Rock Garden gig list

There was a thread here a few weeks ago where someone provided a list of gigs that were held at the Middlesbrough Rock Garden - I promised I would dig out my list to compare - can whoever posted it repeat please?

DrBuck Posted on 8/8 22:57
re: Rock Garden gig list

I remember it needed quite a bit of revision. Either that or I've lost a few bets and arguments over the years.

Do an FAO Cogga.

I've got it at work so if he doesn't reply I'll stick it up tomorrow.

Amazing the number of great bands that played there in such a short time. I knew about all the Punk gigs but not about the likes of Maiden and The Cure.

re: Rock Garden gig list (fao Cogga)

THere are bands I remember seeing that are not on that list. Off the top of my head the Thompson Twins, ATV, Sector 27, Crispy Ambulance, a different version of Spizz, Deutsche Amerikan Freundschaft, a band with Glenn Matlock in (Rich Kids?) a few more maybe. Its all a bit a hazy now.

re: Rock Garden gig list (fao Cogga)

I remember seeing The Lurkers/the Vibrators same night and Spizzles and Department S on the same night. Then again that might of been when it was called the cavern.

Both list are incomplete - there were loads more, guess we'll never have factual dates but I could certainly list a few more names...New Order for one - enjoy!!

Great thread, the gig listing is superb...didnt know the Dead Kennedys came to Boro ! Any witnesses?

Borosown - i was at the Lurkers/ Vibrators gig - it was the Cavern period 19/2/83. One of the very last shows, if not thee last before fire closed it down. Both recently reformed, Vibrators with original line up were awesome, Lurkers were drunk n rubbish.
Caught up with Lurkers again in Amsterdam 1990 and filmed them..

re: Rock Garden gig list (fao Cogga)

I'll have a look at that lurkers clip when I get back from work.
Craig I received a brilliant tape off you years ago, Husker du or die I think it was called. Just wish I could find it again.
Did anyone see Andy X's band Plan of Action there.

re: Rock Garden gig list (fao Cogga)

What I suggest is that if anyone has VERIFIABLE missing gigs then post them up, and then I can compile all the information and post a "complete" list.

Gaz2605 Posted on 9/8 13:57
re: Rock Garden gig list

If you can keep this hoofed to a couple of days i'll try and dig out my list. Was asked by the last owner of the building to compile a comprehensive list, but it never got finished.

If anyone has any dates from the Britpop Cactus nights then please add them either here or another thread. When you think of the bands that have played that building in the last few decades it becomes scary.

re: Rock Garden gig list

I saw the Doctors of Madness play the Rock Garden twice. On neither time were Penetration on the same bill.

Also saw Rose Tattoo play there, and Dire Straits.

I saw loads of other bands, I'll try and rack my brains for anything not mentioned yet.

Funtime_Franckie Posted on 9/8 14:41
re: Rock Garden gig list

I saw the Fall there in 1979. Remember a gang of skinheads being there hitting anything that moved. Think Penetration supported them cos can remember Pauline Murray being in the crowd during the Fall.

The skinheads were going up to everyone asking where they were from, and if the didn't like the place they nutted them. I was only 15 so when they came up to me I was expecting a right kicking. When they asked me where I was from I replied South Bank. They just nodded at me and moved onto the bloke next to me and nutted him. Phew

Think Athletico Spizz 80 were supported by the Pinkies who were really Altered Images.

Also saw the Blue Orchids there in 1980 I think. For those who don't know them, they were a band created by Martin Bramah when he left the Fall.

Also saw the Gang of Four at The Coatham Bowl and The Cure at the Town Hall the night before 1 of my "O" levels. I failed it

re: Rock Garden gig list

Funtime:

Are you SURE that the Pinkies were Altered Images?

All biographies fail to mention an earlier name, and there was a band called The Pinkees who surfaced in 1982 with a couple of singles, after the Images were established.

I`ve got folders full of ticket stubbs and flyers from around 1989 through to about 1995 at home. I`d be happy to put a list up of the bands that were on. Is this just for general info, or is someone putting together an article or book or something?

Also, whats happening with the building now? Last time i drove past it was for sale. Such a shame it`s not hosting gigs now......

Funtime_Franckie Posted on 9/8 16:26
re: Rock Garden gig list

All those punk bands then Tori Amos.

Have you mellowed out Craig

I went to:

Rock Garden
The Fall
Athletico Spizz 80
Blue Orchids
Punishment of Luxury
Fire Engines
Penetration
Comsat Angels

Teesside Poly
John Cooper Clarke

Town Hall
The Cure

Town Hall Crypt
Crass
Poison Girls (they were terrible)

Gaskins
Theatre of Hate

Coatham Bowl
Gang of Four

And a few more I can't remember

craig_pancrack Posted on 9/8 16:36
re: Rock Garden gig list

Frankie...Comsat Angels were a great band, should have been much bigger...as for mellowing out, erm, not really...I wanted to go to the Rock Garden form the age of 10 and soon as i was old enough it closed down! Gigs happened elsewhere...and hitch-hiking was often the mode of transport...AMEBIX/ANTISECT/SUBHUMANS/BLACK FLAG/BAD BRAINS/DOA/FLUX OF PINK INDIANS/TOXIC REASONS/SUGAR/BITCH MAGNET/BAD RELIGION/GOVERNMENT ISSUE/SCREAM / FUGAZI /SNFU etc etc...none of em ever played in Teesside!

Funtime_Franckie Posted on 9/8 16:56
re: Rock Garden gig list

Craig,

agree re Comsats. Now I've remembered them may have to dig out my old lps. Waiting for a miracle is a top track!!!

