Multiple Sclerosis

MS is thought to be an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS consists of the brain, spinal cord, and the optic nerves. Surrounding and protecting the nerve fibers of the CNS is a fatty tissue called myelin, which helps nerve fibers conduct electrical impulses. In MS, myelin is lost in multiple areas, leaving scar tissue called sclerosis. These damaged areas are also known as plaques or lesions. Sometimes the nerve fiber itself is damaged or broken. Myelin not only protects nerve fibers, but makes their job possible. When myelin or the nerve fiber is destroyed or damaged, the ability of the nerves to conduct electrical impulses to and from the brain is disrupted, and this produces the various symptoms of MS.

I did the coast to coast walk (St Bees to Robin Hoods Bay) last year for the MS Society - they are a great bunch of people.

All the best with your fund raising, I'll get on your site tonight when I have my credit card

re: Multiple Sclerosis

Lisbon, what have you put as an expected running time? I'm thinking 2 and a half hours. Going for a conservative estimate is the way, better to pass than be passed, you know?

By the way folks I'm, running for this good cause too. So keep your eyes pealed on the board and your wallets full for now.

Is there a minimum amount that one should be expecting to raise, for the form?

re: Multiple Sclerosis

I put 1 hour and 45 minutes, I think I'm on the start line with Kip Koech. Nah you don't need a special reason, I've cleared it with Sarah already.

grantus Posted on 26/6 14:45
re: Multiple Sclerosis

Doesn't the expected finishing time determine where in the pack you will start the race?

Lisbonlegend Posted on 26/6 14:46
re: Multiple Sclerosis

Yes, that's why I put 1 hour and 45mins. I don't want to be held back by having to jog past all the fatties.

grantus Posted on 26/6 14:56
re: Multiple Sclerosis

8 minute miles.

4 min 45 second kilometres.

That's not a bad pace, lisbon.

I'm careful not to put myself down for too fast a pace. It will be disheartening if those around me leave me and those behind me pass me.

I guess we wont be starting together then. I'll keep a lookout for you mush.

2 hours 15 for me.

Shut it chubby, if you set yourself a low target then that's what you'll achieve. Aim high and work your nuts off. I know you're nearly 50 but you can do it. You've got mail.

grantus Posted on 26/6 15:04
re: Multiple Sclerosis

You've got mail back. For me passing people is all the encouragement I need to spur me on. Being foolish and overestimating your capabilities leads to a premature end and a chat with St. Johns Ambulance.

Setting a target for the application and your real target after a Summer of training are two totally different things.

You've got a lot to learn boy.

re: Multiple Sclerosis

Half hour in the gym? It's hardly worth it. Bah, I'm going to have to move closer to work.

grantus Posted on 26/6 16:26
re: Multiple Sclerosis

I was doing about 10 kilomtres on the excercise bike in around 10 minutes last year. Broke 10 minutes after about 2 months.

Those ten minutes with ten minutes on the weights or 10 minutes on the cross trainer, so long as you are really pushing yourself, is definately worth it and you will begin to notice the improvements daily.

You do that everyday and you will be it tip top condition very quickly, then you can work on your stamina in a few months.

You dont need to be excercising for hours every day to get in shape. You need to push yourself.

It's 16 weeks away so I've got a little bit of time. If I start going to the gym tomorrow lunchtime and doing half an hour then I should have shed my puppyfat by week 6. Give it a rest and bring it back closer to the date lisbon. Give the odd update on your training, involve people, invite them into your odysey, let them share the experience with you until they are emotionally involved with your quest for glory. Use your lyrical panache and that deep respect for the english language of yours to keep people on tenderhooks for the next few months. Oh they love a good story do folk.

Then hit them in the wallet.

re: Multiple Sclerosis

Apols for the tardiness in response, LL, but I've had a physio sesh to endure earlier, as I'm currently in ortho post-op rehab.

In answer to your question --- quite serious, mate. In the not too distant past, I've done the Great North 4 times; 2 x self-propelled (for my own gratification!) and twice for charity with a pusher/bucket, for MFC Disabled Assoc to a) help raise the money for their adapted minibus and b) the money to keep it on the road.

We also hold an annual MS awareness day @ work, and with the help of the luvverly ladeez, have a "bake-in" (-- right up your street I'm reliably informed?? ) where they display the culinary expertise, and us guys show 'em how to sell (ie:buy/eat!!) the goodies.

Unfortunately, I don't think I'd recover enough fitness to attempt the course alone by late Oct, but I'd be more than willing to help in any way you thought appropriate.

re: Multiple Sclerosis

you can indeed cap although, I wont be hounding people for money all Summer like lisbon.

I'll leave it until near to race date and politely ask folk if they would like to sponsor me based on the Summer long training effort already put in.

Lisbon is asking for payment upfront, just like a pikey tradesman.

I'll wait until the work is almost complete, thus giving you a fair understanding that i'm sincere.

I'll have 50 on myself with those odds lisbon.

re: Multiple Sclerosis

Who's hounding? I've not asked anyone for anything? I hope people will sponsor us, for a good cause, but at the end of the day it's entirely up to them. All I can do is make them aware of what we're trying do and hope they want to help us. If that doesn't work then I've got names and addresses of all board members and a large axe.

50, You like throwing your money away don't you grantus, no wonder you're skint.

Good luck with the training and the run. Is it the old Portsmouth half marathon, as I did that myself a few (well 14) years ago.

Cheers LL, will try to remember that next time Tricks are great, today is my day off (only work 4 days now) so am about to walk the wolf over to the Riverside and pick up our tickets for Coops Charity Match. It's glorious weather again, maybe this will be the day I finally go pink in the sun, at the moment I am like a living, breathing dot to dot, the kids come out with pens to join up my freckles. Hope the training is going well, not long to go now.

My wife was diagnosed about 18 months ago. Even though I did voluntary work with MS sufferers when I was a student in the late 60s early 70s, I had no idea just what it entailed. You just wouldn't know unless you or a loved one was afflicted.

The Smoggybear

Lisbonlegend Posted on 28/7 11:09
re: Multiple Sclerosis

I started the training this week and it's not going great to be honest, I've got circulation problems in my calves and my back stiffened up aswell. I think it's going to be some serious cycling and when I'm up to full pelt I'll jump off my bike and start moving on my feet, that's the plan. Otherwise I'll have to crawl to the finish line I think.

I know smoggybear, I was only a kid when it affected me and it was not good at all.
