MS

This Sunday I'm doing the Sydney to Woolongong (55mile) bike ride to raise money for the muscle wasting disease Multiple Sclerosis.

The reason I'm doing it is cos my Uncle Tom died from it. I remember when I was a young lad he used to play footy with me over the field and as I grew up I saw him go from a fit healthy person to bed ridden and struggling to speak or do anything for himself before he eventually died. It's a horrible heartless disease.

MS is thought to be an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS consists of the brain, spinal cord, and the optic nerves. Surrounding and protecting the nerve fibers of the CNS is a fatty tissue called myelin, which helps nerve fibers conduct electrical impulses.

In MS, myelin is lost in multiple areas, leaving scar tissue called sclerosis. These damaged areas are also known as plaques or lesions. Sometimes the nerve fiber itself is damaged or broken.

Myelin not only protects nerve fibers, but makes their job possible. When myelin or the nerve fiber is destroyed or damaged, the ability of the nerves to conduct electrical impulses to and from the brain is disrupted, and this produces the various symptoms of MS.

I've never really cycled more than 15 miles before so I'm probably going to need a stretcher at the end but I'm determined to finish it. I'll be wearing my Boro shirt for the ride to bring me good luck, hopefully I'll pass a few Man Utd shirts on the way.

Come on Boro!

re: MS

LL - can I suggest you got to the website JustGiving.com and set yourself up a fundraising homepage and once you have done that come back on here, post a link to your page and get people to sponsor you via their credit and debit cards. The money goes straight to the charity and for UK tax payers Gordon Brown gives them an extra 28p for every pound pledged.

Ok, I'm not, I'll have a look into your suggestion Boksic.

Lisbonlegend Posted on 1/11 9:23
re: MS

Well I hope the tests results are good news Scarbs.

MS is a chronic, unpredictable neurological disease that affects the central nervous system. MS is not contagious and is not directly inherited. Most people with MS have a normal or near-normal life expectancy. The majority of people with MS do not become severely disabled.

My Uncle had a very bad form of it but most people don't suffer with it like he did.

There is no cure for MS yet, but drugs can help slow the course and/or symptoms in some patients.

Lisbonlegend Posted on 1/11 9:38
re: MS

Thanks for the idea Boksic. Here it is, let's hope I get at least one sponsor as I hate asking for money.

I joined the RAF in 96 after messing around for a few years, been posted to Waddington just outside Lincoln(twice). I found out yesterday I've been promoted which will mean moving camps, hopefully nearer home. It also means signing on for 22 years service so I'll finish when I'm 42 with a payout/pension and possibly emigrate. Got married in 98, no kids yet, nice dog though. I'll be moving in Febuary/March don't know where though which sucks balls.

Yes I'm married to Sarah she's a primary school teacher and is currently undertaking her headship training. Well I was a process Technology Chemist for 11 years, studied at Teesside Uni part time for donkeys but now I'm working in IT in Sydney for a bit. Off to live in Brighton/London in a fortnight after I've been to the Barrier Reef and Melbourne. I'm going back cos of a few personal problems including my mam being diagnosed with a tumour on her kidney. I don't really want to go back to England but have to unfortunately. If it's any good I'll stay but if I'm not happy I'll be back here in January.

Physically and mentally this is going to be the hardest thing I've ever done in my life. I'm really hoping it's a downhill finish and especially praying that there's going to be no wind on Sunday. I've not seen the route but I've been cycling around Roseville in North Sydney and it's a killer. My bro did it last year and said there's some big hills, I'm praying he's just winding me up!

Robbo1986 Posted on 1/11 22:40

The Northern Beaches were a fantastic place to be based. I had a flat that was 2 min. walk to the beach max. Dee Why itself was a bit downmarket compared to the other areas (and probably still is) but still, I loved it!!! I did venture to the beach quite often.

I don't know South Sydney at all. I think the furthest south I ventured was The Glebe!!

You'll be OK, as long as its downhill!

Just Giving is a great website. I used it last year for the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust, as I was donating bone marrow to an anonymous woman.

Hoof means you hoof teh thread up to the top of the board so that more people will read it, otherwise it slides down and noone will see it and I'll get no more sponsors.

re: MS

When I was about 9 and talking to my uncle when he was bed ridden he showed me a book and I vividly remember a photo of someone who had supposedly spontaneously combusted like it was yesterday.

The image of that photo has stuck with me for about 20 years.

How bizarre.

Enjoy the Barrier Reef mate, watch out for those 15ft tiger sharks!!!

Lisbonlegend Posted on 3/11 21:39
re: MS

Cheers Jara. That fills me with confidence!

I can't believe I'm going to do a 55 mile bike ride and then go scuba diving the next day. I can see me just sinking to the bottom of the ocean with cramp in every muscle!

jarazinho Posted on 3/11 21:49
re: MS

Dont forget to ask your dive instructor about flying so soon after a dive???dont think you will have a problem..if its your first dive you might only go down to 10/15 metres..still check anyway..

re: MS

Good point Jara. Don't want my head exploding on the way to Melbourne.

jarazinho Posted on 3/11 22:17
re: MS

not sure if you will have time or not...try and check out Port Douglas, about 25 min drive north of Cairns..you can get out to the reef from there also...nice little village/town...not much in Cairns apart from backpackers/pubs/restaurants etc...its more of a place where tourists just "base"themselves before heading to the Daintree,Reef etc..etc...

Only 22 and a half hours to go.......Oh dear, what have I let myself in for.

It's raining and 22C here in Sydney at the moment so I could have a sore wet bum tomorrow.

Lisbonlegend Posted on 4/11 21:37
re: MS

Sundays forecast
Mainly fine. Chance late shower. SE/NE winds.
Min: 17CMax: 23C

It doesn't look like it's going to be too hot (touch wood) which is a bonus, I just need it to be wind free....

re: MS

Surely it would depend which way the wind is blowing ? From the back would be fine and may even supply additional 'seat' area cooling. Good luck anyway mate, looking forward to the before and after photos!!!!

Lisbonlegend Posted on 5/11 8:53
re: MS

Cheers mate, yeah I could definitely do with a bit of help from behind but the ride goes round in a loop so either way I'd be stuffed.

I'm not sure I'll have much energy for the after photos but I shall try!

re: MS

The sponsorship has now closed and a final total of 648 was raised for the Multiple Sclerosis society. Thanks to everyone that stumped up the cash to sponsor me.

Get in there.

Didnt know about this til just now LL, and have just sponsored you without reading to the last post, have to say that I must be the most unobservant person on here (must be the age-senility setting in) didn't notice the date, hopefully the donation will just go to MS, don't know how I missed it!!

Lisbonlegend Posted on 30/12 15:27
re: MS

Cheers Rozi, it's actually gone through so thankyou very much. The update should appear on the site.