Just remembered I also saw the Au Pairs at the Coatham Bowl.

Best band I ever saw live was the Ramones at Nottingham, never been so exhausted at the end of a gig in my life. Never more than a 3 second gap between songs and all played at 100mph.

borobadge Posted on 9/8 18:17

i liked the band, Cowboys International as well...prescence and good toons..

Archie:
Not really an article as such, but I am now gathering stuff for a "Teesside music scene" type website, and a Rock Garden gig list would be typical of the kind of trainspotter-nerd kind of thing to put on it. I love lists me.

re: Rock Garden gig list

I provided a bunch of the Friday night metal acts to Cogga for that list.

Acts off the top of my head that also played but don't have dates for include

Ethel the Frog
Toad and the Wet Sprocket
Vardis
Angelwitch
Wytchfynder General
Diamond Head
Mythra

and considering I spent practically every Friday night I can remember during 79 and 80 at the place and it was rare there wasn't a band on there must have been loads more.

Any more ageing rockers out there with better memories.

Loved that Lurkers link, I'm going to have to purchase a turntable now and get the old vinyls out.
Craig you know me through Lee, as in Lee and Sue.
Got that tape from you before I moved to Manchester, so it must of been late 80's I think.
Think I went to that Wasted Youth gig too, seen them somewhere in Boro, unless they played at the crypt.

re: Rock Garden gig list

Can't believe one of the most memorable nights has been missed out.

The Gotham City Swing Band,

also John Foxx played their after he and Ultravox went their seperate ways.

BTW August 10th 1978 - Angelic Upstarts (made The Gazette after bringing a pigs head on stage) I was the DJ that night, and Monitor were the support band.

Also I think Eater did the pigs head thing before the Upstarts, although it was minus the Bobby's Helmet

As an afterthought I thought The Selector were a late replacement for The Members. I'm probably wrong though.

Me & me mate were so taken by them we hitch-hiked to Liverpool the following week to see them, they played at Erics.. Blooming bouncers wouldn't let me in at first as I had DM's on and boots wer'nt allowed. I sweet talked my way in though.

Afterwards the band give us a lift to Leeds as thats were they were staying,

Jumped on the bus to go to Easterside and ended up in Scarborough to watch the Subs, slept under the bridge on Valley Road.
Bad Manners in Whitby, like something out of the warriors, stood on the bridge with bottles after a riot with the N. Yorkshire boys. Spent the night up near the Abbey. Crazy times, glad I didn't miss it. 44 years old and still got Nechrophilia in my collection, cheers Bugsy.....

Craig, you've blew my secret identity. Yes postie, but don't tell anyone. I think wasted youth were about before I even knew of goth. They were ok at the time, couldn't play the stuff now though. Still got a tape you did called free for all. Squirrel Bait, Descendants, Minutemen, Bad Brains to name just a few on there. Watergate tapes written on it. Was this your first business venture?

heehee, watergate tapes...yeh form about 84-88, i used to flog bootlegs of live bands most of which i recorded meself. The Free for All compilation was pretty darn good, Lee was on about it a couple years back too. Halcyon daze for music...the 90s was cacka !

you still in Manc then?

Badge, I dont think that Jimmy was the "actual" owner, but his brother Brian, who also happens to be Mrs Jumpers dad.

Whether Jimmys name was on the door, I'm not sure, but the money was certainly provided by Brian, who made his money as a steeplejack.

He still has all the contracts for the bands etc in a box in the attic, I believe.

Craig,I moved back to Boro about 5 years ago. Working in Darlo now though.
Some of the 90's stuff was alright, got into some of that so called grunge stuff then, Tad and Mudhoney. One of the best gigs I've been to was Buffalo Tom at the international in Manchester.

FW_2 Yes my initials are PM, (but don't tell anyone) Do I know you?
I guess people must be keeping there ticket stubs. I know I can't remember most of the gigs I've been to.

I kind of know you - my dad and your mam are cousins, and my husband used to work with you when you were a postie at Cannon Park. Small world, innit?

re: Rock Garden gig list

Selecter played Tues 19th August 1980 - the night we beat Leeds 3-0 - Pauline Black mentioned it when they came onstage - Incidentally Selecter play in Darlington this Saturday night.

Pere Ubu played on the 17th November 1978, same night as the Clash at the Town Hall.

According to Penetration website they played the Rock Garden on 22nd Jan 1977 with Gen X, 8th August 1977, 18th Aug 1978,April 21st and 22 1979, 29th September 1979 (2 shows 1 under 18's, 1 over 18's)

I'm 99% certain 999 and Pinpoint played on the 8th December 1978. Loads and loads of others but those are the only definate dates I've got at the moment.

I don't really think there were tickets for many bands were there? I seem to remember just paying a quid on the door after leaving the Acklam.

re: Rock Garden gig list

its probably easier to say who DIDNT play.....(blondie, television, siouxsie sioux, eddie and t'hot rods..etcetcetc)

there was a year or so when some really great reggae bands played...

and that 999 gig in 1978 is spot on . 'cos we had played DirtyLeeds away that day, and i was bitten by a police dog outside the peacock pub, had to walk round t'pitch to the st john room for treatment, refused to go to hospital and said i would go to the general later, back in the boro..but the bus ended up on ilkley moor and we were late back so i thought, phuq it get straight in to the rocky..and 999 were on !!!we won as well @ leeds that year........

anyway i saw a band at the rocky once called...shang hai.

I'm sure that I've got a single of yours. Can't remember for the life of me what it was called.

Can see a rummage in the garage coming on tonight.
