Execution of a Teenage Girl Thu 27 Jul, 9:00 pm - 9:50 pm 50mins On August 15th, 2004 a 16-year-old girl was hanged in a public square in Neka, Iran, a small industrial town by the Caspian Sea. Her death sentence was for crimes against chastity. Her name was Atefah Sahaaleh. The only evidence against Atefah was her own forced confession. Atefah railed against her judge in court for its unfairness, but this was her undoing. Judge Haji Rezai, who was also the local mullah, prosecutor and head of the city administration, personally obtained permission from Iran's Supreme Court to execute her, and put the noose around her neck himself before she was hoisted on a crane jib arm to her death. Using undercover footage, eyewitness accounts and drama recontruction, this film tells an unforgettable story of the life and tragic death of an ordinary teenage girl under Iran's mullahs. This programme contains some scenes which some viewers may find upsetting. | |

Shocking that was. See the clips at the end where it said a girl ages 13 was sentenced to death but after appeal had it "reduced" to life. No doubt life over there means life. 13 year old? it's appauling. | |

I missed it, but I've heard horrendous things about what happens over there. The general population is apparently one of the largest and highest educated in the whole region, but the government are "motherf**kers" to quote a friend of mine. One young lad from over there has told me many times that dancing is outlawed back home. | |

I missed tonight's programme too, but I remember an episode of Dispatches a couple of years ago that was about the murder of a journalist who was trying to cover student democracy protests in Teheran. International coverage of it was impossible because they basically forced journalists away with violence. One Canadian journalist who did make it through to take some photographs of the demonstrations was tortured for three days and beaten to death. The woman doing the documentary also had lots of problems just getting about without constantly being stopped. They showed people being stoned to death too, truly shocking. | |

PEFB - i agree with population control totally. We are 60 million on one small island. Quality of life and environment suffer with a greater human footprint. What bugs me is that we have the terminally unemployed and benefit ghettoes that are now accepted and we have some labour shortages met with eastern european workers. Its like that reporter who visited Iraq after the first Gulf War and couldnt believe the changes in attitude towards women. She had visited Iraq on a few occasions prior to the Gulf War starting and noticed how the women all walked 10 paces behind their husbands with their heads down. This was the thing that struck her most on her visit after the war as women were allowed now to walk 10 paces in front of their husbands with their heads held high. During an interview with one of the women of Iraq she asked her what she thought was the most significant thing from the war that contributed to the menfolks new attitude towards women. I can think of many toerags in this country who deserve stoning,rather than pampering them with jaunts here there and everywhere.It is sad that this happened to a young girl but if we had tougher sentancing then maybe we could have a better quality of life and our Mothers,Sisters or for that matter males could walk the streets at any time without the fear of being mugged or worse by some drugged up toerag or worse someone just doing it for kicks,knowing that even if caught they`ll get off with a caution. | |

I think most people have missed the point here. A 16 year old girl was hung because she was raped. The man that did this to her was given 80 lashes. In court they(the prosecutors) required no proof of her age(you have to be 18 to be executed)the judge looked at her body and decieded she must be about 22 so that she could be put to death. There was no evidence of her having sex with this man, her confession that HE raped her was beaten out of her. Her parents weren't told she was being executed, when they went to see the judge to appeal they were told he was on holiday, he was actually on the way to the execution of their daughter. Just before she was hung she was told by a prosecutor, please forgive us we have to do this to scare people. | |

You never see the other side of other people's arguments even if they are stronger than yours. yes it is possible to be treated as a second class citizen in a muslim country. I have had that experience and can tell you it isnt pleasant. To give a simple example i was waiting for a plane and there were too many passengers we were then told that muslims have first choice for the seats and only when they were filled would they let non muslims on. A bit like aparthied really isnt it. Oh well at least it let me feel what blacks, asians, muslims go through in this country. | |
