All we need to do is get some batting or bowling points early and then let it rain for the rest of the time

I am often wrong but it certainly looks like rain today here in Leeds.

re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

So win the toss and bat first then. 5 bonus points on offer. Only 3 for bowling.

I bet the ECB didn't think of this scenario when they decided on the points system. Whoever wins the toss will have an unfair advantage.

Stew

What your saying is correct really it's an unfair advantage but it's the same for both teams .

re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

Spoff

Why is it a batsmans game explain that to me please? .

Spoff_MFC Posted on 20/9 8:38
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

Batsmens game more often than not because it is more likely the wicket will be flat than seam or turn.

stewboss Posted on 20/9 8:40
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

You could say that its the same for all teams at the start of the season but this is going to the wire.

Slightly OT but what is the point of two divisions anyway?

Will either teams membership / revenue drop as a result of relegation? I doubt it. The ECB pays for the counties anyway. Is the standard of cricket higher? I doubt it. Last time I looked, the split of players in the England team was around 50-50. Can't be bothered to check it now. Also, some of the div 2 teams excel at one day cricket and vice versa.

stewboss Posted on 20/9 8:40

Spoff, that is a generalisation which clearly isn't true.

ray192 Posted on 20/9 8:50

That is true at the START of a game but what about on day three or four? .

Spoff_MFC Posted on 20/9 8:51
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

You could be right Stew.

I've seen no county cricket this season, only taken interest in Yorkshire results.

And to be honest my opinion is based on comments I have heard on TV/Radio or based on stuff I have read.

Subconcously I have probably listened to bowlers comments more than batters as I prefer bowling.

I'll be quiet now as I really have nothing constructive to add!

Capybara Posted on 20/9 9:02
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

Much depends on the weather and the pitch. If there aren't 400 runs in the pitch and it's going to rain it would be pointless batting if you win the toss. Yoe are likely to get three wickets for a bowling point more quickly than scoring two hundred runs. This is Headingley and a 10:30 start remember. One point and we're ahead.

Capybara Posted on 20/9 9:13
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

And, yes, the two division set-up as it stands is pretty pointless. All that being in the second division means is that you are not in with a chance of winning the championship that season. Still don't want to be relegated, though.

T4Tomo Posted on 20/9 9:15
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

they changed the bonus point system because more often than not bowling sides gain maximum bonus points (i.e they bowled a side out in 125 overs or however many it was) hence to differentiate a bit more they gave an extra point for better batting.

Conspiracy theorists would argue they did it to favour southern countiues like Surrey where the wickets generally have more runs in them!

Capy - unlesss the weather is horrendous then both sides are likely to complete their 1st innings hence you decide to bat or bowl depending on whether you think you'll get more bonus points in total that way. I would concur that it possibly better to bowl first unless it looks like a 400 run belter.

Theres an argument that says bowl first as then you know what 1st innings lead you have to beat. Also give you a chance of a sneaky declaration: If Durham make say 360 all out and we get to 351-7 on the third day with little prospect of a result other than a draw then we would declare to deny them the bonus point for the 9th wicket.

The other point I'd make that if a result is likely, with two leggies in the team then bowling fourth may have its advantages. Whether that outweighs the disadvantage of batting fisrt if its cloudy seaming and swinging is a question for the skipper!

re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

I remember reading Dick Blakey's book (a diary of a season, aptly named "Taking it from behind"), when he talks about the signing of Big Dazza. having just had Bev-Attack, apparently our team were waiting in the hotel about to meet Dazza, wondering what he would be like. He turned up with 20 Happy Meals from McDonalds for everyone and then they realised that he would fit right in

7_The_Informer Posted on 20/9 16:58
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

Although I nearly got hit by a flying blade during a Bev-Attack, I must say that Bevan had/has one of the fittest birds you are ever likely to see. She was amazing !! My mate knew some of the Surrey players and so during one Surrey match, we had seats in the pavilion sat with all the Surrey WAGS and I was a bit disappointed, none of them were a patch on the Yorkshire lasses. Mind you, Butcher's missus was Alec Stewarts sister and to be honest, it would be difficult to tell the two apart in a lineup ....

