Kinnel Egga!, there's a blast from the past. One of the more mature of that mob as I remember.

The last time I saw Fatty he was with his missus, who was quite tasty (this was about 15 years ago in the Acklam Hotel mind).

It was always best to be on the same side as Spankovitch. I remember getting off the service tain at Manchester once and he was there waiting for Manure fans coming in.

Normally it was supposed to be their station and they were supposed to put a reception commitee on for visitng fans but Spanky had other plans.

He almost decked my mate from Thorn Abbey cos he was wearing a black Fred Perry tee-shirt (with the red and white border on the collar)

"Ow mate, that's fuggan Man U colours that init?"

re: Who stood on the holgate @ ayreso

Grew up with the Croftys, Ian and David (RIP).
Eldest Ian was a superb footballer and virtually every club around was after him as a young un.
Both decent lads grew up on Raggy had their moments but were proper mates.

re: Who stood on the holgate @ ayreso

Jeez, judging by the number of RIPs it seems standing on the Holgate was bad for your health.

Come_On_Boro_the_1st Posted on 18/10 20:37
re: nutters who stood on the holgate @ ayresome

I was never really physically equipped for first degree violence and in the days of the BBB I was only a young whipper snapper, but I well recall seing some of the names mentioned herein sprayed on the walls around Ayresome.

Morally one shouldn't condone thuggery of course, but in those days I always found some consolation in a home defeat, in the fact that the away fans who had been mocking us during the ninety minutes of sanctuary within Ayresome Park, would indeed find that it was 'a long way to the station..'

It would be an interesting social experiment to make the away coaches park down the Dock Road by Baldwins yard and see whether a new generation of 'Nutters' would emerge to seek restitution for a home defeat from silencing gobby away fans in the time honoured fashion.

borobadge Posted on 18/10 20:58
re: who stood on the holgate @ ayresome

"it seems standing on the Holgate was bad for your health"-

is that a paradox ?

sure is a lot of good lads gone..boro through and through..and the craic was mighty...they worked (when they could) and played hard...

the snivelling whinging shytes of today get my goat...

All a little before my time, just.

I can only add one that might grace this list, Yan, Yan the Cider man.

re: who stood on the holgate @ ayresome

Not sure of the year just now knows its a good few years.. think he`s buried in Durham rd cemetary.
What I know was he left the chip pan on or something and the fumes from the fire took his life.
See his sister now and again.
Played footer with Dave and went to quite a few away matches with him, went to Liverpool away league 1976 we were 14 and some 8 to 10 year old kids said to us hey lads are you from the Boro Dave looked at them turned and said "why ya scruffy little gits"
he got 3 boiling hot cups of oxo over his head and then they ran off...later he chuckled he would have done the same

swordtrombonefish Posted on 18/10 22:40
re: who stood on the holgate @ ayresome

Jimmy White? hung around with Bram (Normanby) there was a lad called Taffy as well that had a cosh with him most of the time.

Tom from the well known Hoe's - I always remember him wearing a demim jacket, was a bloody handful when he went off it (and mostly did at the match).

I knew Tommo from school, the rest through him but not as well - mostly from the matches, no a regular thing but if we met up in the town before the game....some real craik with them lads, mad as hatters. You might know or remember Jacko, Dabsy, Aco, Decca, Paddy, Chaz, Billy Mac, to name but a few - all Eston / Normanby / Whale hill lads.....

Yeah Ive managed Sunday league teams and his nephew played against us, chatted to Ian for quite a bit he was well and on form and really funny. To me he always had a good heart and for a little fella he was lightning fast. Hell of a footer player in his day but he wasted his time cos he had alot of talent.

Fatty Fergo, I was stood behind him at Leeds behind their goal, the season we were locked out of our end. Fatty just smacked someone, then utter bedlam, created a lovely space though.

Again against Leeds at roughly the same time, the lad who stood in the Leeds corner at AP. He suddenly went heap-shiit again a a massive space opened and he nipped off down the stairs, a top quality lunatic.

Fatty Fergo the elder or Fatty Fergo the younger? There were two brothers.

