| Colouring the Barnet | |
I've been dyeing my hair for about 30 years now and getting a bit fed up of it. The trouble is if I don't do it I don't look like me! What is an appropriate age for a guy to stop doing it? How do you cope with people not recognising you, or lokking at you in a strange way?

| re: Colouring the Barnet | |
approximately 30 years ago, is when you should have stopped. Men don't dye their hair !!!

If you really have been dying your hair for 30 years, you should be used to people looking at you in a strange way.

Personally, I would rather shave my head than have grey hair.

Grey hair can look great (on a man, that is - rarely on a female).

I think you will find that most men of my age dye their hair

Hair dying is for woofters

Not all of us look like Richard Gere but! I'm more Brad Pitt myself!?

I am rapidly approaching the half century mark. I am not a woofter.

| re: Colouring the Barnet | |
Surely it must be obvious to people who know you, after all you don't see many if any blokes of your age with no grey hair.
| zoec Posted on 11/9 13:44 | |
| re: Colouring the Barnet | |
What colour do you dye it, then?
| Nedkat Posted on 11/9 13:46 | |
| re: Colouring the Barnet | |
Pink .. | |

I remember one man I used to work with - he was in his early sixties and looked quite distinguished with his white hair. Then he married a girl 30 years his junior and turned up for work one day with his hair dyed jet black. It was a bit startling to say the least. --- Post edited by zoec on 11/9 13:49 ---

Nothing wrong with dyeing your hair, especially if you start going grey at 15 like me. Nobody ever notices that I have dyed mine, but I never hide the fact, whenever anyone around me talks about the subject I openly admit to dyeing my hair.

| re: Colouring the Barnet | |
That's it though, it's so bloody obvious ! Men close to 50 usually have some grey creeping through. I'm 48 and my hair's been slowly going grey for years, moving from the salt and pepper into the silver fox stage. Men who dye their hair that ridiculous jet black, and walk about thinking they look natural, are simply delusion !!

I was 18 when I discovered my first grey hair but I never ever considered dying it. It does mean that I get characterised as a distinger from time to time but it's better than being called 'Wiggy' or 'Dyer', I suppose.

| re: Colouring the Barnet | |
I dyed mine once about 10 years ago (thirtyish). I was seeing a girl quite a lot younger than me and I didnt want her parents to think I was a pervert when I went to pick her up. I'm sure they just thought I was a pervert with dyed hair. Never again. Grey hair is fine on a bloke.

| re: Colouring the Barnet | |
I've never hidden the fact that I dye my hair and do it so that I still retains a little grey. I'm still quite handsome really, but I suppose I need to accept that I am getting older. I just don't want to shock the wife and children.

Let it go fella, you are not 18. Embrase your greyness. Think of the money you'll save and to be honest you should be grateful you've still got it to dye! Would you wear a wig? Same thing in my book. Keep it short and natural. Wooftah

New revelation....most women find grey hair very sexy. If you're even asking the question, then it's definitely time to stop colouring it. Gradually go lighter, go to the hairdressers and they will sort it out for you with lighter shades until you can allow your own to blend in and eventually replace the dye.

Dye it blond - tell them its a midlife crisis- then just let it grow out grey. woofter

| re: Colouring the Barnet | |
'go to the hairdressers and they will sort it out for you ' Thanks Curly. Obviously you think I'm a woofter too? I've never been to a hairdressers/barbers since I was a toddler. I might just take the plunge and go white, see how it goes. Will my sexiness quota increase though? I doubt it somehow.
| zoec Posted on 11/9 14:39 | |
| re: Colouring the Barnet | |
You haven't been to the hairdressers/barbers since you were a toddler? Is your hair really long as well as dyed? Definitely a woofer
| piggy_nichol Posted on 11/9 14:39 | |
| re: Colouring the Barnet | |
My barber tends to cut out the black hair and leave the grey. The stuff thats on the floor always looks much darker than the stuff left on my head.

| re: Colouring the Barnet | |
I'm going grey and thinning so I go to the barber and ask for USMC cut.

| re: Colouring the Barnet | |
No, I don't think you're a woofter at all. I'm giving you the best advice to successfully achieve a smooth transition from the colour you have now, to au naturel. You might think it a bit unmanly to go to the hairdressers, but it would be a lot better than going all sorts of different obvious hues (ala Philip Schofield) before you achieve your own colour. Either that or just shave the lot off and start again. I'll say it again, grey hair on men is verrrrry sexy.
| zoec Posted on 11/9 14:44 | |
| re: Colouring the Barnet | |
What's a USMC cut? I cut my own hair this weekend - didn't turn out too badly, all things considered.

Zoec, It means United States Marine Corp.

| re: Colouring the Barnet | |
MsCurly, you have persuaded me. I'm cutting out the colour later! I did it quite a few years back and everyone thought I'd dyed my hair, so I dyed it back cos I got sick of the comments.
| zoec Posted on 11/9 14:48 | |
| re: Colouring the Barnet | |
Kendal - Ah, right. The best cut if you're thinning. Nothing worse than a Charlton cut.

Grey hair may be sexy, and my own Barnet's been that way for years now. What's worse is the grey hairs slowly creeping into me chest hairs. They stand out like strange alien beings, who've landed on my chest during the night ...

What about Ear Hair. I was stood behind a bloke in WH Smith on Satder and he could have platted his ear hair.

I have one of them clipper things, and the missus gives me a good trim around me ears, and up the back of me neck, on a weekly basis.
