A Picture

Top left says 86, bottom right says 06 and on the scarf it says reborn. The man holding the flag is supposed to advertise the whole 12th man thing.

re: That 12th man card display was chit

I'm not putting down the 12th man idea, cracking idea, but if they are to make a difference they have to accept when things go wrong and my brash critique albeit less than tactful is accurate.

shaun86 Posted on 24/8 2:10
re: That 12th man card display was chit

yeah true capio, but i still think it looked smart as.could have been clearer and was a bit ambitious but they accepted that, end of the day we beat the champions 2-1 so i'm sure it had some effect. i think the next thing we should get going is new songs and people learning the correct words somehow. we need to be in contact with the club and telling them about things such as run out music, music after goals (e.g none)ect..and i reckon this could be one of the best seasons down at the riverside.its about time like.still doesnt feel like home and we been there years.

well done again everyone involved.might pop 2 the next meeting with some idea's

Ah, the nattering nabobs of negativity rear their ugly heads again.
Here's an original thought. Why don't you get off your chuff and do something to support your team then if you think you can do better, rather than just slag off those that do put in some time and effort?
Oh, and despite your feelings it seems to have had a positive effect on the players, judging by the performance and the result.

capio Posted on 24/8 7:38
re: That 12th man card display was chit

Chit is very unfair and my harsh assessment was beer-fueled, although in all honesty I couldn't read it.

Good effort, maybe it got the fans up for it and fulfilled its objective, who knows.
Aesthetically it wasn't perfect though. Maybe a little ambitious, especially when as opeo so delicately put the north stand is full of piss heads who take their seats late.

chboro Posted on 24/8 7:39
re: That 12th man card display was chit

To tell you the truth - it looked a hell of a lot better than we thought it did when we realised how many empty seats there was prior to kick off.

Not superb, but it still looked good!

ps - I think we need bigger card for any future card display to compensate for people not coming up early.

re: That 12th man card display was chit

I can't imagine what a f nny on it must have been for thesmogster who organised the placing of the cards, but he'd done an excellent job. When we turned up yesterday afternoon we were each given a plan of a block, clearly printed with where each card needed to go. It was a right pain in the mush to do, especially as the bloody wind kept blowing the cards away and we had to start again, so it took longer than anticipated. So for people on the night who only had to lift a piece of card up for a minute and couldn't even be bothered to do that.....thanks, you miserable gits.

newholgate Posted on 24/8 8:51
re: That 12th man card display was chit

There was nothing wrong with the card display. If it wasn't all displayed, that doesn't make the card display schit, it makes the supporters who couldn't be bothered to get their lazy @rses to their seats to show a bit of support to their theam the ones who are schit.

Check out stonehouse's video on another thread. Not the best clarity (no offence meant there stonehouse, you did a great job capturing all those videos), not all the north stand fans holding up cards, yet you can clearly see that it says 86 in one corner, 06 in the other and shows a person holding a scarf that says reborn across it. What's schit about that?

Whats all this about it didn't work very well? Seems to have worked perfectly for me. I'm sure better pictures will surface soon that'll show this.

The only disappointment for me was the fact that MOTD put the Chelsea team graphic slap bang over it instead of showing it to the country. (perhaps next time some liaison with MOTD would be needed to try and get it shown)

But I thought it was a great job by the 12th man.

Incidentally Mox, we did liase with MOTD believe it or not! The producers came over to speak to us as we'd finished, and asked when it would be going up, what it would say etc, and they said theyd try to get it shown and the awareness raised.

The match was on Canal + here in Finland and the card display was shown quickly, to be honest I didn't have time to figure out (during those two seconds) what the text was but anyway it looked good. You don't see that kind of stuff too often in the Premiership matches.

Canal + has some technical problems during the match, there was about 15 minutes without any commentary so all the chats sounded louder than usually. Or maybe you just were singing loud enough?

In short: looked good, sounded good, felt good.

number_10 Posted on 24/8 10:40

I think the "REBORN" part was a bit ambitious. No one where I was sitting (South West) could figure out what it said. And I could see the Chelsea fans pointing, scatching their heads and trying to work it out as well. Other than that, it looked great.

Fine job boys but next time it needs a bit more planning.

