Middlesbrough nightclubs

I've always been intrigued with the old night clubs that were about and when they changed into the ones we knew now or just closed and became something else. The earliest I remember is from the mid nineties:-

The Theatre- 93/94? to present: House/Indie mainly
The Arena - ? to 2005: House/Indie/Rock
Blaises - ? to 2003/4?: Indie/Rock/80's(During the 90's that is!)/dance
The Bongo 1765? to present: Reggae
The Madison - ? to 2000ish?: Pop

Step down memory lane for some and a bit of education for others! Can anyone help us out here listing rough years for any clubs.

Feel free to add/correct any that I've listed!

Nedkat Posted on 17/8 15:33
re: Middlesbrough nightclubs

Gaskins was around about the same period as Maddisons.

The Bongo used to be the Kenyan Club, and it's been open for donkeys years.

The Madhouse opened around 1971, I was going there in 1973/74.

Was hoping someone would tell us a bit more about the Havana. I remember it from when I was at school but I'm sure there's a few that used to go and can say when it opened/shut etc...

Big_Shot Posted on 17/8 15:48
re: Middlesbrough nightclubs

The Arena opened around 1992. I think for the first few months it was solely a dance club before they started the popular friday nights, which initially was indie one floor and rock the other, they eventually got rid of the rock. I remember going to the first ever one.

The Havana opened 88/89 and wasn't really open for that long, closing in maybe 91/92. It was certainly shut when the Arena opened.

The Havana used to be the Speak Easy I think and then changed to Havana about 1989/90ish. Closed when the Arena opened around 1994/95 at a guess.

Yeah, it did used to be Speakeasy, must have opened 88/89, whenever aciiiiieeeeeeeeeed took off. Memory and all that, closed early 90's and turned into ....I forget, but it's rubbish.

Mandys was on Albert Road opposite the town hall, I think it later became blaizes but I'd already left to serve Queen and Country by then.

I hadn't realised that the Havana was open for such a short space of time! I remember wanting to go in on a Saturday afternoon when I was a kid so I got my Dad to drop me off outside where I told him I was going to meet a friend to go into town.

After about five minutes he said 'You're waiting to go in there aren't you? Get back in the car!'

GillZean Posted on 17/8 15:57
re: Middlesbrough nightclubs

That's right Big Shot, Belmont.

I remember having spent a couple of years away, i came back and the Empire had stopped being a pub on Linthorpe Road, and turned into the Theatre, and Belmont had moved form Belmont Road(??) to Linny Road. All too much for my puddled little mind to take in.

Centrefolds, now there was a place, upstairs in Linny Road in the precinct, no idea where exactly, but give me half a dozen Blastaways and I could find it, no bother !!

It doesn't seem that long ago, but when you think about it you realise it is. The Arena started getting a lot of top up and coming bands on around 1994, Oasis played April 94. and had been up and running for a good couple of years by then, firstly there were no bands and then for a while local ones.

re: Middlesbrough nightclubs

I think that as I left school in 94 some clubs had only been open a couple of years. The Arena/The Theatre etc... And I'd never known any different. It's only now looking back you realise that they don't stay open that long! I know the Arena used to be the Rock Garden but did it re-open as the Arena or was it dormant for a while? Did it used to be something before that too?

Friday night was Indie night and I was there virtually every week dancing away in my hooded top, stonewashed flares and original kickers, sweating my nads off then going to the room at the back to "chill out"
Saturday night was Housey Housey night, didn't frequent it as much but do remember the main DJ was called Lee Harrison, I think, and used to shout "In da area" every 20 seconds.

That Lava Ignite or whatever is opposite the bridge n down abit near Chicago Rock. I've avoided the ones in very recent years as there's been so many. From the 90's back everyone knew where they were and there was a pretty clear distinction of what a night club was!

The one under the bridge was Frescos and before that, a pizza shop of some sort!

re: Middlesbrough nightclubs

the marimba was upstairs from the rock garden..2 different clubs..before it was called the rock garden it was called "The Beerkeller"

Mandy's was 1 of a trio in the n/east all owned at one time by the same people, 1 in boro, 1 in sunlun and 1 in nucassle...mandy's, annabels and julies...

the speakeasy on linny road was also called "the claggy mat" due to the sticky carpets!it late became the havana, i was in there one night and it got raided, big time by the cops..surreal night that was..summer of luurve..there was also a record playing person in there called D.J.Hugo, that was hughie former lead singer in Frenzy Battalion and Emergency Purge!!..john graham was on the door..it was owned at the time by mr andrews who also had Fatso restaurant, he then opened the arena and so closed/sold the havana....at one time he also had the corner house (not sure if he still do's)...

there was a club called The Contessa and also a club called Marley's both on grange rd..

and there was another music venue called "Cyclops" that was in the masons hall near the bodega bar i think it was called Exchange Place, as it was the origional area for the trams and trolley bus's depot..

there was a gay club (mainly lesbian) opposite the bus station called the "53 club" not that # 53 is anything special in a Lesbian Diary, just that was its door number...

and of course the town had its legendary "Blues" clubs from the 1960s onwards @ various locations around the town..i used to go to the one near Ayresome Park (ayresome st?/kensington rd)....

for fresh we went to The Kirk and entertained farmers daughters and girls with 2 flannels....(that was an inhouse reference amongst me and my small band of troubadors to posh girls, as we all know that real posh girls have 2 different face flannels, 1 for their face and 1 for their derrier!)

i played in bands that played in The Rock Garden, Centrefolds and Gaskins+1..it was called plus 1, after it had been burned down the first time!!!(no smoke without fire).....

and to give the bongo its full title...its called Club International The Bongo.....

