Dance Music - when was it best?

Stepper T says 89-92

I say mid-nineties

When was dance music at its peak?

Stepper_T Posted on 1/9 22:20
re: Dance Music - when was it best?

I give you:

Richie Rich - Salsa House
Frankie Knuckles - Your Love
Ce Ce Rogers - Some Day
K Klass - rhythm Is a mystery

I could go on.

Sceptic_Frank Posted on 1/9 22:27
re: Dance Music - when was it best?

A_New_Era, that is a list of awful cheesiness!

86-89 when Detroit techno was setting the standard. Carl Craig, Derrick May, Juan Atkins. The originators and all still around and respected today.

Boro_inleeds Posted on 1/9 22:32
re: Dance Music - when was it best?

Yep seconded Stepper

I would like to add Last Rhythm to the list and Bedrock - For What we dream of.

Ah K-Klass were just the business, went to see them one New years Eve in Leeds.

That era just cannot be bested, end of thread

Fact (wink)

Edit
Of course the real answer is it is whatever era we were each clubbing it the hardest in because the sounds from whatever era that was becomes the defining tunes for us.

Its fairly hard to pin it down, because when most townies were shunting about to the likes of White Lines, you had travellers who were dancing about like a crop circle (see this years Big Brother winner)

re: Dance Music - when was it best?

I think that dance music peaked in the mid 90's with
Shamen
K-Klass
Leftfield
Matt Darey
Prodigy
808 State

You then had the cheese like
Blackbox
Ultra-Nate
N-Trance
Alison Limerick

I used to love dance music and have loads of it on my hard drive but my tastes have mellowed over the years !!!

Boro_inleeds Posted on 1/9 23:00
re: Dance Music - when was it best?

KLF are in the right 89-92 era and I thought they were great but Venga Boys ?? Can't get much further apart than that.
Surely candidates for the most repetitive tennis ball music most annoying crap ever.

Stepper_T Posted on 1/9 23:01

Yeah, started going as soon as I was 17, but got snuck into the Butterloggies by Brian's brother when I was far too young, remember seeing people actually running on to the dance floor when Huey dropped Chime

I've got most of the tunes mentioned on this thread on viynl (sp)

Haven't got any Havana mixes, but I've got a DVD with loads of Hacienda'89 Mixes, and various other things like Sasha at Shelleys, I might even have a tape of Adam Embleton DJing at Flixx in 89

Did you go to the Cornerhouse much in the late 90's as I used to DJ there?

A New Era, how old are you, I don't mean to patronise but if you compared the 2 periods the early days blew everything away, people queuing to get into clubs that open at 10pm at 7, 700 people in a club liscenced for 250 with a queue stretching down Linthorpe road, getting home as the sun comes up on a Sunday Morning and your only thought is what the DJ's going to play next Saturday.

If you'd been there you'd understand

re: Dance Music - when was it best?

33 next week, house music changed my life,

I feel sorry for the yoofs of today, it used to be that something new would come through every 10-12 years to define a generation, there was rock and roll in the 50's, soul in the 60's, punk in the 70's, acid house in the 80's, but nothing since then, today's yoofs seem to be dfined by what heat magazine / mtv tells them. Each generation had its way of dressing, dancing and talking, now its just what US marketing execs decide

thats not good

re: Dance Music - when was it best?

I'm 25 but I came to the early stuff later when I realised that was where it all originated... and was the best stuff!

Liked all the KLF, Bizarre Inc era stuff when I was at school. Worshipped early Prodigy! Had a Happy Hardcore spell (we all make mistakes) Progressed onto to Drum and Bass. Used to travel miles to go to Metalheadz / Logical Progression etc. Then Bugged Out! at University.

Golden days.

I agree Marshall. Me and my mate who I always clubbing with regularly lamented the fact that we missed the Acid House boom. The thought of meeting up in a field for secret gigs when it was all new must have been so exciting.

Just about latched onto the beginning of Jungle, that was atleast a new exciting musical movement. Sadly much of that is now crap.

rothwellranger - did you prefer the dance scene when you were clubbing or dj'ing best?

Boro_inleeds Posted on 2/9 0:45
re: Dance Music - when was it best?

Yep you are right Marshall. If it's not celebrity then nobody is interested. I fear for what is next, "Celebrities pets pass water, while dancing in a camper van, on ice" perhaps.

When you started having to wear the right clothes to get in clubs the bubble burst for me and I had to stop going. Suddenly your labels were more important than the tunes and the scene as it was died. Of course you will remember when it was just jeans, T shirt and trainers and a quick glance at your eyes by the security to see if you could get in.

