A Dr Who bitch about series 2 In the second series of the revamped Dr Who, The League of Gentlemen's Mark Gatis is penning a story set in the 1950s where the increase in ownership of tv sets is used by aliens as a means to invade. How exciting, well - not for one erstwhile friend of Gatis. Some years ago, before the League were famous and still hawking their act to Edinburgh, Gatis (himself a Dr Who anorak) was friends with an even sadder anorak, lets call him Stan. Anyway, Stan told Gatis of a great idea he had for a Dr Who story; it was set in the 50s and was all about how people were buying tv sets to watch the coronation and how aliens were using this mass medium to invade. After the League's success, Stan still kept in touch with Gatis so when he heard what his new script was about he gave him a call. Strangely, Gatis didn't have time to speak to Stan when he heard what the call was about and put the phone down. Stan then heard from Gatis' agent and the BBC. They told Stan that yes, there was a rudimentary similarity between the two idea but it was all a massive coincidence, apparently Russell T Davis himself had proposed the setting and idea to Gatis at a production meeting, but would Stan mind signing a contract waiving any claim to the concept? Alas, poor humble anoraky Stan was so excited to receive a communication direct from the BBC that he stupidly signed and took the measly £300 he was offered - what a twit. Naturally Gatis hasn't been in touch since. | |
