OUR HOLGATE END IN THE SKY

I woke up this morning thinking about the match tonight.
Then I had a thought about my relatives and friends who supported Boro but have sadly passed away.
Just above The Riverside there is a massive stand called The Holgate.
I am not too sure how many it holds but I know they have just completed filling in the corners to get more in.
People will be up there tonight waving their scarves and balloons and shouting the Boro on.
We won't hear them but we all know someone who is up there.

So if you are at the match tonight shout just a little louder for our relatives and friends up there.

IN OUR HOLGATE END IN THE SKY

COME ON BORO WE CAN DO IT.

BL, you got me there!!!

Sat here at work, filling up just thinking about it!!!

My dad passed away about 6 weeks ago - life long boro fan - he even gave me Hickton as a middle name

My old man always used to say "Typical Boro!" when describing a disappointment and I had thought to myself that it would be typical of the Boro to go and win a European trophy after he had gone BUT he will be watching tonite from above.

I will sing for both of us tonight

Nice one - I had similar thoughts at Cardiff, especially when you see pictures of the gap in the roof and the sunbeams comings in for the sky above, sort of old guys "getting a squeeze" through a turntile in the Sky.

I think a Boro qualification tonight should be also dedicated to the guy who didn't make it back from Amsterdam. I think he should have a spiritual word in the ear of fans on Teesside who think its too expensive to go tonight.

re: OUR HOLGATE END IN THE SKY

top thread BL

when we got to the zds final, my grandad wouldn't go. he had been a season ticket holder on the south terrace from age 6 in 1922 and had given up going when he came out after we played west ham one day and all the fences and dogs and treatment of the fans reminded him too much of what he'd seen after WW2. he knew there would be bother v chelsea at wembley, and we couldn't really tell him otherwise. as it was, on the way out, we saw an old lady pushed down the steps of wembley way going into the tube station by a load of boro trying to get at some chelsea over the fence in the car park. we picked her up and dusted her down, but our apologies weren't really enough. it would have broken our grandads heart to see it so our dad was glad he never went in the end.

by the time we got to the first league cup final, football was a friendlier game but the change came too late for our grandad, he had passed away, heartbroken at his wifes passing. he only lasted a couple of months longer than her. he always used to say to me, "i am a football fan, not a middlesbrough fan, because fan means fanatic, and i am not as fanatical about the boro as you" but he was always as excited as me when boro won.

when i went to that game against leicester, all i could think about was grandad as i went up wembley way with the fans being so friendly to each other. this was just the occasion him and all the boro fans who had gone before him were yearning for during their long years of support. the result would have mattered, but not as much as being there.

i had to split off from my mates, who i have followed the boro with all over the country and known in some cases since i was a bairn, because i knew i would cry for grandad and the fans like him who had passed away before such a great occasion as i went through the turnstile.

the same feeling followed me to cardiff, i, along with a lot of fans, knew it was going to be our day. i was crying or fighting back tears from the moment we scored our first, and by the time i left the ground i was spent, like most people i knew.

tonight was another highlight, an even higher high tide mark for my club. i can remember reading a book on european football as a kid and, as i would always do, i turned to the index to look to see if the boro were in the book. they were! one entry! we were in the long list of clubs who had finished in european qualifying positions in their league history. i was a walking, talking statto about the boro at this age so i knew only too well we had never graced the top european table with our presence, but look, there we were in 267th place out of 268!. then, i noticed the footnotes to the table, we were in because they included finishes in the top 3 even during years before there were no european competitions to qualify for , 1913-14 we finished 3rd

well tonight we properly re-wrote the book. a come back that exemplified teesside steel and determination, with no little style. semi-finalists in a uefa competition. grandad, and all those up there with him, would have been bursting with pride

re: A hoof from the heart! Please read the post..

I had always thought that people wanting "help from above" were a little bit desperate but last night something helped to create a phenomenal atmosphere and something helped us score 4 times in an hour in Cup QF

"our names on the cup" is another cliche but now it doesnt so ridiculous.

After celebrating Maccarone's goal, the first thing I thought of was my dad. I could imagine him shouting (as he always did) "Blow the f***ing whistle, ref!!!!" so I shouted it on his behalf

I think it would be a great idea to have the paragraph painted somewhere in the concourse for all to see.Maybe on the wall before you up to your seat.I think it could be insperational to the fans in a similar way that the liverpool badge is to the players before they run out.Maybe a bit of poetry around the ground with a bit of a competition. It would be a shame to lose these words as it seems to have made a lot of people remember a lot of people.

I'll be thinking about my mum who passed away 7 years ago. She was the first person to show me that it's fine for women to be interested in football, even though she always missed a goal when she had gone to the loo or to make a cup of tea and ALWAYS when things were looking dodgy for us, or there were a few minutes left for us to win the match, she'd leave her seat in the front room next to the tv or radio and go and pace around in the kitchen, jumping back into the living room when the whistle had gone.

I'd like to think that my mum would be pacing around the kitchen all tonight, and that she won't miss a single thing.

RIP Cathy.

Bloody hell.

My brother David died of a cancerous brain tumour the night we beat Spurs on the way to the Carling Cup.

I shared my sadness on this very forum and the wonderful fmttm people were a fantastic tonic . One commemt said let's go and win it for your brother , a comment that will live with me forever.

