The girls at work

They don't seem to realise that they are here to WORK. All they seem to do is talk endlessly all day long. And what they say is totally inane. For example I heard one of them saying that she thought that the Sun turned into the Moon on a night!

re: The girls at work

I hope you don't think I was having a go at women working SouthernS. It's the fact that I can't concentrate for their insane chatter and that they seem to be able to get away with doing it all day. I know what would happen if I sat and chatted instaed of working. There's something that just occurred to me. Why is it that the management notice me not working and don't appear to notice them not working?

re: The girls at work

Here's a novel idea Dr Beak.....you're smart enough to have secured a job - you exercise vocabulary well here..........

Why don't you just speak to the individuals in question politely requesting they might want to take their conversation elsewhere?

parmos_r_us Posted on 8/8 10:32
re: The girls at work

That would be a mistake, as they well no doubt take the hump. And it would make you look like an arselicker.

SouthernSmogette Posted on 8/8 10:35
re: The girls at work

Well....god forbid you should be seen to be an ar$e licker egh?

Personally I couldn't give a cra* which is why I will eventually reach my goal of world domination. The mutterings of two bit colleagues who I will probably no longer know in as many years matter not to me.

Seriously.....

KENDAL Posted on 8/8 10:35
re: The girls at work

I used to work with a girl that when she used to come up to me to talk she would brush her boobs against my arm on purpose and then smile in that certain way. Now I didn't mind at all but I wonder what would happen if the roles were reversed and I pushed my groin against her, all hell would break loose.

parmos_r_us Posted on 8/8 10:37
re: The girls at work

Good luck SS.

I work to live though. Not live to work, so probs wouldn't take it as seriously as some.

DrBuck Posted on 8/8 10:37
re: The girls at work

Don't you think I've tried that? They then choose to ignore me, or seem to take it on board then forget about it 20 minutes later. Or they become really confrontational, as if I am being unreasonable. Am I? How is it that a lot of people, these days, seem to take offence when you are giving them advice or trying to help them?

SouthernSmogette Posted on 8/8 10:38
re: The girls at work

Kendal - whilst anybody and their contribution is welcome -this isn't a discussion about sexual harassment in the workplace, that is unless girls banging on in an utterly inane manner about moons being suns turns you on???

I suppose it takes all sorts :o)

KENDAL Posted on 8/8 10:41

SouthernSmogette Posted on 8/8 10:42
re: The girls at work

People are always on the offensive I agree......

Not sure I can suggest anything else then other than speaking to the powers that be if it really disturbs you that much fella.

Or....try the very grown up idea of fingers in ears whilst loudly screetching - LALALALALALALALALALA......???

parmos_r_us Posted on 8/8 10:42
re: The girls at work

Confrontation isn't good

Its true that sometimes no matter how polite you are in putting a point forward, someone can take it the wrong way. Then its grief i tells ya.

re: The girls at work

"Now I didn't mind at all but I wonder what would happen if the roles were reversed and I pushed my groin against her, all hell would break loose"

Kendal - I'm first to admit defeat - but is the above common practise where you work? Here....and I conceed I work in the very PC public sector - that's deemed as sexual harassment, which in turn is a very different conversation to that of two individuals annoying Dr Beak because of their chatterings.

DrBuck Posted on 8/8 10:48
re: The girls at work

Broughton, why do you assume I'm at work?

Parmo, what has attractiveness got to do with it?

KENDAL Posted on 8/8 10:49
re: The girls at work

As long as their work schedule was on target I wouldn't be bothered how much they talked.

parmos_r_us Posted on 8/8 10:51
re: The girls at work

You asked why they get away with it and you don't.

I worked one place where the girls were left to do what they wanted and seldom got blamed for their mistakes, the lads did not get off so easilly.

Mind you, the boss was a dirty old man.

Speak to your manager, tell him that you cannot work with the inane bablings of witless females with their vapid conversation. Ask if you can wear ear defenders or some such device that will allow you to work in peace.

If your boss is also a female, shoot yourself.

SouthernSmogette Posted on 8/8 11:47
re: The girls at work

Crikey O'Reilly.......

He didn't say they were witless. Jaysus - sorry I got involved now. Oh I'd have them sacked with immediate effect.

zoec Posted on 8/8 11:48

To be fair, one of them thinking the sun changed into the moon does imply a fair degree of witlessness.

