I think if we click we could have a competitive team (not good enough to win anything mind). We're just lacking a lot of confidence at the moment no matter what noises the camp makes.

We need to start playing specialist bowlers like panesar and hoggard rater than jacks of all trades I feel.

Why the fook has Mal Loye of Lancs never played for England?

Ray..think you are wasting your time pal I think that you me and 9 others off this board could beat this England team, anyway it's not real cricket is it?..fraid I dont have much time for the pyjama game....Brisbane November 23rd this is the real deal mate.

amelvg1 Posted on 5/9 13:40
re: ENGLAND V Pakistan.

mal loye is just what we need an explosive batsman to open the batting to make best use fo the fielding restrictiions in the 1st 20 overs. every team has this sort of player in the openers.
australlia- ghilchrist
sri lanka- jayasuriya
west indies- gayle
new zealand- astle

and so on.

if all our players were fit i think we would have a very good 1 day team.

To be fair Trescothick is that explosive type of batter. Strauss isn't really suited to one day cricket.

A big scored from KP is overdue, but our bowlers just don't look capable of taking regular wickets to peg the batters back or keep it tight to create some pressure.

We couldn't defend Australazia in Risk with that bowling line up. Saj just isn't upto one day cricket I don't think he's manage to go for less than six an over yet. He's got potential but it could be ruined by him getting carted around every oneday game.

It was the shot of a man seriously out of form.

Capybara Posted on 5/9 14:36
re: ENGLAND V Pakistan.

I'm with Celestron on this. I really have very little time for the one-day stuff. They have to change the rules to make the game more exciting every time teams discover tactics to neutralise the last time they had to change the rules to make the game more exciting. This has made the game unbalanced, unfathomable and dull. Very rarely do you get a good exciting game these days - the recent Gillette Cup Final was a rare exception and it was the fact that it was a low-scoring game which made it so. The authorities have failed with their project and so the logical extension is Twenty20. Stick a few cameras in the changing rooms and bogs and there you will have it. Reality 'cricket' for the low attention span, hard of thinking, celebrity brother popstar island generation. Roll on the real stuff.

then...

"Ouch - Strauss smashes an Asif delivery back down the pitch and seemingly straight into Bell's most private area. Bell hits the deck like a felled tree. When he gets up, his face is the colour of Ribena. Strauss is laughing. Thanks skipper..."

once again ENgalnd turn a promising start into a mid innings crisis. AT least KP avoided Asif getting him out. Big responsibility on Collingwood to bat through the rest of the innings. Not sure Dampwinkle and Ricky Clarke quite cut it at this level.

Yes a lot better really but plenty of room for improvement .

Stepper_T Posted on 5/9 22:47
re: ENGLAND V Pakistan.

Most certainly Ray, the injuries we have got came at a really bad time, didnt they? After last summer and with The ashes coming up. With a fully fit squad we could compete in ODI's too i believe.

Stepper_T Posted on 5/9 22:48
re: ENGLAND V Pakistan.

And I have to add, Ray, i dont see any County Cricket to evaluate players other than internationals.

Boro_till_I_fry Posted on 5/9 22:51
re: ENGLAND V Pakistan.

How come Harmison isn't playing - is he injured??
Also, why no Hoggard??

ray192 Posted on 5/9 22:53
re: ENGLAND V Pakistan.

Well Flintoff is a major loss to us with him we most probably have won today but thats life.

We must regroup and come out fighting .

ray192 Posted on 5/9 22:56
re: ENGLAND V Pakistan.

B_T_I_F

Harmisson is injured yes and they never pick Hoggard in one day internationals god knows why.

speckyget Posted on 5/9 22:58
re: ENGLAND V Pakistan.

Sorry to be the cricketing equivalent of sasboro but Pakistan were well below par today. At the moment we are tinkering with the side in the most alarming manner. Bit of this, bit of that.

Gough? What was that for? Clarke? What's changed since he was ordinary before?

No problem in trying some youngsters prior to the World Cup - Broad was always going to get a go and has done pretty well. If experimentation is the aim, why not give Chris Tremlett a shot, or Onions from Durham?

And if we're trying to get a side settled, where the hell is Hoggard? The (vain) struggle Strauss had to find a bowler who wouldn't bowl leg stump pies in those last four/five overs was embarrassing.

Duncout, etc.

Cobain_94 Posted on 5/9 22:59
re: ENGLAND V Pakistan.

I assumed Hoggard must be injured. It's baffling he's not in the side if fit.

ray192 Posted on 5/9 23:04
re: ENGLAND V Pakistan.

