| FAO Boro historians re: Henry Moszkowicz | |
There's a bit on Vickers blog today about the significance of the Port Vale game at Hartlepool and what might have happened if Boro had gone under. It includes this passage: "It looked terminal when the council pulled out of the rescue package but at the last minute London businessman Henry Moszkowicz responded to a small ad in the Sunday Times and arranged a spy thriller style meeting with Steve Gibson at Heathrow to hand over a suitcase with £300,000 and buy into the consortium. He is little mentioned now and has been airbrushed from history but the Mosblat envelope millionaire was the man who saved the Boro. Without his cash the club would undoubtedly have gone under." Is that true? Mosckowitcz handed over his cash in a suitcase? Doesn't that sound a bit dodgy? What if it had still gone tits up and he lost it? What's the story with the fella? I wasn't in the Boro at the time so missed out on all the gossip? Was he shady? Why was he 'airbrushed out of history'? Why did he never take an active part in the board?

Thought it was Colin Hendersons ICI package that saved us?

'Why did he never take an active part in the board?' I believe he posted a few times under the user name Mr_Suitcase, but decided not to bother anymore due to all the petty arguing. I think he got a 7 day ban at one point for calling Amer a 'qunt'.

George Reynolds got put away for carrying suitcases full of cash around with him. it wasn't his fault he couldn't find a big enough wallet!

I beleive that as part of the Gibbo take over there were "musical differences" Exit Henderson and Mosschops There is no truth whatsoever in the story that a leading north east fooyball chairman called an ex-director "a ***kin idiot" to his face.

he did invest 300k but we reached about 850k but needed 3 million. So Mr H came up with the package that saved us. Steve G then bought out Henry and likewise Henderson to take control. I Think.

Gibbo mentioned him in an interview on Bernie's dvd.

But it was his own dosh right? Everyone else in teh consortium represented corporate investment. Why does a cockney with no link to Teesside stump up £300k just like that and then never try to have any say in how the club is organised?

Perhaps it was payment in advance for all those full page adverts in the programmes.

One of the most significant days in Boro's modern day history as Steve Gibson takes over as Chairman in February 1994. Significantly, Henry Moszkowicz reveals the extent of his ambitions for the club - redevelopment of Ayresome into a 20000 all seater, as Gibson unveils his ambitions for a brand new stadium

Athough he wasnt a native Teessider, didnt he have a soft spot for the club, I might have read this or be imagining it. Maybe he saw the potential of the club, under new leadership and was prepared to risk £300k (which isnt that much when you've got his money) in the hope of a return at a later date ?

I wonder what he's up to now. I could have walked past him in the street, and never known what an important part he played in the saving of our club.

Those links pretty much match my own recollection which was that Henry was the biggest shareholder with his 300k investment, ICI and SandN put in about 200k apiece and Gibbo about 125k. I'm pretty sure that they had an agreement only to sell to consortium members if they sold their shares and only for the original value. So when Henry walked away in 1994, he sold Gibbo 35% of the Boro for 300k. As NTL paid £15m for a 5% share a few years later, that seems quite cheap.

Back in those days him and his wife used to occasionally travel from London to away games with MSS. I remember going up to Blackpool where we all went up on the train then once we got there Mr and Mrs Moszkowicz would go to the ground to have lunch with the Blackpool chairman etc while the rest of us went into the nearest pub for a few pints. On the way back to london we used to play bridge ... none of that Texas Hold Em in those days. Genuine Boro fan for many years before buying into the club and nice bloke as well.
