Cheating scum taxi drivers

I knew I had lost my phone in the back of a taxi,
I knew what company it was.
I didnt cancel it in hope of having it returned by the taxi company.
Three days later I cancel my phone.
Bill comes to £1438 last month.
The cheating scumbag has been phoning Pakistan with it.
Ok I should have cancelled straight away, sue me for having faith in humanity.
What a bunch of dirty (unts they are.
Anybody know what I can do about this?
As far as I can see Ive got no leg to stand on.

ToneLoc Posted on 12/8 8:34
re: Cheating scum taxi drivers

Can you remember the taxi number? I know I never can. The only thing I can suggest is that you report it to the police and whoever licences the taxi's (the council?)

I was pizzed as a fart.
I know its really my fault but I cant believe someone could be so fookin cruel to someone else.
How the fook am I supposed to pay that off?
Going to the police today.

O2 couldnt give a toss last night. All they are bothered about is filling their coffers.

Mobile phone companies usually ring you if the bill is becoming high when it normally isn't - incase it's been nicked, so I would see where you stand as far as they are concerned because they haven't followed their procedure (it's the same when credit cards ares nicked - if it is usualy caned they ring you to check it is actually you using it)

If he was part of a big company, go in, see the manager, be very polite, and make it clear that you want will be seeking civil redress from the company, and in doing so will ensure that the press, the council and anyone else you caan think of, will get to hear about it, obviously "you'd rather just forget about this if a good will gesture was made by the company"...

failing that, stick an "I love Bin Laden " sticker on the back of the taxi and ring MI5

SuperBokSupper Posted on 12/8 8:42
re: Cheating scum taxi drivers

My bill has never been above 50 quid in 16 months of being with them and as far as they are concerned I made the calls.
Brilliant way to treat a 'valued' customer.

In response to what the taxi driver looked like, he was of Asian descent and he is a right (unt.
I couldnt beat hi min fear of being labelled a racist or such like.

The_Commisar Posted on 12/8 8:51
re: Cheating scum taxi drivers

Bokkers

Ring them up, point out they have a duty of care, which they failed to attend to as they did not act on the basis of obviously fradulent phone use, ask to speak to someone from their fraud unit, get them to explain what they should do in the case of fraudulent phone use (what patterns they look for etc), then put a letter to them highlighting that they failed to do what they said was their own policy, I'd still go down the line of making it clear to the taxi firm that one of their staff committed fraud and that you would be complaining to the council, and hows their license application doing....

You have nothing to lose...

purpleloui Posted on 12/8 9:25
re: Cheating scum taxi drivers

Assuming the taxi driver "stole" the phone (it could have been his next passenger that took it) ask for an itemised bill to be sent immediately and they may be some UK numbers that could lead you to prove it was the driver eg work/home numbers.

My boyfriend had his phone stolen in a pub and was fairly certain who had taken it. He got the bill (£480 of which around £400 unauthorised calls) and rang the most common dialled number acting as an agent offering a free deal. The thief's wife could not resist and so gave her name and address. A quick visit to the house confirmed the thief and a quiet conversation regarding involving the police resulted in the cash being paid there and then.

Worth a try

"No company can charge you for a service YOU did not use, that a fact, write that down."

On second thoughts, don't, it's wrong.

Don't blame the phone company, you should have put a handset lock on it, a pin lock so if it was turned off, they couldn't turn it on. Failing all that, why didn't you bar it then remove the bar when you got it back?

SuperBokSupper Posted on 12/8 10:31
re: Cheating scum taxi drivers

alright neil.

placed trust in the wrong people hoping to get it back off the taxi driver so didnt bar it for three days in the hope of getting it back.

SmoggyMatt Posted on 12/8 12:12
re: Cheating scum taxi drivers

Feel for ya SBS. Usually I would suggest that if you can put a reasonable case forward then you might be able to come to some sort of agreement with the phone company, then I read you're with O2, and I realised how screwed you are.

