The guys argument about footy players using their heads in laughable! Isn't boxing a big sport in America? What must they all think about fighters getting punched in the head!

I've heard similar views from some people in this country (usually women*). "What's the point of football? It's only 22 men running around and not doing a lot, etc, etc." People who don't understand, or don't want to understand, football generally make the same comments. It's not restricted to the US. * I'm female, by the way.

Feedback left ... "U.S. Isn’t Exactly World Cup-Crazy" Typical tunnel vision comment from an American who doesn't understand, and refuses to open his mind, on a sport which ranks higher than any other in popularity. Mr.Cannon and Mr.Lester can hold onto their peanuts, and watch that drivel they call baseball. They can peer at their TV screens at a Rugby based sport called Football, which is actually interupted by advertisements ..? Americans haven't got the patience to accept a sport that can end in a 0-0 draw, they must have their four quarters of basketball, where the ball bounces around for a couple of hours, and the score is 98-99 ... ! Total codswallop !! Thank you Ned

Correct me if I am wrong here but there version of football (thaty hardly kick the odd shaped ball at all) has something like 99 subsitutes to throw a ball fowrard and they have four goes at this to try and get four yards. I know which game I'd rather play and spectate at!!!! Idiots the lot of them! sorry that should be 10 yards but whats the differance --- Post edited by mclarens_red_nose on 29/6 15:00 ---

Agree with a lot of what Ned said, but I do find that the Americans I am encountering are actually into the World Cup (maybe because some are sharing a corridor with me, I don't know). Despite this, I still get the surprised comment "What do you mean Costa Rica didn't qualify for the 2nd round ...". The one funny thing I found about the article is when I was reading it, my brain swapped "Jackson Pollock" for "Jamie Pollock". Not a bad idea, I think Jamie could do a better job than Jackson ...

"Soccer is the perfect game for the post-modern world. It's the quintessential expression of the nihilism that prevails in many cultures". That means "you Europeans, you Latins, you crazy goddamn foriegners from Englandtown who have not submitted to the cultural might of Uncle Sam and gridiron, you all have no morality, no purpose. You suck."

Yanks can't watch a sport where there isn't adequate breaks for them to shovel shitt down their throats constantly, football requires far too much concentration to allow that.

| re: Ho, ho, those wacky yanks and their 'soccer' | |
It is tongue in cheek, also a bit of sour grapes as CBS don't have the rights to show it. The yanks in my office here are enjoying the world cup. They're watching the games over the internet and getting pretty excited, even though they're learning what it's all about. One hasn't got the hang of stoppage time yet, and insists on calling it 'mystery time' once the clock goes past 45 minutes.

so the real reason is behind this artical is? That americans are shyite at football and bitter for this. but they can be proud of there imports to the sports like the great coby jones haha. They are just bitter that as usual the rest of the world is better then them at the real football as they didnt invent the sport.

I love the way on the US commentary they fawn over Eric Wynalda. When they talk in the commentary about great goalscorers such as Ronaldo, they then say "of course, Eric Wynalda would know all about that ...". Sometimes, watching it, you get to piss yourself laughing which can be a good thing at times ....

NorthDownSouth that bit about "mystery time" made me laugh out loud. That article really is a load of crap because every arguement they make can be fired straight back at them about american sports
| zaphod Posted on 29/6 16:56 | |
| re: Ho, ho, those wacky yanks and their 'socc | |
The US not liking football is their problem, not ours. Just think what they're missing out on. Mind you, if you concentrate on games no-one else takes seriously, then you'll always be World Champions! Though I believe Lithuania are big in basketball.

The Americans will never be interested in a sport in which they can't automatically beat everybody, or guarantee an American winner (e.g. "World" series)
| swordtrombonefish Posted on 29/6 17:44 | |
| re: Ho, ho, those wacky yanks and their 'socc | |
Let's face it. Football simply does not have sufficient numbers in it to be interesting to the yanks. - Only one team per side. - Single figure statistics - No rushing yardage. They'll always be blind to the beautiful game.
| baghdadboro Posted on 29/6 18:20 | |
| re: Ho, ho, those wacky yanks and their 'soccer' | |
'Soccer denies its players this most basic human ability.' This comment summed it up for me, the fact football goes against the basics means there is an above average ability involved that yanks just can't grasp... any fool can pick up an object and run with it, but to move yourself and an object with your feet takes some degree of skill. And, coupled with everything else that sets football apart from gridiron it over complicates things more than the simple 'black and white' most yanks only understand.
| EmersonsPerm Posted on 29/6 18:23 | |
| re: Ho, ho, those wacky yanks and their 'soccer' | |
The American version of football can't be played by everyone either. You've got to be a big meathead to play the game. Whereas the real football is open to people regardless of their size.

Chill kids, WC has been a huge success here stateside, this article is just poking fun and pandering to the newly underserved luddite isolationists. This is the first negative word ive read about it amongst articles all over newsweek, sports illustrated, cnn, espn, today show etc etc etc whenever something gets this much positive coverage its only a matter of time before someone goes the other way. I did enjoy my housemate's girlfriend's mum bemusedly asking why the clock goes up not down and, with some justification, claiming that stoppage time is just made up by the ref on a whim.

"I did enjoy my housemate's girlfriend's mum bemusedly asking why the clock goes up not down and, with some justification, claiming that stoppage time is just made up by the ref on a whim." I sometimes think it's a whim as well. Rennie adding only 2 minutes on at home to Blackburn last season was beyond belief considering that the first 10 mins of the second half was taken up by physios rushing on and off. I think no one made a fuss as we were happy to be put out of our misery. "mystery time" He he, great stuff.

oh dear , more reverse cultural snobbery - why are bothered whether Americans like football or not ? ( and it was called soccer in the UK long before the US ) . Get stressed about US foreign policy and the like but whether they like footy or not? I really don't see many Americans caring about who likes the NFL ..
