| FAO: Guitar Boffins | |
Two things really: I'm about to start setting money aside to buy an electric guitar, I want a good one so I was looking at Fender guitars. Came across this site the prices seem stupidly low for Strats and Telecasters. Is there something I'm missing or are the deals really that good? Any other recomendations in the £200 - £300 range. I'd want it to be an all round guitar really, I enjoy playing power chords but am just starting to get to grips with improvising my own melodies using the blues scale. 2nd thing is can anyone please recomend any good blues tracks to download that I could improvise a lead over the top of?

They are not strictly Fenders, but sort of a sister make Squire. They are like the Epiphone of Gibson, technically a Fender, but just not the same...

Aye thats right,If you have the time I'd get yourself down to Soundcontrol on portrack lane. At the moment they have a sale on and you might be able to pick up some decent bargins there, they usually have pretty good prices on the good Epiphones there aswell.

My advice on buying a guitar is to go and try some out in a shop. Not all guitars are made equal. I've got a strat copy (a tokai) and I'm lucky, it's just a nice guitar. As for tracks to improv over, I'd just record my own 12 bar blues onto the pc and loop it!

Thanks both of you. Was going to try them out in the shop just looking online to get a rough idea of the prices. Good idea about the recording my own and then looping. I don't have a mic for my PC at the minute though and I suppose I'd need some software or could I do it in Windows XP?

For some reason my previous post didnt work, Have a look on here, but like Neil said its best to go down, like i said Soundcontrol just off portrack lane is probably best bet, the staff are really helpful and know what they are talking about. *Link should say despite* --- Post edited by Reizigers_Lips on 9/9 0:53 ---

Fender of course are worth a try, just bear in mind that quality levels vary from instrument to instrument especially with the Mexican (standard) models that are near your price range, so try a few. Also worth tryin as well, I'd say, are Epiphone, for both their Les Pauls and SGs, and the PRS SE series, which are some rather good guitars (their main range are beautiful guitars, probably a match for Gibson, and a la Epiphone for Gibson and Squire for Fender, the SE range is the little brother so to speak, still bloody good guitars though.) Schecter might also be worth a look, Sound Control are their only UK dealer and they have quite a varied range, most of it edging towards the rockier side of things but they are rather nice guitars.

This is a great shop. Every guitar they sell is inspected and set up by a pro guitar technician (no guitar leaves the store with the factory settings) and the prices are good.

Thanks for all the help, I'll miss the sale at sound control by the looks of it but will have a look in there when I come to buy.

Have a Gibson Les Paul myself, and bought my son an ESP for xmas last year, his guitar is far easier to play, wouldn't have believed it, but the best advice would be to sit down and try a few out. You do get what you pay for though...

The shop (or somewhere like it) is where my mate got his Gibson S.G custom from, and it is brilliant, they changed all the pick-ups and altered the tone for what he wanted, as i remember it was pretty pricey though around £1,500 however that is probably because its a fantastic guitar!