Same thing happened to my sister last year. Had her phone stolen. tried to cancel it but due to poor cutomer service (something o2 are famous for) she didnt get it done till 2 days after the incident. By then a bill of £850 had been run up. After lengthy correspondance including proof of attempts to get thru and so on, O2 ADMITTED that she didn't make the calls, and that she had trouble cancelling, but refused to reimburse her. As far as I know she's now in talks with OFCOM about it vut it doesnt look good.

Have you cancelled your direct debit? If you don't pay it they can't send baliffs round or anything like that, but they can destroy your credit rating. Good luck with it

i know it's not as major as the above posts, but it just shows the kind of mind set of these people.....there's one old taxi driver out there(long grey beard, london type taxi) who hides a pound coin in the back, and if he thinks you've had a drink, when he gives you you're change it's a pound short, but if you're not that drunk and you notice and complain,he jumps out the front, picks up the hidden coin in the back, and blames you for dropping it....i did notice this scam.....to his cost!!

re: Cheating scum taxi drivers

Hi I havnt read all replies so may be saying something somebody has already echoed..

3 years ago i left my phone on the back seat of a BORO Taxi, i realised immediately but having a toddler in my arms couldnt attract his attention.

I got in rang the company immediately they said they would get in touch with the driver,,,,they did whilst i was on the phone...
I heard the driver say "No theres no phone in here"
It was impossible to have picked anybody else up...so i rang the phone...it rang and rang...
I rang it again and it was turned off...

so i rang Vodaphone immediately explained what had happened and they blocked the phone.

I rang the Taxi firm back and said i was getting the police involved and i needed the drivers number they contacted the driver to explain, the guy came back onto the phone and said he had pulled over and found it under the seat...

This didnt explain how it had been turned off 10 minuted earlier.

When i got it back the £18 credit had been used and all my numbers wiped Texts and everything.
Worst thing was there was a text from my mum i couldnt bring myself to delete after she died (nothing special but just sentimental)

The police couldnt do anything because it wasnt a big enough crime.

I Hate them for this dishonesty and wouldnt dream of looking through never mind using someone elses phone i think there are very private things stored that quite frankly is nobody elses business.

That has dredged up old bad feeling...I feel sorry for you

re: Cheating scum taxi drivers

Don't trust most taxi drivers at all Asian or white. I got a taxi a few years ago and gave the driver two tenners to pay him. He said thay were both forgeries, even though i got them from a bank machine earlier. He stopped at a bank machine and i had to get out and get more cash, meanwhile he kept hold of the 'forgeries'. I was a bit pist and realised when he gave me the notes back he had probably given me forged notes. Needless to say both of the notes he gave me were used again at that taxi firm. I'm not going to say which company it was but they have an office on Southfield Road and their name is an abbreviation of Middlesbrough.

It serves you right. If you lose your phone, you cancel it straight away. You don't wait 3 days before cancelling in the hope of it being returned. Society doesn't work like that. Think of this as pay back for your naivety.

As for the vile racism, there's really no need. Fair enough, whoever got hold of it shouldn't have done what they've done. It was wrong. You should never take advantage of an idiot.

capio Posted on 12/8 22:35

If he thought that phone would get returned, he's an idiot and deserves to pay for his mistake. He'll cancel it asap if it happens again, I can tell you that.

My car got clamped a month ago and I had to pay £400 to get it back. That was MY stupid fault for parking where I shouldn't. I won't be doing that again.

In my opinion, you would deserve it.

We went out once and forgot to close the front room window. We got burgled. Aside from my girlfriends bike and £20 quid, nothing else was taken. We were lucky. Again, I cocked up because I left the window open. My fault again. Needless to say, I don't leave it open anymore.

Are you really an ignorant bigot, or is that a wind up? I'm not too sure.

