| The Fall | |
As I have grown older it has slowly dawned om me that The Fall are undoubtably the greatest band ever. No Contest! Anyone agree?

Well, yeah. Dunno whether it's general senility but I seem to hear bits of Fall songs on TV all the time in adverts and trailors. My head tilts like a prairie dog's for a few seconds as I grope for the tune and then it's gone. --- Post edited by Gillandi on 16/8 0:22 ---

It's an 'age' thing. | |

A band for all ages. The band for all ages - without a doubt the greatest of all time. Once again I'm looking forward to the next album with a real sense of anticipation. The new American boys in The Fall really can play. And Mr Smith is on a roll. Fall Heads Roll.

Aye, it's probably just tinnitus. Still, phwaor, what a band. Especially when they had a chubby rockabilly drummer who was "frightened of his own hands." "Container Driver's" and "Jawbone And The Air-rifle" are classic UK Psycho-Country tunes.

I've been meaning to ask for a while actually. So are you named after "the letter" Dr Buck? Dr Buck's letter.

Got it in one there Rob. | |

I'm going to watch them at the Leeds Festival out of curiosity. I've never heard much from any of their 5,000,000 albums and wouldn't even know where to begin. --- Post edited by Cobain_94 on 16/8 9:42 ---

I knew a lad who once played the bass for The Fall, but seeing as he's just one of 352 to hold that position I didn't include him yesterday's list of famous people I knew.

Totally agree with this thread. Had a few barren years when Mark E went off his rocker but they now totally kick ass again. Fall Heads Roll is a cracking Album. My fave album of there's is Perverted by Language. Tremendous stuff

| re: The Fall | |
People talk about a recent barren spell but I don't see it. I became a fan in 1999 and they've been superb nearly all the way through. "The Unutterable" - very good "Are You Are Missing Winner?" - poor "The Fall vs. 2003" - excellent "The Real New Fall LP/Country on the Click" - superb "We Wish You a Protein Christmas" - excellent "Fall Heads Roll" - very good There's probably been more, but they're the ones I've been aware of. Mostly excellent. The barren spell must have been the 90s, but thankfully I missed all that.

You should try some of the early albums like Live at the Witch Trials, Dragnet, Totale's Turns and The Wonderful and Frightening World of the Fall. Brilliant stuff.

Cheers Funtime_Franckie. I have 'Live at the Witch Trials' and it's one of my fave albums of all time (recently got the special edition 2-Disc one). I've also heard 'Dragnet' which is also excellent. Other than 'This Nation's Saving Grace' - which I don't particularly rate - everything between 1979 and 1999 is largely unknown to me.

| re: The Fall | |
If you haven't got them I would definitely invest in The Wonderful and Frightening World of the Fall and Perverted by Language. The tracks Eat Yerself Fitter and Tempo House on Perverted are classic Fall stuff. Definitely 2 of their best albums.

That's the thing with a band such as the Fall ain't it. Everyone seems to have their favourite Fall album and it's usually different from everyone else's. I went through a spell of listening to nothing else a couple of weeks back. This seems to be happening on a regular basis. I'm with Revol here. My fave at the minute is Country on The Click. Mind you I think 'Sparta F.C.' is easily bettered by the version on The Peel Sessions Box Set I'd take the Box set as my desrt isaland disc.

I've had my eyes on that boxset for some time, DrBuck. I must check it out soon. There are 3 or 4 discs aren't they? Great stuff.

nah guys, Rowche Rumble and How I Wrote Elastic Man, each a classic...agree that Live At The Witch Trials would be a good place to start...but, by and large, they're all brilliant....miss Peely and those bright incisive sessions.

| re: The Fall | |
Revol, The Peel sessions has six discs and is probably their greatest release (if you're a fan), shows good, bad and indifferent sides to the band. Most of it is excellent though, and some of the songs outdo their offical versions. You can pick it up for about twenty quid if you look around, which is really good value. Most Fall fans don't really rate '...Witch Trials', however I love it. I remember buying it on it's release way back. I always hesitate at recommending any music to anyone, but most Fall albums have at least three or four great songs on them and my own faves change from week to week. I would say that if you like your music to be nice and shiny and friendly and conservative then The Fall aren't for you. But it is your loss.

| re: The Fall | |
Funnily enough Perverted By Language is one of my least favourite Fall albums - I remember talking with Marc Riley - my alltime Fall hero - backstage in Darlo and he thought they may have rushed it out to make a statement on his departure. I've always thought the Peel session versions of Eat Yerself Fitter, Smile, Garden and Hex Knot were much better. That's just me though. They are the band I've been obsessed by for over a quarter of a century. Obviously I'm in good company here. In fanzine land there was a time when and football fanzine worth its salt was stuffed full of Fall song titles for headlines. I'm sure those in the know will have spotted a few in Fly Me over the years. I think just about everyone who has edited or co-edited has been a big fan. Gillandi, Endy, Min G etc.

saw em at THE MADISON in Nov 83 with 2 drummers EAT YOURSELF FITTER! 'LAST ORDERS' and 'PSYCHO MAFIA' great tracks.

| re: The Fall | |
Great to know there are people around who still like stuff like The Fall. I've bought their music off and on since the first single but I wouldn't have classed myself as a fan really. As I said before it's just been the last few years I've become a Fall bore. A turning point was watching a documentary and MES ordered the drummer to start again and when he did something took hold and the hairs on my neck stood up. No looking back after that. Marc Rileys shows on 6 Music are excellent by the way. There doesn't seem to be any bitterness either, he still plays The Fall and says MES is a top bloke. Might be a bit tongue in cheek, though I don't think so.

Yeah agree that Psycho Mafia / Bingo Masters was a brilliant 1st single. Think my fave sinles of theres were It's the New Thing (B side various times is superb) and Elastic Man Saw them last year at The Sage in Gateshead and they didn't finish the set cos Mark E didn't appreciate what the bloke on the mixing desk was doing, so hit him and walked off stage. Got the Peel 6 cd box set that night and it is top quality.

| re: The Fall | |
As I understand it Mark Smith and Riley wouldn't speak for years. It was a big bust up when Riley left - as chronicled in his first single "Jumper Clown." A nickname Smith called Riley. basically it came to blows afer Riley danced in an Aussie nightclub and showed more energy than when playing the gig. But they met again and made up last year and get on again.

| re: The Fall | |
Didn't know Jumper Clown was about Mark E. Will have to listen to it again. Thought Marc Riley and the Creepers were pretty good too. Location Bangladesh is a top track. --- Post edited by Funtime_Franckie on 17/8 13:00 ---

| re: The Fall | |
"Dared to dance on an Aussie floor b***dy fool bl**dy bore." something like that. Mark Smith lined up the band and slapped them across the face one by one when he got to Riley the future Hapless Boy Lard punched him back on hte nose. His days were numbered. Also The Fall song Middlemass is supposed to be about Riley - something the latter was presumably unaware of - it tells of how he went off to live in Tin Pan Alley in London and was living it up trying to be a popstar. Oh and when Riley left The Fall they did an unflattering tribute called Hey Marc Riley - Riley was a biog Bo Didley fan. I once asked Riley if Creep was about him. He said he hadn't thought about it (Creepers). --- Post edited by rob_fmttm on 17/8 13:06 ---

Never heard of a Hey Marc Riley track. Can remember Hey Luciani though. I knew that Marc and Mark had a fall out (no pun intended) but didn't realise it was so vitriolic that they were penning abusive songs against each other.