Stood in the queue with your mates repeatedly saying "look at the floor, look at the floor" as you approached the door.

Ah (insert your own nostalgic phrase)

re: Dance Music - when was it best?

Boro_inLeeds, I used to quite like a dress code when people who were in the know looked different, Destory, Michiko, Early Duffer etc, now the only difference between clothes in Psyche and River Island is the price.

I do remeber being stood outside the Hacienda, and seeing the glass in the windows of the adjacent buldings shaking with the bass, if you put a glass on the table it would dance its way to the floor

re: Dance Music - when was it best?

I was only a kid during both the periods, but from what ive heard the music in the mid 90s just had an edge to it, i can imagine that coming on in clubs now and the place going wild, how it should be instead of this new era of dance which just isnt the same, too many artists bringing out "dance" tunes and then singing all the way through it

Its much more about the music with dance, the less singing the more you can enjoy the tune

Yes it is Frank, I warmed up for him once at the Cornerhouse in about 1998, and he was an absoloute tool, he wanted to take one of my records off me (it was by Scott and Scooby from Shindig) so that he could sue the producers as he claimed it contained an unauthorised sample of one of his tracks, after I'd finished playing, he kept telling me to go and get him drinks and food (Steak potatoe chips!!!). It ended up with him walking outearly and me going back on, and with John Gol and Brian Andrews (SP) giving him a cheque payable to "Marshall Jaffacake" and telling him where to go.

I know what you mean about "Crasher Kids" I was at Cream in about 1999 when Ashley Beedle played Robert Owen's "I'll be your friend" as his first tune, coming on after Tiesto, the place went mad, apart from a load of home counties doyles with spikey hair and glow sticks who absoloutely crapped them sleves, it was like Boro had scored a goal

re: Dance Music - when was it best?

I've heard that he is a bit of a prat. I used to know a couple of the guys who put on Chibuku in Liverpool and they booked him and said he was really obnoxious. He also fooked about every third mix.

A new era, if you're into the tunes you listed, you may not like the older stuff. The new stuff is all about a catchy hook / vocal and they often just stick an identikit beat behind. Back in the day (I'm rolling with the cliches now!) it was all about how a tune was contsructed. The kick, bass, hi-hats layered over one another. It's subtle but if you really get into and listen carefully it becomes a joy when you get a great tune. I'd recommend some Hardfloor stuff as they combined catchy, bumpy beats and hooks with great production.

Great shout from Rothwell, a classic example of what I was on about. That tune builds and builds...

I would say around 94-97. Anything from the early 90's to 99 is pretty good although I do like the 'modern' dance music as well.

More hardcore I think than dance.

Just like Forever young.

Yup, you're right, I only thought of it because of a massive flashback I had to Club M, and to a youthful naivety where anything with a fast beat was dance and happy hardcore was just the name of the artist.

Ahhh.....those were the days....

re: Dance Music - when was it best?

Sceptic Frank and Marshall Jaffacake, you seem to have hit the nail on the head more than others, I can relate to so much of what you are saying!

I'm still relatively young in the dance music world (22) and have been goin out for about 5 years, mostly in leeds since I moved there 4 years ago for uni but before that at sugarshack (which no-one seems to have mentioned in this thread at all even though it was basically my introduction to dance and I seen some of the best DJ's there in their peak 99 -2002 such as sasha, digweed, sander kleinenberg, steve lawlers sessions (anyone??), lee burridge, oakey, lisa loud etc....)

I agree with sceptic franks comment, it is about which scene u grow up with which is why tunes to me which i heard when i first started going out (KOT - finally, Alan braxe - intro, thomas bangalter - together) mean more 2 me now because they were what got me in2 the dance scene in the 1st place than if i heard them 2day when i would dismiss them as funky house cheese!

also, re: detroit techno, seen derick may last year @ back2 basics in leeds and he was as amazing as everyone says, really journey thru music for 4 hours (very cliched but it was), he even dropped pigabg in the middle of his set(no s**t!!) and it didnt sound cheesy because he'd played so much stripped down techno throughout his set, best dj set i have ever seen IMO.