Let's hope we can dedicate a Uefa win to our loved ones on those sky terraces.

Grandad, my fav person in the world to talk to the Boro about. I used to give Beck some stick and when walking back from the riverside after one game popped in to see him in Pally Park. He looked me straigh in the eye after Beck had scored the winner and said who's Mickel Shyyyte now' - classic!

My father in law, the best man I have ever known. Died last November after battle with lung cancer - converted him to a Boro fan and prayed to him on Thursday night when my prayers were answered!

God bless you both! x

re: OUR HOLGATE END IN THE SKY

I'm sure the likes of Mannion, Clough, Maddren to name only a few were kicking every ball up there on Thursday with the rest of the Ayresome Angels...

Now lets win the final for them all, a lot of the 'old timers' never thought we'd ever win a cup, Boro just don't do that...we proved them wrong in Cardiff!

All aboard for Eindhoven - lets do it again!

re: OUR HOLGATE END IN THE SKY

What a brilliant thread.

My Grandad was a true Boro cynic, always bringing me back down to earth when i got a bit carried away. Not because he was a miserable get, just because he was battle weary from the countless false dawns he had seen over 70 years. He loved this club though, from the very bottom of his heart.

He died just before the 97' dramas, that would have added more fuel to the fire. He would have loved Cardiff though, that was the day he longed for.

Eindhoven, he'd never believe! I read this thread before the game and thought of him after the game, he'd have given his right arm to be Eindhoven. Hopefully he will be, following from above.

I lost my mother coming up two years now. I remeber phoning her on the way out of Cardiff she was crying her eyes out that the Boro had finally won a cup. She told me she had watched it with my dad and they were both in sheds of tears.

My dad still listens to Boro games but does not go anymore. he used to years ago but is one of the old buggers who always tell us " Boro always let you down son"

I still miss her so much and think of her every day. I am sure she is in the Holgate in the sky cheering us on and loving our recent adventures.

My dad left the Boro to come to Australia over 50 years ago,as a kid he would talk to me of the Boro with love and despair, love of town and the team, despair of his desire for a better life that meant leaving his home
His legacy was to leave me a lifelong love of the BORO and everything that is part of it, he taught me to understand the people of the north east, he taught me to value being Australian, he taught me the joy and value of being true to your past, no matter how hard the lows and how wonderful the high's
He will be in the Holgate in the sky tonight, he left to get his seat 15 years ago, everyday I miss him and thank him

re: OUR HOLGATE END IN THE SKY

I haven't really any close family who loved the Boro and have deceased, but I'll still say thank you to my Dad, who took me to that first game back in 1993, who got me hooked on something that no drug in the World come close to beating!
He gave his Season Ticket seat up in 2000, when we (as a Family) were really struggling financially and couldn't afford the prices every Year, he never really got back into the groove of it as he lost touch with his mates, but I carried on the baton and now I'm doing the same to my younger brother, teaching him the ways of Middlesbrough Football Club, I think he's getting the hang of it.

But I do have a story about a great Uncle that passed away about a Month ago. He was a big Boro fan and like many others lived to see the day Boro reach the dizzy heights we're at now! Anyway, whilst watching the Bucharest home leg, as soon as the fourth goal went in, my Great Aunty stood up and shouted "RAY WE'VE DONE IT!", then to her surprise the dog came running in as he heard my Great Uncle's name!

God bless the Boro fans who laid the foundations for what we have today, for inspiring your sons, daughters and grandchildren to follow the Boro through thick and thin, knowing that all them 1-0 defeats on a cold, wet, windy January afternoon are all made up by massive, euphoric occasions like tonight.

My Grandad, Norman Brakewell died on 28th March this year after falling outside the Boro ground at the Blackburn Carling Cup Game, he was 83 years old. He absolutely worshipped the Boro and everything about them and went to every single home game. Last year he even had to get a passport as he made it to the Graz game. I know he is watching as the day after his funeral we beat Basel 4-2 and I'm sure he had something to do with it.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a long banner hanging from the top of the North Stand saying "OUR HOLGATE END IN THE SKY" in memory of evey Boro fan that we have lost. I think it would be a lovely tribute and good to know that when our time is up, it serves in our memory too.

Or maybe add a bit on so it says "OUR HOLGATE END IN THE SKY - With Us In Spirit"

Just a thought.

re: OUR HOLGATE END IN THE SKY

This set of posts have probably been the most enjoyable and emotional ones that i have read since starting to view fmttm. They pretty much sum up the level of feelings and emotions that i went through on the day my father,Ben, died on the morning of the Carling Cup Semi-Final 2nd leg against Arsenal. He said on that very morning that he had a feeling "that we might just do it this year" and coming from a hard working, solid, teesside steelworker who cried at the ZDS final and Coca Ciola Cup final,it was a bold statement to say the least. My dad introduced me to mine and his beloved Boro and i will thank him for that until the day that i die.It was a great shame that he never got to see us win that first trophy but i am pretty sure, on that famous day, he will have been sat with a pint of his favourite bitter cheering the lads to victory. It was a dream of his to see us win some silverware and on the day he died my mum more or less forced me to go to the Arsenal game as my dad would not have wanted it any other way. I am certain that was what he would have wanted,at least one of us cheering the team on! I love and miss my old fella and always look at where we used to sit on matchdays.Sometimes i am almost convinced that he is still sat there watching!!!!
