the most ridiculous thing you've ever posted, mox. If you think that's the motivation behind singing the song, you're taking the piss, mate. Rememberance Day and other days like it are how we express our thanks, not by singing about shooting German bombers down at football matches. They sing it because football fans like to wind the fans of their "enemies" up.

And how does disliking this song make you unpatriotic? Give me a break, FFS. There's a difference between being proud of the men who gave so much for us and being jingoistic. It IS offensive, in the same way as you'd find it offensive if some Muslims started singing "there were 10 infidels on the tube..."

littlejimmy Posted on 13/10 19:18

Dear Mr guderian
(interesting you name yourself after one of the werhmachts leading panzer generals yet make jingoistic comments, perhaps renaming yourself to Liddel Hart may be more appropriate)

If your grandfather had looked at the gun in his hands he would note that the steel probably came from Sheffield, Teesside or wales, the propellent for the bullets was almost certainly manufactured by ICI, the clothes on his back being made from wool from New Zealend or the cotton from India.

Please do not attempt to argue, you lack the intellect to do so.

moxzin Posted on 13/10 22:43
re: 10 German Bombers......cringeworthy !!!

littlejimmy, as has been discussed many times on this subject, the construction of the song is important. Its not, "there were 10 Lancester Bombers in the air, bombing the fck out of Dresden" or anything like that (which would be rather offensive IMO to Germans) but its about German/Nazi bombers flying over here to bomb our civilians (which they did) and the brave RAF fighters defending England by shooting them down (which they did). Where is the offence. I see admiration for one of England's finest moments - standing up a hugely powerful aggressor.

Now, if you want to argue with me that, like the "No Surrender" song (which again I'm sure the most offensive elements in another forum we'd have no problem with - should we surrender to the Ira? Are they scum?) it has been hijacked by xenophobes, theunthinking, or the mischievious and is probably overused....then fine, you may have a point. But to argue that the song is inherently offensive is just a crude attempt to bludgeon away celebration of our history. As some have stated, many other nations evoke military imagery in their song, and it has to be more prevalent and relevant to us, an island nation who came so close, no-one must forget how close, and we pulled through.

If that isn't worth remembering or celebrating and not being "offended" by, I don't know what is.

Mox, old son. If you aren't having a laugh with this, I'm afraid you're making yourself look very silly. I know you'd love to cast me as some kind of unpatriotic lefty fool, but the fact is that in the context of the kind of songs England fans sing, this is not a song of rememberance, it's at best jingoistic, and at worst offensive. Like sasboro says, why don't you hear Welsh and Scottish fans singing it? The words may not be offensive per se, but the intent definitely is.

How can anyone come out with comments like 'well not all the RAF were English'...IT'S FOOTBALL...since when have footy fans cared about such details! Bet u all have a 'nice family day out' at the footy these days and whinge about the price of a burger, chips n coke!!!

re: 10 German Bombers......cringeworthy !!!

I won't sing it as it trivialises what happened over 60 years ago. I'm not comfortable with trivialising summat like WW2 as it is disrespectful to those who fought and died for this country.

Matrix, I can't help wondering if those who do remember the war also cringe when they hear it. If the song was sung at the height of the blitz to keep spirits up, then fair enough. The song has it's time and place and this ain't it. Anyway, we're all friends now aren't we?

Mind you, I think it'd be ok to sing it to German neo-nazis next summer. They are scum.

MontTeettyBlanc Posted on 14/10 14:37
re: 10 German Bombers......cringeworthy !!!

Soz if this repeats anyone's earlier thread but I've got two points to make about all this.

Firstly, did any of the people advocating signing patriotic war songs at modern day football matches actually serve in the war? Because funnily enough, although my granddad served in the navy and actually fought and got injured for his country, he never, from what I can remember from going to football matches with him as a kid, relived his past glories, patriotism and pride by chanting that kind of cr@p so why do people feel the need now, all those years on, to do so? Maybe he actually realised that football and war are not, amazingly, connected in any way shape or form.

And secondly, why are people talking about being proud to be English and being resistant to the IRA when a) only a tiny minority of you will have ever felt threatened by the IRA cause and b) still seem happy to justify this kind of singing as just enjoying the 'craic', a word I'm guessing originates in the not-very-English-at-all country of Ireland (the clues in the name lads). And again, what the fook is the connection?

riverboat_captain Posted on 14/10 15:29
re: 10 German Bombers......cringeworthy !!!

If you watch replays of the 66 world cup final, there are German and English flags all over Wembley Stadium. There was no trouble and no songs of this nature, and this just 21 years after the end of the war.

Therefore, to suggest that these songs are sung to celebrate our proud history is just plain wrong. This song only surfaced about 45 years after the war.

boro74 Posted on 14/10 15:35
re: 10 German Bombers......cringeworthy !!!

As a song I think it's fairly moronic. I think it 's sung to provoke.

sasboro Posted on 14/10 15:41
re: 10 German Bombers......cringeworthy !!!

Although this song is not offensive, i do think that it was started off by certain groups of people who have more than a bit of banter for their political thoughts. maybe i'm reading too much into it. reminds me of that chelsea song. maybe started by some of the same people

If you are gonna have banter with the germans then stick to football and that 5-1 win or the world cup in 66.

Football grounds are always a good way for certain people to spread their political thoughts.

Some english fans are too naive and just sing along with stuff like this.

re: 10 German Bombers......cringeworthy !!!

Riverboat - don't get me wrong mate, I'm not saying wartime pride and pattriotism is the REAL reason why these songs are now sung at the football, but I was having a go at the people who justify their racism/xenophobia by playing the 'war' card when people like our grandparents, who might actually have a good reason to dislike the Germans having fought them, don't. It's obvious shyte like that actually comes down to violent, drunken nutters who want to spoil the game for everyone else, and think, in some twisted way, they are the epitome of what being a true Brit is all about. Then others who are too daft to know any better join in.
