Ian was the manager ? I do remember the DJ When me and my mate privately booked The Rock Garden in 1978 for a private doo, we got The Angelic Upstarts to play, with Monitor supporting (remember them?) I dj'd that night All I remember was the DJ had his collection locked up under the decks. He wouldn't let me use his records, I had to bring all my own in.

Geoff had the best reggae collection on Teesside in 1978, and he introduced me to the delights of Bunny Wailer, Culture, and The Mighty Diamonds.

I've got 2 Breaking Point singles and one Let's Go but it's got a different cover bag to that one on eBay. I thought the DJ worked at Fearnleys. He always had singles before they were officially realeased and it used to be a race to try and get one before he did. He looked like that Christ on a bike gadge who sold the records in the Linny I beat him to UB40s 1st single mind. I got it on white label preordered by the two dykes who worked at Hamiltons, when it was up by the bus station. He was well impressed. A few weeks later they were playing and I nashed off on tour with them. I put him on to a few bands as well but he introduced me to a damn sight more. It was him that used to tell Ian which bands to book, judging by how ape we went on the fight-floor (sic).

That's them Later on, they put on an indie night at Masters?? - the old Masonic temple near the original Star and Garter. It was called Cyclops because of the big Masonic eye above the main entrance.

Yeah that's the one. How much does Necrophilia by the Space Frogs go for? I remember John Peel being interviewed on the telly and he threw a load of singles onto his desk; explaining that he receives loads every week and that some are not fit for Radio. The Space Frogs single was top of the pile

Wow! Sorry I didn't reply straight away but I've been out of town on business. My son rang me last night to tell me. Thing is, this copy was absolutely mint condition, I'm afraid to say the 3-4 copies I have are sort of "very good" condition, seeing as I used to throw them around dj'ing at the Rock Garden. I will be letting Record Collector know about this, as they have it valued at only £60 or so. I must say I am still gobsmacked. Someone was asking about Geoff Fogarty, last I heard (about 2 years ago) he was in Australia (or New Zealand) working as a photographer. My feelings about Geoff are mixed, firstly he was responsible for Basczax splitting up (they re-formed for a while) and he also was indirectly responsible for me resigning my job at HMV in Stockton (long, long story). However I am rather thankful that I did leave, as after many twists and turns job-wise, I now have a great job that I love - karma and all that.

Just out of interest lads, who was the owner of the Rock Garden when you were frequenting the place ? Mrs Jumpers dad used to own it at some point, although I'm not sure it was at the exact same time, although he does tell some stories about "the punks".

| re: FAO Fastcakes | |
I never actually saw the deeds but everyone reckoned that Ian Lister was the boss early on. Later on Don Laroche took it over as punk had ran it's course (from UK Decay onwards I think) and it all went down hill. PS. I've got some great photos of Geoff on a day trip to Whitby. --- Post edited by Cogeur_le_Conq on 25/7 19:01 ---

I think Mrs Jumpers Dad may have been the boss, but had Ian Lister as manager, at least that's what he says.

| re: FAO Fastcakes | |
Ian Lister was the boss when I was gigging there (1977-79), whether he was the actual owner I cannot confirm, but he certainly booked the bands. I remember I was sat in his office when he took a call from Malcolm McLaren booking the Pistols for the "Spots" tour.

Just to thank Stevie T for handing over the Basczax tape this aftie. I can confirm that all 9 previously unknown tracks have been digitally remastered and sound (almost) spiffing. They will be seriously considered for inclusion on the Basczax CD "The Eyeliner Years (1978-80)" due for a US release sometime in the next 10 years.

the owner (must have been before Don) was a great big guy an ex docker, ..just forgot his name...it'll come to me (senile old basstard that i am!).. his son started going around 1979 ginger haired lad from linthorpe (and a boro fan).....i'm sure his been on here talking about the rocky on one of the other threads.... i remember Jeff and Mick well from bascax..hadnt they both been to sea ?, before coming back to Teesside, always though jeff fogarty had an eye for adventure, he sure had the gift of the gab and i thought he was entertaining... i shared a few taxis back to Guisborough with him..

| re: FAO Fastcakes | |
I'm fairly sure Mick has been at British Steel all his working life, but he may have had a spell at sea straight from school. He posts on here I think so maybe he'll chip in. Jeff was always a bit of a character, there was no shortage of arguments between band members, and Jeff was often at the start of it, he was a bit nearer "the edge" than the rest of us, if you know what I mean. As for the Roxy Music tag, it is fair to say that the band rather liked Roxy, but I think the press often used them as short-hand to describe our sound. Sav's big hero was Marc Bolan, and to a lesser extent Bowie. Mick was into punk, Deaf School and Bowie. I always thought that we sounded like John Foxx-era Ultravox!, whose first three albums, Ultravox!, Ha Ha Ha, and Systems Of Romance, must rank as one of the best debut-trilogy album type thingy ever.

| re: FAO Fastcakes | |
Everybody seems to forget about 'that' Ultravox don't they? Loved Basczax, though I did think the name worked against them a little, they were a little more sophisticated than much of what was going on at the time. It's good to hear that the old records are selling well to collectors, I'll have to dig out my old singles and tapes and reminisce about the 'good old days'. Good times from about '76 through to about '80/'81, learnt a lot from the people who used to be around the local music scene. Lost touch with everyone though, which is quite a shame. My best pal did her teacher training with Sav, she wasn't too sure how he would cope with teaching though. I do know he went to London to work after he qualified, but I think he planned to go abroard to maybe teach English as a second language. So, what are you doing for a living Fastcakes, you're obviously still as enthusiastic as ever about music? Anything happening there? I do remember way back in the mists of time wandering the fields at the back of Blackwells farm to the enless rehearsing of the Alex Harvey Bands version of 'Delilah'. Pre. Blitzkreig Bop I take it, 1975/76 maybe?

John's right, Mick still is at Corus, he works at the Ore Terminal. (I think he's a Team Leader there) I watched Basczax reherse for months, when they were at the Gables. Even stood in as Sav's mike stand on one of two occasions.

| re: FAO Fastcakes | |
Dr Buck: Blooming heck! Delilah! Yeah, that was Adamanta Chubb (the pre-Bop band that mutated into the punky thing), we rehearsed Delilah around August 1975 - we were attempting shorter "poppier" songs after trying and failing to master stuff like "Supper's Ready" (Genesis) I make a living selling cookware to department stores, I do about 40,000 miles a year but the money is good and I get a new car every 2 years so, can't complain. Musically, the last gig I did was the Blitzkrieg Bop re-union show at The Cornerhouse in 1999, but I have a pretty decent home studio set up now and I am even trying to learn guitar. I released an online album ealier this year as The Fast Cakes (natch) called "The Siege Of The Mad March Heir"(link below) and from that link I have separate pages for each band, Basczax, Makaton Chat etc. I will upload a rehearsal of "Delilah" to the Adamanta Chubb page tonight, so you can wallow in the nostalgia... I also have almost finished a site dedicated to Blitzkrieg Bop (www.blitzkriegbop.info) which is soon come...

It's good to hear you're doing well, sounds as if you're happy. Can't wish for much more these days I suppose. I always had the feeling that the Teesside music scene in those days was just about to 'happen', like the Liverpool and Manchester scenes. There were some great bands around, as well as great people.