For the two stories .

Celestron Posted on 20/9 17:07
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

396-3...the fifth bonus batting point is only 4 runs away do we bat on until they take the fifth wicket and then declare thus denying them a sixth wicket and another bowling point or do we keep going until we hit the 1,000 mark and put them right out of it.

Capybara Posted on 20/9 17:08
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

Mr Informer, we are getting very close to that scenario you painted earlier on. If Yorkshire reach 400 they will have maximum batting points. Do they declare at the fall of the fifth wicket to ensure Durham get only one bowling point and make it more likely that Durham would actually have to win the game to avoid relegation?

Capy, Celestron, I think that we have to do that really. Although, of course, if Durham get max batting points then things could backfire, but I would take the risk to be honest, especially the way things are going ....

ray192 Posted on 20/9 17:15

A lot depends on the pitch, really. Is it a belter? And if two quick wickets were to fall now, for example, I am not so sure it would be a good idea as we are still on the first day. If we can get near 470 or 480 tomorrow morning, mind, a declaration would put great pressure on Durham. They would have to get a big score and quite quickly at that if they are going to get anything - they have to match Yorkshire on bonus points, remember, if they can get away with a draw - and that would mean they are more likely to lose wickets.

re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

Definately keep batting as then the pressure on Durham become immense if they are staring down the barrell of a 500 plus score as they can't afford to lose but also have to secure full batting points whilst conceding same bolwing points as they ahve gained.

Once we get past 130 overs then they can't get further bowling points. Also if we rack up a big first inning score a sneeky declaration ny them to prevent us scoring bowling points is no longer possible as that would risk them losing the game.

C'MON YORKS

stewboss Posted on 20/9 17:35
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

35 more overs to survive without losing more that two wickets would really put the boot in!

5 v 1

would give us a 3.5 pts advantage.

They would need to score a big total in the 1st innings.

CMON YORKS!!

Coincidentally, Ray, I have been around the Leeds area today.

Managed to call in for an hour between 4 and 5. Saw Dazza bring up his double ton with a straight six and Lumb get his 50 before I had to dash away. Lehmann seems to be playing on a different pitch to the rest. Rapid scoring, and it's not just biffing either, just perfect placement and solid defence mixed in with the odd brutal stroke.

That well-known Mackem Ottis Gibson was getting really narked - carted all over the park by Big Dazza!

I'd be tempted to declare if the 5th wicket goes down before the 130th over, but if it is a really good batting wicket, they could shaft us as someone mentioned yesterday. 350-2 would do that. Unlikely I know but needs considering.

That said we'll skittle them for less than 300 then bat out the last two days!!

Don't forget that George Herbert Hirst was an all-rounder, took 200 wickets in a season for Yorks on numerous occasions and was one in a long line of famous Slow Left Arm bowlers for Yorks. He is one of my heroes so to be honest, I could do with the convict retiring hurt before passing George's score ....

re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

If Yorks beat Durham or Durham beat Yorks, Notts stay up, regardless.

If it is a draw, the most points Durham can get out of the game now is 10. Taking them 1.5 ahead of Notts. So, Notts have 1 bowling point and therefore need 1 batting point to be sure of survival ...

It's a good stab Capy. Actually, it was a bit of a trick question, as the description fits both Wilfred Rhodes and George Herbert Hirst (who keeps the record, thankfully in my eyes, but still a big well done to Big Dazza thr Convict).

There's a lot of debate over who was better as their figures are very comparable (30 vs 34 batting average, 16 vs 18 bowling average). For me, I would probably give it to Wilfred, as his international record is slightly better (he went from batting at #11 in his first test to being a genuine opener ...).

That's a valid point Capy and I would agree if we were scratching around, but Guy and Lawson were scoring at 7 an over. Surely when you are scoring like that you put the runs on the board, just in case we have to bat again ....