The vast, majority of Asians (not ALL of them are from Pakistan, believe it or not) are hard working, nice and pleasent people. However, like the White race, there are a few who tarnish it (i.e. people like yourself).

It's a shame you posted the actual destination of the call on the thread actually, if you'd just put "abroad", it wouldn't really have right wingers using it to push their agendas.

re: Cheating scum taxi drivers

We seem to have threads like this every week nowadays. Always the same pattern: somebody reports a crime and they just happen to mention that the perpetrator was Asian/Muslim/Pakistani/whatever. And you immediately know where the thread is going - the whole thing is instantly racialised and it soon descends into a constant stream of bigotry and racism against the aforementioned group.

It reminds me of the B N P internet trolls who use the constant drip-drip approach to "subtly" hammer home their racist propaganda.

Can't believe that people out there actually do that!

I remember once last year my flatmate left his mobile in a taxi by accident and we called the taxi firm 3 times - each time the lady supposedly got on the radio, after checking which job it was, and the guy said no, didn't have it.

The next day I get a phonecall from this taxi driver; he'd called "home" on my friend's phone - his Mam had answered and told him which contacts, i.e. flatmates, he should call to arrange a pick-up. Bloke said he'd been driving round with this phone all day and night and not once had his controller said that somebody had rang about a lost phone - pure luck we got that back!

the other thing is, try going to another town and trying to get a taxi as easily as you can here. if you think they are dodgy, then make sure you have the right money so they cant rip you off, make sure your phone is secure at all times etc etc etc etc etc. or get the bus.

capio Posted on 13/8 1:40
re: Cheating scum taxi drivers

Yeah man, there are places where it is much easier to get a taxi at 2am that is not important.

The fact that you keep justifying stealing £1500 because of a person making an error in judgment baffles me.
You have a very strange brand of ethics.

By your reckoning a girl who walks alone at night down a dark alley deserves to be raped.
Your views are disturbing.

profitt Posted on 13/8 1:42
re: Cheating scum taxi drivers

All big companies have PR/legal complaints specialists who have to deal with the really persistent customers as well as the watchdog types in the media. If you kick up enough of a fuss and get in touch with the right people(without shouting or swearing), you'll eventually get through. My job is basically one step below these people. They're much more willing and able to write off/compromise in these situations than the front line call centre workers.

Just be persistent and if the person you speak to can't/won't help, ask for the complaint to be escalated. Don't accept being told to write in either. I've worked in a correspondence department before and the chances are, the person responding to your letter will have no more authority than the person you spoke to on the phone.

If the company complaints procedure says you can complain over the phone, they will have internal processes to escalate the complaint. If you're transferred to a supervisor, make it clear that if they can't resolve the complaint, you will want it to be escalated further up the chain. If neccesary, to someone who can deal with legal complaints.

A good way to find out if you're dealing with someone who can help is to ask for their full name. If they don't/won't give you it, you're probably not dealing with someone far enough down the chain.

My job is basically to deal with customers like yourself with serious complaints although for the amount of money involved, I'd have to get the authorisation from the legal people. I've basically listed the worst case scenario of a customer I'd have to deal with. Although I don't have any experience of O2's customer service I can't see any reason why the process would be different to ours.

i see your point, and i agree, if i took the risk of walking down a dark alley in the middle of the night, and that happened, i would never forgive myself for being so stupid as to walk down the alley in the middle of the night, because i would have known it was dangerous to do such a thing. the world is full of horrible men.

Just a little defence for cab drivers. The lad who I sit next to in my office got hammered one night after work and left his laptop and phone in the back of a black cab. There was nothing on either to identify ownership but his bag had the name of our company on it. The driver looked it up in the yellow pages and dropped it off in reception (well out of his way) the next day.

There are some honest people left in the world.