As a manager I hesitate to employ female's as they are a pain in the arse for 3 weeks and a possesed lunatic for the other week.

Marlon_D - stop vying for a bite up or I'll tell your Mam next time I'm home - you should know better a house full of females!

I wouldn't be bothered unless it increased my work load. Push your groin up against them, it worked for me...
only after hours though!

SouthernSmogette Posted on 8/8 12:25
re: The girls at work

Marlon_D - that's sad that you have had an experience to drive you to that conclusion. My department is mixed very equally and there are a couple of people here who could gossip for England - one male, one female. Beyond that there's a real hard work ethic (despite my posts on here....) I must be one of the lucky ones. To be fair, if anyone distracts me - I tell them, nobody has appeared upset by it yet....

re: The girls at work

The office manager is female too and is afraid of the younger girls. When there was a complaint against a new girl she got another of the girls to 'have a word with her'. What the hell is wrong with people?

KENDAL Posted on 8/8 12:50
re: The girls at work

I would hazard a guess that she is an unqualified manager with little HR experience and definatly no HR qualifications.

SouthernSmogette Posted on 8/8 12:58
re: The girls at work

Horrible situation.

Had a thought about it - can you wear an ipod?

DrBuck Posted on 8/8 13:07
re: The girls at work

Kendal. I can confirm that you are correct. No-one within our company has any qualifications! And the person I'm talking about is also a director of the company.

By the way, what 'qualifications' would you expect people running a company to have?

KENDAL Posted on 8/8 13:11
re: The girls at work

I would expect an Office Manager to be at least CIPD qualified.

DrBuck Posted on 8/8 13:12
re: The girls at work

And what does CIPD mean and consist of?

SouthernSmogette Posted on 8/8 13:14
re: The girls at work

CIPD courses and all other HR related qualifications mean nowt!

The issues you're talking about are not the form filling employment law pure rubbish - it's about people management. That's not a skill easily learnt it's something you naturally have or take a long time to evolve.

The biggest lesson I have learnt so far in my career (beyond don't sleep with a colleague) is to manage your manager......

Think about it my friends

KENDAL Posted on 8/8 13:16
re: The girls at work

It's a qualification based on Human Resources which as you know is a broad subject but I don't know exactly. Neverless how can you be a manager without being qualified.

SouthernSmogette Posted on 8/8 13:20
re: The girls at work

Kendal - easily....

I have no management qualifications and run a team. My qualifications are in the specific area I chose as a career which allows me to do my actual job.

I may hasten to add we are a very efficient team!

DrBuck Posted on 8/8 13:20
re: The girls at work

Nice one Smogette, but these girls are not managing their 'manager' they are taking the pish. She knows it and doesn't have a clue how to handle it. She is a company director and uses that as a weapon to hit people with. 'After all I am a director of the company' is quite often heard throughout my working day.

KENDAL Posted on 8/8 13:24
re: The girls at work

SS, I don't doubt a word you say but all the managerial careers my wife has looked at have asked for CIPD as the minimal requirement which would lead you to beleive that it must be a worthwhile thing to have.

SouthernSmogette Posted on 8/8 13:28
re: The girls at work

Kendal - does your wife work specifically within HR? To be fair I don't - I'm a fluffy marketing smogette :o)

DrBeak - what about you managing your manager? Managing what expectations she should have for the office?? Suggestion and allowing to be taken on as their own idea....perfect!

DrBuck Posted on 8/8 13:33
re: The girls at work

Southern S, first of all she is not my manager and secondly I am Dr Buck.

KENDAL Posted on 8/8 13:33
re: The girls at work

No, not just HR but a whole spectrum of business areas such as recruitment, payroll, employment law and loads of other bits that I have difficulty in understanding, so I don't go there.

SouthernSmogette Posted on 8/8 13:37
re: The girls at work

Dr Buck - sorry - pi$$ing myself laughing here. Apologies.....Dr Beaks is a chicken place in Reading :o)

You should easily be able to manage her standards and expectations.....easier that she's not YOUR manager but A manager

DrBuck Posted on 8/8 13:50
re: The girls at work

When I come to think of it I've probably had more management training than anyone within the company! However I was employed by a friend who runs the company and I don't no-one is aware of my previous experience and nobody has taken the time to ask me.