Dance music HASN'T died out as much as people are saying, fair enough the big room superclub buzz has had it's day (farewell Gatecrasher dont come back) but I like the fact that you have to seek out new dance music now rather than it being on a plate which means it keeps the scene more underground and fresh.. I have been going out in leeds for the past 4 years and have had the opportunity to see well respected dj's such as digweed, richie hawtin, billy nasty and andy weatherall as well as the nu-breed such as magda, ricardo villalobos and troy pierce at clubs like technique, back 2 basics and superconductor; if dance music is not as good as it used 2 be nobody has told me!

acklam lad - what type of dance do they play, the old or new stuff?

Sceptic_Frank Posted on 3/9 10:56
re: Dance Music - when was it best?

Onejamiepollock, you're a man of good taste! I used to love Richie Hawtin, all the Plasticman stuff.

The paradox with being into the underground scene is that you want people to appreciate it as you do, yet at the same time you love the exclusivity of being into something that very few other people get.

I used to spend hours trying to get my mates to understand and appreciate my music collection but as soon a track got any sort of commercial exposure I was like 'aaagh get it off the radio, that's my tune and you're going to ruin it!!!"

Yanski Posted on 3/9 11:54
re: Dance Music - when was it best?

If the question is when was dance music at its peak - probably about 10 years ago in that sales of dance music were at their highest - even if if it was all cheese.

If you asking when was it best, I agree with onejamiepollock, the quality is still there if you look in the right places, and has never gone away.

Carl Craig is my all time number one but there are always new artists developing and pushing new sounds. Drexciya are also up there - proper electro (not this electro house crap they talk about now).

My most recent faves are artists such as Villalobos, and anything on his Cadenza label, Luciano, Mathew Jonson and Claro Intelecto.

Alex Smoke is another superb new artist who is classically trained which I like as it tends to put two fingers up to the argument that dance music is talentless 8ollox.

martynburke Posted on 3/9 12:53
re: Dance Music - when was it best?

I would strongly recommend Danny Rampling's final mix compilation 'Break For Love' for anyone loving this thread.

For example...
Frankie Knuckles: The Whistle Song
Paul Simpson: Musical Simpson
Mandy Smith: I Just Can't Wait (Balearic Remix)
William Pitt: City Lights
It's Immaterial: Driving Away From Home
KOT: Finally
Gat Decor: Passion (One of my personal favourites)

ACIEED!!

onejamiepollock Posted on 3/9 22:14
re: Dance Music - when was it best?

totally agree with the 'being part of the underground' thing, i guess i kind of like the fact that i'm into stuff which the mainstream don't get and thats what's so good going to sweaty techno clubs, you spend your day working away wanting 2 talk about tunes/dj sets etc but know you can't because you'd just get a blank stare, then stepping into a club where all of a sudden there is 500 odd people all on the same vibe bouncing about, you feel part of something which matters to you which i guess is the same as the punks/football hooligans thing (not saying i condone it but if you get my point..) -

yaksi - every artist you've mentioned i'm really into, it's a shame nothing like this ever goes on in middlesbrough, if it did about 10 people would turn up!

**shameless plug** if you're into drexicya, claro intelecto and 'proper electro', i play electro and theres a new mix on my myspace that you'd probably be into, www.myspace.com/ohmzb , have a listen and let us know what u think ;-)

Sceptic_Frank Posted on 3/9 22:49
re: Dance Music - when was it best?

OJP, downloaded your mix just taking a listen now. Seems like you've already impressed a few people!

I used to live with a guy who was bang into electro. He sold his entire record collection on ebay and some of the Egyptian Lover stuff went for silly money. He also had a very early Dan Curtain tune with a starting price of 4.99 and someone very kindly emailed him to say there were only 5 copies ever pressed and it was wortha round 300!

Have to say I don't listen to as much techno/electro stuff these days. I've got heavily into Hip Hop (again awfully represented by mainstream sh*tt)and what is loosely termed broken beat but really just takes in the best bits of every genre (Best example is Benji B's show on 1xtra).

As for Carl Craig, Climax and Desire are two of my all time favourite tunes. More people with good taste on here than I imagined...

BoroandProud Posted on 4/9 2:42
re: Dance Music - when was it best?

Totally agree with Acklam_Lad about Retro and Lovefunky, they're both unreal nights out. I've posted a link for the Retro Website further up. If you click on 'Retro Cd's' you can go onto each CD and it shows you the songs on each of them. That should give you an idea of the type of music played in there.
I'm also quite partial to a bit of Hed Kandi these days.

David Guetta - Just a little more love
Hardsoul - Back to you
Chosen few - Nobody's business
Loverush - Same old thing
Jimi Polo - Better days

There's a few more to get the juices going
