| The Cruel Sea... Penlee Disaster....... | |
Just watched a fascinating documentary about this event which happened 25 years ago. A programme that would bring a lump to the throat of even the most hardened person. Brings it home to you how brave and unselfish lifeboat personnel are and how unpredictable the sea is. Makes you feel very humbled.

Bloody right erimus. Someone once said to a lifeboat Coxswain as the boat was about to launch on a "shout" into a hurricane, that they might not come back. He replied, "We don't have to come back - but we do have to go out". Selflessness and bravery does not come any bigger than that. Humbling indeed.

Absolutely. A lot of things are taken for granted in this life, none more so than these fine lads. I have no shame in admitting that it's something I simply couldn't do.

Visit this website people (see link). And next time you're passing Redcar lifeboathouse or any other lifeboathouse for that matter, drop a couple of quid in the collecting box - it costs over £100 million a year to ru the RNLI and they rely totally on voluntary contributions from the great British public for everything.

Was at sea in the Merchant Navy for 14 years as a deck officer. Believe you me when the sea is a deep shade of green and is towering above you it's awesome. You have to experience it to understand just how helpless and insignificant we are when pitted against the elements at their wildest. Even on the big ships you just 'heave to', ride it out and hope for the best. We did our best to avoid the really serious weather, the lifeboat guys launch knowingly into it. Total respect and admiration