So I sit here thinking how things should be and moaning about it.

SouthernSmogette Posted on 8/8 13:56
re: The girls at work

Self publicity is the only way forward for you my love.......

....that or a new job?

Hey I'll be your campaign manager

BoroandProud Posted on 8/8 13:57
re: The girls at work

Just make sure they know you wont put up with any s**t, without getting sacked of course. If they think they can take the piss, then they probably will. Don't forget you're only there to pick up a wage, who gives a toss how you get it. Are there any promotion opportunities in the company you're in?

DrBuck Posted on 8/8 14:17
re: The girls at work

No opportunities whatsoever. In fact I've just recently been 'promoted', however I was also told that the company couldn't afford to increase my salary. This in spite of the promise of a rise after my trial period.

KENDAL Posted on 8/8 14:21
re: The girls at work

B+P. "You're only there to pick up the wage, who gives a toss how you get it".
That suggests to me that your personnel development skills need a little tweaking.

DrBuck Posted on 8/8 15:21
re: The girls at work

Superbok, going by some of their conversations I doubt that they wear any knickers.

BoroandProud Posted on 8/8 15:31
re: The girls at work

Well Kendal, it's ok having a bit of pride in your job. What gets to be a bit of a pain however, is when you appear to be the only one who does in your workforce. Especially when there are little, or no promotion opportunities. I was in the same boat as DrBuck at one stage, i got 'promoted' but recieved hardly anything for it. Your motivation takes a bit of a knock believe me. I was lucky in that i was well liked, people would usually come to me for advice, and nobody would take the piss with me on shift on the whole.
I think the trick is to be nice, but to be quite honest also, and be straight with people if you're not happy. Just get the balls to tell them to do something if it's not getting done. If you feel left out, get involved and have a bit of craic. Hard with women, i know, but i managed it ok.

KENDAL Posted on 8/8 15:36
re: The girls at work

B+P. I understand your predicament because I was in a similar position many years ago.

SouthernSmogette Posted on 8/8 15:37
re: The girls at work

I'm not at all being defensive here - but I think men generally build up a fear factor with women. You wind yourselves up....
This thread is a fine example of that. Dr Buck sounds like he does work with a bunch of jobsworths - but that sounds like company ethos. Effectively he probably stands head and shoulders above them in capability.
I think being straight with people is the only answer. If it effects your day so much that you're on a football forum discussing it with randoms???

BoroandProud Posted on 8/8 15:41
re: The girls at work

Kendal - I'm lucky now that i'm certainly not in that position anymore. I loved the job i was in, but used to be told quite regularly that i had great potential to get out and do well in life. I just couldn't see how it was going to happen and was stuck in a bit of a routine.
Now an opportunity has presented itself, and i'm thanking my lucky stars because what i'm going into has been an ambition of mine for a long time. I think it's kind of like a reward for my hard work.

re: The girls at work

SS - Most of my collegues were girls. It takes some getting used to at first, but some of the best craic i had was with them, rather than some of the lads we employed. I still go out for drinks with the majority of them, and keep in touch regularly. It didn't mean discussing nail varnish and stuff like that neither. Smile and the world smiles with you, and all that....

re: The girls at work

I've had the good fotune to work with women most of my working life. It's just that these particular ones don't seem to realise that we are there to do a job, which seems to be a rather incidental reason for them to be there.

Oh, and one of them has been caught using the company postal system to send porn to her boyfriend in prison. I wonder what the consequences will be?

BoroandProud Posted on 8/8 16:06
re: The girls at work

All else failing, just kick off in a massive way. Lay a brown trout on the photocopier, shoot stapels at fellow employees and laugh manically as you run off coffee from the drinks machine without actually having a plastic cup there to catch the liquid. That'll learn the (unts.

BoroandProud Posted on 8/8 16:16
re: The girls at work

Seriously though, i'd say something otherwise nothing will get done. Why not look for another job and just keep that one until an opportunity pops up? It's up to you. By the sounds of that, i think i'd have lost my temper quite a while ago to be honest.

DrBuck Posted on 8/8 16:26
re: The girls at work

The jobs not bad actually, even though the pay is laughable. I think I'm at a point where I'm quite content with my lot. Little things like this irritate me sometimes.