I remember standing in the Holgate once and over to one side (near the corner flag) Fatty Fergo was knocking hell out of someone. Then right opposite, at the other side, the other Fatty Fergo was doing exactly the same to someone else. They were like a pair of bookends.

To be fair billybalfour, seeing Deano stood on the Holgate would have been a very rare site indeed, as he generally didn't go to home games. If he did South stand seats would have been where you were more likely to find him.

Funny someone mentioned one of his pranks on here a couple of weeks ago. When he climed to the top of the stand and walked along the girders at Villa park.

Ginger Laxy once saw him at Chelsea away in the play-offs with a few aging retired boffer boys. Before the game a gang of around 20-30 walked by the pub near the ground that was full of Chelsea fans. They all came running out to confront the Boro lads. Usual stuff occurred, goading etc. Then a handful of brave Chelsea fans thought they would charge at them. Laxy and another guy (another big fooker) met them full on. It was not a pretty sight and over with pretty quickly. Needless to say, all the Chelsea fans ran back to the pub. Police came and then escorted the boro to the game.

re: nutters who stood on the holgate @ ayreso

Just read all the way down the 'People who stood on the Holgate' thread, and have to say that the recurrent name to beat them all is that of not-so-well-to-do vet's son.... YAN HAITH! The mere mention of those 2 words bring back some outrageous memories. It is my firm belief that Mr Haith deserves a thread all of his own. So here's my starter for ten.

I met Yan through a college mate - in about 1978. I went to the Art College in the Boro, and we drank every day in the Linthorpe. One Friday night I went up to take me game my of pool that I'd had my name up on the board for, for ages, in the bar, and as I went to rack the balls up, I heard this crazed voice behind me issue the threat.... "Ow, if you rack them up bud, I'll have to "tap yer f***ing napper off"! The latter part of the threat was issued in the most alarming gutteral snarl.
'Oh you don't know me mate Yan do ya?' Says Simon. And so began 3 or 4 years of complete madness!

First observation, deffo, he must have had 7 Wrangler jackets and 7 pairs of Wrangler Jeans in his wardrobe, either that, or he never got changed. It's all he ever wore for the 4 years or so I knocked about with him!

His dad was a vet, and they did indeed live in that big house / surgery at the top of Linnie Village. His dad had a massive drinks cabinet, and on me 21st birthday when we'd been out since about 11 in the morning, then to the match, then back to the Linnie and we ran out of money, he went home, broke into the cabinet and came back to The Linnie with a litre bottle of Bells Whiskey which I was then force feda bout a pint of! Last thing I remember was going out for some fresh air, collapsing, cracking me head on a wall, then waking up at home next morning. This proves he was a generous sort!

He DID indeed also ride a unicyle! Many happy summer nights spent in the Linne beer garden marvelling at the type of skills required to keep a wrangler clad hoolie who's quaffed about 15 pints of Sam Smiths best on a one wheeled cycle for over an hour!!!!! He'd do it with a pint in one hand and an Embassy Regal in the other! Priceless.

Of course, his away trips were legendary. Many Fridays in The Linnie he'd just dissappear. You'd find out on Monday that he'd just decided to hitch by himself to the next days game in Portsmouth, or... Oxford or somewhere. Armed with only one of those plastic 'flagons' of cider and his trusty Regal tabs!

I did hear one story of a similar trip he made to a notorious Birmingham City in the early 80's. I have to say I wasn't there, so maybe this is one of them 'urban legends' but anyway.... Same drill, Yan is said to have hitched down by himself, arriving in the city completely wrecked. So much so, that he inadvertantly made his way into the dodgiest home fans pub. The assembled Zulu Warriors couldn't actually believe what they were seeing. One lad, in the home pub, telling them all that he was gonna have a few beers, them make his way into the home end, by himself.... and .... "tap their f****ing nappers off"!!!! The story goes they even bought his beer, before accompanying him into the home end themselves!!! He came back with some serious facial disfigurements that weekend. So he obviously had kicked off, before finding himself outnumbered 10,000 to one!!!!!

Too many stories, too many memories. Yan Haith certianly wasn't everyones cup of tea. When he started going cross eyed at about 11pm you had to be careful what you said! But he was, non the less, a legend in his own time!!!