Inn cog which was a side door next to big Woolies in linthorpe rd. Mad dogs, Madison in the cleveland centre, Blinkers which was grange rd I think and The blues which could be anywhere but you somehow managed to find it. The rock garden and the dinky doo in Easterside.

Ossies was owned jointly by Barry Faulkner and Dave Rea.
They then bought the defunked Mandys which became Blaises.
The pair went there seperate ways with Dave having Ossies. Dave then sold Ossies to a friend of his, John Rogers who renamed Ossies to its original name from the 60's "The Outlook".

when centerfold/sink burned down it was a gay club called strings, the rumour at the time was that it was a fag that started it.

first gig at the arena was zodiac mindwarp and terrorvision in 1992. a few pictures linked.

the photo of the girl in the crowd, she was called jenny and she got her belly button ring ripped out whilst stagediving.

Jono Feds The Astoria was around the corner from flares which was then an old mans pub called the wellington, The Scene was where dovecoat salerooms used to be, and was built as a copy of the Liverpool Cavern, Boros first ever Disco, The Fiesta was in Norton, the one in South bank may have later been Bennets, but before that i think it was called the Sporting Club, anyway it was over the road from the Coop at the South Bank end of Normanby Road.

re: Middlesbrough nightclubs

Bit more info on the Havana/Arena bit. Too young for Havana but was an Arena regular, think the Havana DJ line up was Huey and Collin Pattison with Lee Harrison or MC Lee doing the MC bit rather than DJing. Huey later disappeared off the face of the earth as far as I could tell.

When the Arena opened I believe it was promoted by the infamous Charlie Chester (clubland legend) and was a part of the balaeric DJ network (I recently read a book about Manchester and the Arena is one of the few out of town clubs to be mentioned). The Arena residents were Collin and Simon Gibb (not Nigel Gibb - wasn't he in the Bee-Gees?). I believe Simon Gibb was a glass collector in the Havana and thats how he got into it all. I'm sure there was someone else initially, maybe Steve Lee? Later came JM Eazy and Edzy (from Unique 3) but by then it started to die with the prominence of the Empire. Collin and JM Easy always seemed to be in competion with each other and CP just seemed to disappear, glad he doing well now as had some amazing nights. Shame really, I remember Pete Tong saying what an amazing DJ CP was, I think he just got lazy at the end.

Apologies for being an anorak - but I used to love all this stuff!

re: Middlesbrough nightclubs

Oops, I also missed Tino Lugano from the Arena resident lineup, used to play hip-hop and stuff 9-10 downstairs. Think he also used to own Tuff Tribe records which was then near Jack Hatfields before moving to near the bus station. Collin Pattison used to work in there sometimes.

jono_feds Posted on 18/8 13:02
re: Middlesbrough nightclubs

I remember going into that one near the bus station and I think it was Tino who was in there. I used to buy early Jungle records before I got into house. Before that I went to the one under the A66 where I started collecting flyers for B2B, Cream and the raves that were about.

DGS If you think that makes you an anorak look at what I've done!

I appreciate people explaining the history of our house music heritage as I was too young to go to all those places at the height of house music. One thing is for sure and that Teesside played an important part of the history of British dance music!

dean_glovers_studs Posted on 18/8 13:11
re: Middlesbrough nightclubs

The record shop under the A66 was called New Groove, ran by Grant (a cockney) and Robin (a Leicester fan). they also had a record label called Tumblin'. Both really good blokes. It mostly sold US house which every lad in Boro bought at the time. I seemed to be the only person buying slightly harder more proggy stuff in the early nineties in boro. The later moved to one of the arches behind the cornerhouse till the cornerhouse expanded. If anyone has the Danny Tenaglia Hard and Soul album look at the back cover, he thanks all at New Groove/Tumblin records in Middlesbrough. Anyway, I'm getting off topic....

Hooligan X was collin patterson and he didnt make the tracks well not to my knowledge anyway he's never mentioned that he made them to me and he's just starting to get into music production in the past couple of years

hooligan x was collins dj name

after reading all this the other day i phoned colin he's doing the v festival on sunday at hylands park

i was telling him about this thread

he's staying over at mine on sunday night he wants me to show him

collin always plays the saturday afternoon set at the southport weekender he also finishes the afterparty on the sunday night too

i think he's changed his music style a bit since he played up at the arena plays more soulfull house now

he didnt get lazy he just started getting more work in london where he's from