Hoggy is not injured as far as i know, but they pick him for O.D.I's dont know why .

ray192 Posted on 5/9 23:06
re: ENGLAND V Pakistan.

Also at this moment in time i would drop Trescothick for M.Loye of Lancashire .

Boro_till_I_fry Posted on 5/9 23:08
re: ENGLAND V Pakistan.

I heard a rumour he was being saved for the tests, but inthat case, why play any of our test team??
He did play in the last WC though - I saw highlights of the Eng - Pak game on Sky when we wom and Hoggy was a bowler.

ray192 Posted on 5/9 23:13

ray192 Posted on 6/9 8:54
re: ENGLAND V Pakistan.

Well certainly on current form he deserves to be out of the team, but you could be right he has got a lot on his mind.

T4Tomo Posted on 6/9 9:02
re: ENGLAND V Pakistan.

Fletcher reckons Hoggy gets carted around a bit on flat tracks or when the ball isn't swinging and is only effective with a new ball (preferably a red one).

However he has to be a better bet that Saj Mahmood, whilst quick his control is appalling. They'd have been better off giving Yardy another game rather than Clarke, having two spinners might have helped rather than yet another fast medium bowler aiming at the batsmans legs.

Dampwinkle had a good game - there's one positive from the match,

ray192 Posted on 6/9 9:55
re: ENGLAND V Pakistan.

T4T

I agree completely . And as for Mahmood never good enough at this level .

Stuar_Tripley Posted on 6/9 10:03
re: ENGLAND V Pakistan.

If you ask any England player whether they would rather win the Ashes or the World Cup this winter, to a man they would say the Ashes. Therein lies the problem, we don't take one-day cricket anywhere near as seriously as tests.

Look at the way Harmison mysteriously goes injured everytime a ODI series starts...he's being kept back for the tests.

after the last world cup in 2003, apparently Fletcher had a plan to ensure we would be ready to challenge for the 2007 world cup. well we're less than 6 months away and must have given near on 10 international debuts to players this year....i know we've had injuries, but there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to our one-day strategy.

Compare Pakistan's batting line-up...Younis, Yousuf, Inzy and Afridi with our bits and pieces effort. Our bowling attack is nowhere near experienced enough, and as for brining back Darren Gough...that's a joke. the guy was a legend, but he's had his time....and the mere fact he was recalled is symptomatic of the dearth of decent options we have in the bowling dept for one dayers!

ray192 Posted on 6/9 10:12
re: ENGLAND V Pakistan.

S_T

It's a well known fact that we dont treat O.D.I as we do test cricket,as Test Cricket is the proper game were a batsman builds his innings and just doesn't go out and swing the bat,and a bowler can have the luxury of setting what field he and the captain like to a batsman with no restriction.

Capybara Posted on 6/9 10:19
re: ENGLAND V Pakistan.

(apart from the number of fielders behind square on the leg side)

There was a discussion about this on Saturday on the wireless while they were watching the covers come on and off. The consensus was what Trippers said about how seriously we take it. But the consensus was also that we should take it more seriously. Nah. 'Power plays' FFS.

ray192 Posted on 6/9 10:21

Capy

I agree it's not cricket .

Stuar_Tripley Posted on 6/9 10:26
re: ENGLAND V Pakistan.

i'm still scarred from watching Andy Bichel's 6 sailing over my head and out of the ground off Jimmy Anderson's penultimate over in Port Elizabeth at the last world cup.....they were 135/8 needing 202 and England blew it!!!!!!!!!!! bloody Bichel and Bevan!

ray192 Posted on 6/9 10:51
re: ENGLAND V Pakistan.

Bevan

He was a great one day batsman because he could see as side home without panicking .

donttellthemisses Posted on 6/9 10:55
re: ENGLAND V Pakistan.

Bevan
best i ever seen, would bowl as well

amelvg1 Posted on 6/9 11:05
re: ENGLAND V Pakistan.

jimmy anderson. forgot all about him. hes a quality o.d.i bowler. is he still injured?

Stuar_Tripley Posted on 6/9 11:06
re: ENGLAND V Pakistan.

he was class. Lehmann as well, and Ponting and Gilchrist...damn it, they're all good!!

Bichel batting at no.10 showed how deep their batting order was though. came on to bowl when england were scoring 6 an over and ended up taking 7 wkts....came in to bat with 2 wkts remaining and aus needing 7 and over to win and ended up winning the game with Bevan!!

Jimmy Anderson has just come back from injury, should be fit for the ICC trip.

In all fairness though on the O.D.I circuit most countrys have played over double if not triple then amount of games we have.
