| Henry Porter in the Observer | |
Fresh from his e-mail argument with Blair HP is opening a second front in his defence of democracy and denouncing the US intellectual justification of torture. Go Henry.

Torture is relative, locking a bloke up for life without any chance of parole could be classed as torture, is it wrong? His point on the level of terrorists deaths is valid, its the threat of death the creates the problem. On the whole agree with most of his premise, the Palestian problem was a problem in 2006BC.

I think his main point - and he has been banging away at it for two years now - is the contradictions inherent in the current political strategy of "to defend our political liberty we must take it away." In his three months exchange of e-mails with Blair the PM was not willing to make an intellectual, theoretical defence of that position merely talking about practicalities and the possibility of more terror. In America more people are ready to have a crack at unravelling it but have tied themselves up in knots. I don't think Porter is particularly a leftie, or a dissident or even a loose cannon. I think he just wants the people who are taking decisions to square the circle.