Cogeur_le_Conq Posted on 21/10 14:26
re: nutters who stood on the holgate @ ayreso

The police wouldn't let me on the special train to sunlun in 1979 so I had to make the journey on my own on the rattley auld service train.

I was reasonably incognito except for MFC written above the left tit pocket of my wrangler jacket in think felt pen, but I managed to keep it pretty much covered up as all the smackums starting piling on from Hartlepool onwards.

When the train pulled in at sunlun I was the only Boro fan getting off among all the horrible ginner freckly missing links.

I spied Yan at the end of the platform staggering about on his own to greet the train and hoped I could slip past him without him seeing me.

No chance.

He has a massive union flag on his back with Middlesbrough written across it and he opened it up like batman and bellowed "NOW COGGGGAHH YOU UGLY TVVAT".

How we never got battered I'll never know but I got follied across the bridge, all the way to Roker.

He tried to get me to go in one of their boozers just the two of us and take them on.

I left him to it.

Same one, I know Paul O Brien as well. I taught him how to play pool.

Billy can you let me know when he's back over, I'll nip in the steelworks and have a couple of drinks with him.

re: nutters who stood on the holgate @ ayreso

T'was a little bit of fun. I used to play in the same pool team as Paul, it was so fustrating playing him. Could never get away with the safety first game he played. and no I'm not Franny, or his brother Kevin.

When you speak to Dean next, tell him his captain from The Broadway was asking after him.

He won't recognise darmok at all.

He wasn't hard but he knew no fear when his was ratarsed.

He was a nuisance when you were trying to keep a low profile at away games.

re: nutters who stood on the holgate @ ayreso

thats right erimus 11 dabsey drinks in the cora

used to work and drink with him several times over the years

remember in the holgate in 1977 when we were playing ipswich and that day the usual stockton v eston thing wasnt kicking off as usual

anyway for some reason due to a boring game the boro boot boys started on the old bill

remember about 20 piling in and DAN BOONE being carried out by 10 burly coppers above their heads, they were giving him a good kicking too

2 minutes later came dabsey who also recieved a good kicking too

the coppers took a few sly digs too and them black coats they were wearing suddenly turned white

fooking dirty habit ive always thought spitting

you could always guarentee some fun and games in the holgate

missed it years later when i became a boo boy in the chicken run

Must have had talented coppers in old days Fabio-carrying someone above their heads AND kicking him aswell. Don't make cops like that nowadays

re: nutters who stood on the holgate @ ayreso

fabio - I knocked around with dabbsy in our late teens, early 20's.
We spent nearly every night in the Westminster pub and had a rare old time.
Remember my mate getting a clip off Jonka Teasdale in the Holgate cos he banged into him when the crowd surged forward.
Also remember going to Cardiff during promotion year in 73-74 on the only coach that went, with Jonah and few other hardy souls. Coach set off at midnight to get there so had to spend hours in Cardiff before the game - getting chased all over!

Brock, Charlie, Woody, Bolly and Jake were all members of the Bob End Crew.

Did Jeff Pyle use to drink in the White Rose? If so, I wondn't describe him as a nutter.

LITTLE JIMMY MAC

Cogeur_le_Conq Posted on 24/10 13:50
re: nutters who stood on the holgate @ ayreso

Jimmy Mac was a psycho.

I once saw him running with a concrete based waste bin above his head towards a bloke with a shotgun after the UK Subs gig at Scarborough.

Wack was quiet in comparison and he'll be the first to admit his arse collapsed on the Seven Sisters Rd when Spurs were pulling blades on us.

He ran into a shop and locked the door behind him

what a LUMP

Bongobill Posted on 24/10 17:42
re: nutters who stood on the holgate @ ayresome

I know a couple of the Billingham lads named above. Had there times at the games long before I started going as they have a (good )few years on me.

Woody's brother often posts on here and was in Xanthi. He brought his mate George!

Charlie D still goes to the games, mostly with his son or dad. See him at most reserve games, and sat with him at a "do" the other night. I think most of his clan was in Zurich, apart from him. (werent they Pete?)

Jake was in Zurich.

See Brock two or three times a year. Stag nights and a weekend in Blackpool.