Next time try and give pre warning to the club so maybe the match before they can get Page to say please come early to the next game and get to your seats early(I know this was impossible this time) and maybe you could try and persuede them to close the bars 5 mins earlier so people arent queuing and miss it.

re: That 12th man card display was chit

"Fine job boys but next time it needs a bit more planning.

Next time try and give pre warning to the club "

This was well planned. The club knew about it well in advance. It has had press coverage for a few weeks now and Mark Page kept announcing for half an hour or so beforehand that people needed to be in their seats early.

Could you tell us what else we could do for next time please RaveMaster?

Oh, and btw, 'girls' were also involved in this event.

Plans for another one? How about a simple C'mon Boro!

newholgate Posted on 24/8 16:08
re: That 12th man card display was chit

It wasn't too complicated. It just needed everyone to co-operate, like they did with the display at the Steaua game, by getting to theur seats early and holding their card up, plus the one next to them if the seat was empty.

I was shocked at the number of people sat near me refusing to hold cards up. How can they call themselves supporters when they won't take part in a simple task to pay tribute to such an important event in the history of their club.

re: That 12th man card display was chit

Was really difficult to make it out from where I was in the West Lower. Maybe slightly too complicated. Eindhoven looked better because it was simple. All in all though a good effort.

And I mean the design, not the instructions of 1) Hold Up Card. 2) Put Card Down.

--- Post edited by Winston_Spangler on 24/8 16:28 ---

newholgate Posted on 24/8 16:27
re: That 12th man card display was chit

BoroPhil, the only thing I think that could have made it a less complicated design in terms of reading it, would have been to have the scarf, and therefore the word 'reborn', straight instead of on an angle.

But in terms of how that looked overall, I think you would loose a lot of the effect by doing that.

If people think this was too complicated, you should have seen some of the designs; one involved having to reverse/flip the cards to give 2 messages. Way too complicated for the average Teessider!

chboro Posted on 24/8 16:30
re: That 12th man card display was chit

The main problems were the red bits below the E and B - if they had been held up by everyone it would have been clear.

BenJammin Posted on 24/8 16:40
re: That 12th man card display was chit

How about some of them big banners like the Sevilla fans had in Eindhoven? Less time to set up and it won't matter if some people aren't in their seats when they go up. Could also have one in each stand (maybe cover up some of the empty seats!)

Not quite sure what would go on them mind.

capio Posted on 24/8 16:42
re: That 12th man card display was chit

The people involved, why was it not clear? was it just because too any people were not there, or was it so complxe that it was hard to see from a distance anyway?

The uefa semi final one was fantastic, very clear.

neiltrodden Posted on 24/8 17:02
re: That 12th man card display was chit

As I posted last night, the text at an angle plus the reduced size of it compared to the Eindhoven display meant that any cards not held up or empty seats would damage the effect. That was one of the simpler designs too. Well we'll learn from it and future ones can hopefully be clearer.

Even on the cabbie thread where this started I didn't do it, just questioned someone.

Lazy gobshiite.

As for cyber agression, where? I'm not going round saying I'd like to smash people on the head with a sledgehammer like you am I?

Gutless hypocrite.

Yep, that was my daughter. I had a pass, but when I told her I was coming, she wanted to tag along to help / complain.

Calm down son, you're a middle-aged man losing his temper on the internet.
I am sure there will be a 16 year old girl along for you to bully soon.

Anyway, I have to go, go have a tommy tank buddah, you may not feel so aggresive.

After reading captain5's incredibly rude (some things never change) 'Beaker' posts this morning, I kind of guessed that might have been you. Hello.

Im sorry I didnt see you, I would have come over and had a chin wag. I didnt realise you were there, I seemed to have cards on the brain.

It was a birrova nightmare, wasn't it? Next time we raise a pot full of money I reckon we should just blow the lot on buying Franck back.

re: That 12th man card display was chit

It didnt quite work did it - none of us up in the west stand could read what it said - perhaps keeping it secret was not such a good idea because once you know it says reborn you can sort of work it out. I still thinl it was good b ut perhaps future designs could have the letters bigger and overall be less complex.

sasboro Posted on 24/8 18:52
re: That 12th man card display was chit

its looks as if from the pictures the cards werent quite laid out properly and mixed up, or avoid colours that clash with the colour of the home kit or seats

It was very good you moaning fookers. Well done to all involved.