A couple of years ago, I got a taxi home from a wedding and left my camera in the back of the taxi. I didn't realise it was missing until the next morning. It was a digital model and quite expensive, but I was gutted that I had lost all the photographs of my brothers' wedding. I phoned the taxi company in Thornaby (Eagle Taxis) and was told that the driver had found it and handed it in, so I went down and collected it.
Not all Asian taxi drivers are 'cheating scum'.

Alright fellas.

Just come back to work and read the posts.

Proffitt, thanks for the advice, I will certainly follow up along these lines!

yeah_man and others who think I am labelling all taxi drivers as 'dodgy asian bastads", the only reason I pointed out that he was Asian is because someone asked what he looked like. Putting 2 and 2 together in that most of the phone calls were made to Pakistan I concluded he was of Asian descent.

Capio, cheers for your support, I am waiting for the itemised bill to arrive and hopefully that will impress upon O2 the fact that I did not make those calls.

BobendBill Posted on 14/8 9:42
re: Cheating scum taxi drivers

when you get your bill in you will know if its Pakistan or not.
If not you have the numbers to nails the scum -if it is abroad you have the numbers to keep ringing them all hours of the night to drive them into submision to hand over the scabby fookers number !
who knows apart rom the huge bill it ould be fun !!

bendylikemendi Posted on 14/8 9:53
re: Cheating scum taxi drivers

S_B_S, as someone further up the thread mentioned, when you get your bill check if there are any calls made to UK numbers as well and get a mate to phone up and pretend they've won a prize or something of the kind and get their details - chances are the driver will have been calling his friends and family.

I'd also give 02 a ring and make sure they have barred both the SIM and IMEI of the phone. Barring the IMEI means that even if the SIM is changed in the phone it still won't work.

Stick with it with 02, they're a lot better than some of the networks I've dealt with. I'd also recommend keeping a record of contact when you call them up. Who you spoke to, when and what was said. Not all of the front line staff update account notes in great detail and in the past I've often ended up going round in circles saying the same thing to several people.

Finally, another good piece of advice is to call up your network and get them to place the premium and international bars on your account (note that some networks will differentiate between the bars for allowing you to call abroad from the UK and using your phone when abroad as well). This will prevent high value calls from being made on the phone and any hassle you may have in calling to lift them should you need to is much less than having a £1500 bill drop through your post box!!

Best of luck

skiprat Posted on 14/8 10:27
re: Cheating scum taxi drivers

Yeah_man, I can see the basis of you're point regarding that the lad shouldn't have been silly enough to leave it in the taxi, but mistakes happen, why should he be left feeling "a little silly" when he's basically been ripped off by a criminal?

Same as a woman who apparantly "deserves it" if she walks into a dark alleyway at night. Seems like a ridiculous way of looking at it.

aureole Posted on 14/8 10:41
re: Cheating scum taxi drivers

Also, if there are UK numbers then get yourself a copy of the UK-info CD and do a reverse-lookup, then make a polite visit to the places. Odds are the chap has rung home on it.

Probably best only to do this if the police are uninterested though.

In further response to allegations of racism I think that I am a fair and reasonable person, with a fairly high level of education (ok lacking A BIT IN COMMON SENSE!), but the way I have been treated here and in the past by asian taxi drivers is leading me to a dislike, ok maybe irrational and prejudiced, of these guys.

Yes they make profit but if they credit people for calls mad from their handset when there is no bar or pin-lock on then it sets quite a precedent. Used to work for vodafone and saw one guy run up a bill of over £2000 in a few days, you were lucky in a way as it could have been much, much worse.

It's like if someone steals electricity from my house. I still have to pay the electricity board but they have stolen from me. Hope you can find out who did it though.

re: Cheating scum taxi drivers

Ring the Gazette. As long as you are willing to be named and pictured in the paper they should be interested in the story, especially if now thanks to the mammoth bill you aren't able to do something really important or heart-warming. They will at the very least contact O2 for some answers which will put the pressure on for them to give you a discount. I cant see them wiping off the whole lot though cos it's not their fault you fooked up, plus you can't actually prove you didn't make the calls (although it's obvious that your latent racism means you don't have many friends in Pakistan). Hope this helps.