Winston_Spangler Posted on 24/8 19:58
re: That 12th man card display was chit

I think that basically the more complex you make the design if a couple of cards are missing it has a bigger impact.

thornabyred Posted on 24/8 20:54
re: That 12th man card display was chit

well done for the effort all of you.
people in the NW upper around me obviously did not know what it said
but a lot were asking if the west stand or even just the corner could have something for one of the games.Could be a way of cutting costs, smaller shows and save the cards for next one.

rozi Posted on 24/8 21:01
re: That 12th man card display was chit

I'm with all the positive comments on here, well done to all concerned and many thanks for all your hard work. When Pigbag started I was holding up 3 cards as the fans from either side hadn't arrived yet - they turned up just in time to take over from me. . Tell you what mind, it doesn't half hurt when those aeroplanes crack you on the back of your head.

newholgate Posted on 24/8 21:07
re: That 12th man card display was chit

thornabyred, it would be great if cards could be saved for the next display, but unfortunately we have a lot of selfish fans, who don't give a damn about the fact that people have put time, effort and money into things such as the display. They just rip up the cards or make them into paper planes to chuck around, without even considering that someone might just want them back.

The display ast night took 6,000 cards, costing about £400. If people were a bit more thoughtful and left the cards to be collected back in at the end, we could probably reuse cards a few times in a season, therefore relying less on donations to purchase more cards.

If only...

re: That 12th man card display was chit

They cut it out of the footage on US tv (at least I didn't notice it) but the pix look pretty good on here. You lot SOUNDED great on the box, though.

For me, the fact that someone got off their hairy harses and did something is worthy beyond praise. I am amazed at the number of people on here who bemoan the lack of atmosphere at the Riverside and then when someone tries to do something about it, they get moaned at too!

capio Posted on 24/8 21:18
re: That 12th man card display was chit

newholgate, if you can clear it with the club, I am sure some local company will agree to pay for the cards as long as they their company logo on it.
Maybe a permanent large card or plastic badge with their logo on in one corner.

You are desperate not to be seen as a moaning, miserable get after your negative post, aren't you?

We like you, its allright, don't worry too much.

re: That 12th man card display was chit

Buddah the people who know me will know I couldn't give two rats testicles how I am viewed.
I didn't think the card display was great, as it was hard to read, but because I had a few beers I was too harsh and unfair on the people who made the effort.

They don't need my comments to give them a kick in the teeth after their hard work, so I aplogise to anybody involved in the car display if I offended you.

I dropped it ages ago, buddah seems intent in starting it at every opportunity, a few years ago I would have enjoyed it, but I am too old for that crap now and buddah is old enough to be my father me, so he should just move on.

As stated its tedious, we both have our views, that is it.

Give it a rest.

As you said, I have to defend meself, you can't be assed to find the evidence, as there is none.

OverTheTopAussie Posted on 25/8 5:05
re: That 12th man card display was chit

All the positive ideas posted above made me think. How about this:-

Get two or four corporate sponsors - small logo on the two bottom corners (of both sides?). Might raise enough money to get a set of double sided, laminated cards. One side white, one side red.

One small sentence "Please pass the cards to the left to the end of your row after the display." Person at the end of the row puts the pile under their seat.

Corporate sponsors pay for the extra cost, even get the corp sponsors announced over the speaker?

Lamination makes aeroplaning them harder and maybe might help people not think of them as junk. Means cards not damaged by accident, only vandalism.

Announcement over the loud speaker at the end of the display to say pass along to your left.

NH. its a pity a lot of people have to play at plane throwers.
From my perch in the NW corner I could see planes being made, cards either ripped up or just shot on the floor.

Hows the backache,I was on the last one doing the laggy bands on the seats and you dont realise the slight angle you are bent at going along the row until you get to the end and try to straighten up.

thornabyred, my back is ok, but at the moment, I have a slipped disc and trapped nerve in my neck and tendon damage in my shoulder, but I'm not prepared to let it stop me doing things.

I really suffered yesterday mind and its still pretty pad this morning

Well done to The 12th Man, i think the reason people were in there seats early against Steau was the fact the Concorse bars were'nt allowed to sell beer.