I said 'latent' which means 'concealed, not visible or apparent, dormant, undeveloped but capable of development' not 'blatant', which is almost like the opposite but not quite.

It was your use of 'they' in your very first post which made me suspect this of you, although as you say you only mentioned the word 'asian' when someone asked for a description.

Unless of course you are in fact branding all taxi drivers (regardless of race) 'dirty cnuts' - in which case I apologise and take it back as it's clearly just fine and dandy to tar members of all one profession with the same brush.

Anyway, point of posting was to point you in the direction of some advice not trade insults. The Gazette thing is worth a try - you've got nowt to lose.

I asked a question of someone else and you butted in with your PC jibes, and involved yourself. Anti-racism is not the same as Political Correctness, this site is allied to "Kick Racism out of football."

Apart from Bandito I have not pursued anyone significantly on the issue, to say I have accused an incredible amount of people is an exaggeration. I have questioned people, and I'm careful not to jump in with labelling people unless what they have said is obviously so.Don't you think its important to challenge others?

You apparently shadow me about monitoring what I say on here, then you will know that I post and respond on a variety of subjects.

madlad Posted on 21/8 16:28
re: Cheating scum taxi drivers

I was with o2 for a year a while back. I didn't receive a bill from them for FIVE months despite repeted requests.
In the end, they took all the bills out in one go.
I called them , demanded to go through to the directors office, and then when I got through, explained what had happened. They automatically gave me 50% line rental for the rest of the contract. I told them where to go and cancelled it.
They wrote to me and said I had owed the outstanding amount for the contract and that I had breached their terms and conditions....
I politely explained to them that OFCOM were aware of what had happened and that they had breached their own terms and conditions prior to me doing it with their billing catastophe.
I also explained it would not look good if they had to explain to OFCOM why they had breached their T's and C's.
They backed down, wrote the amount off, and I've heard nothing since.
There is also nothing on my credit file.
My advice is this:

Go to the Taxi firm
Explain what has happened
Demand the drivers Hackney licence number (to give to the police - they cannot refuse it if you ask)
Politely explain that their name will be dragged through the local and national press if something is not done within 7 days.
That is a reasonable timeframe for them to own up
If nothing happens, keep them informed, but then take it to the local press, then national press - that will heavily affect their business and cost them more than your phone bill.
If they are fairly intelligent, they will reimburse you.
Even better, show them the itemised bill with the calls on it - the o2 fraud team can trace it in conjunction with the police.
It IS an offence to steal, then fraudulently use a mobile phone. End of.

Go to the police and insist something is done about it. It should not take a rocket scientist to work out who the common denominator is in all this call making.

Let me know how it ends please.

capio Posted on 21/8 17:05
re: Cheating scum taxi drivers

The owner of the company were all was assuming was involved does not give up money easily.
'Allegedly' he was responsible for a campaign of destroying other companies by burning down their fleets, this included people within his own family who owned rival firms.

Worst of all, a very close family member is involved with a very close family member of a local mp, which gives the guy a lot of power in the local council, I know for a fact he has blocked certain public transport proposals as it would affect his business.

Dirty games this taxi lark.

Having said that, this doesn't mean to avoid bad press he wont use common sense, but you need big gonads to take him on.

We can hardly name them on a public messageboard.

Sorry fellas....
I'm really not sure about which taxi firm in the Boro it might be as I've not lived there for a while.
Mind you, if they're anything like the taxi firms in Newcastle, then they're nobbers.
We have one up here who, until they were rumbled, used to pick up fares and ask a simple "oh, you off anywhere nice?"
If the word holiday was mentioned, the house would be turned over by the very same taxi company.
three of their drivers did it for a while before they were caught out.
Two things when I'm in me car -
1) never give way to taxi's
2) never let buses cut you up

Nyar to the world!