Still, I have faith in Chalky. I am off to work now, so hopefully it will do the usual trick and bring a cluster of wickets ....

Anyone know what happens if teams finish level on points?

Capybara Posted on 21/9 16:17
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

It can't happen unless one of the teams gets a deduction of half a point in this match. However, if that were to happen, Durham would finish in the higher position by virtue of having won more games.

The_President Posted on 21/9 16:18
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

Found out myself...

1. most wins.
2. fewest losses
3. team achieving most points in contests between teams level on points
4. most wickets taken
5. most runs scored

I only ask as it looks like Notts are going to get beaten and as it stands they'll only make 1 bouns point. Giving them a total of 153.

We're currently on 148, so add 4 on for the draw that looks likely and that give us 152. So to finish above Notts we need two more bonus points, which will mean we finish above Durham anyway.

Wasn't that pointless?!?

The_President Posted on 21/9 16:21

It does mean that Notts are safe though, as Durham can't overtake them if it's a draw.

re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

Capy...To survive we had to win our last 2 games and as you say something extraordinary would have to happen to deny us in this one but lets remember last weeks game against Notts when we took the last Notts wicket with just a few minutes to spare and gained those 20 points if that wicket didnt go down then a draw is probaly all that Durham needed in this game.

GrumpyOldGit Posted on 21/9 21:52
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

Got there at 4pm again (handy being able to arrange work like this) and saw all except the first wicket go down. Rashid was getting lots of turn, and Lawson was getting bounce.

Chalky was setting very defensive fields - with over 600 on the board we had ONE slip and both a mid-on and mid-off, FFS!

Then Gillespie was brought back, took a wicket, and Kruis' 3 wickets in an over finished it off nicely - he really bent his back and nearly took one batsman's head off.

I've booked a day off tommorrow, so I'll be there early. Final day will be an all-day party (weather permitting) followed by a curry in Bradford. I'm looking forward to this.

re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

Duarham could still stay up but they have to get to 400 and draw (notts only took 1 bowling point bonus and no batting points and look good for an innnings defeat following on to Sussex.

Given that scenario Durham have to take it a bit steady which suits us as an extremely unlikely Durham victory could only be achieved by them scoring very quickly to rack up enough runs following on to have time to bowl us out.

The most likely outcome is Durham failing to get to 400 today, following on, heads dropping and crashing to an innings defeat.

The_President Posted on 22/9 9:21

Morning all. So we are actually looking at finishing fourth from bottom, which was looking ridiculous a week ago. In some ways, letting Durham get the draw might be the easy thing to do. Not really cricket, perhaps but hardly 'doing a Brian Rose'.

ray192 Posted on 22/9 11:28

Do you think YORKSHIRE would let D***** get full batting points and then the draw which by my calculations would save D***** by 1/2pt over Notts, thats if Notts lose which looks pretty certain to me .

Are my calculations correct?.

you are correct Ray a post of mine ^^up^^ there a bit confirms it!

If Gibson and Benkenstein keep going then 400 doesn't look so far away.

Off topic slightly I saw Gibson hit one of the biggest and effortless sixes I've every had the pleasure to see live when the Windies were warming up on tour with a match at The Parks several moons ago.

Capybara Posted on 22/9 11:46

The_President Posted on 22/9 11:59
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

Capy, I think it's likely to be the later. YORKS konw they're not going to lose, and with the bonus points guarenteeing safety it's just a case of going through the motions now. Though I wouldn't be surprised if their captain hasn't had a word.

Whilst looking to see what the Brian Rose reference was about I came across this which may be of interest to some people.

The Durham team has a number of Teessiders, occasionally plays in Teesside, and its success is good for the area.

The Yorkshire team has no Teessiders and, as swanleyred has said, is very Leeds-centric.

re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

Yes if there is no more play both are safe .

I think it was all down to attendances which means money yes but not totally sure TBH.

T4Tomo Posted on 22/9 14:59
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

Yorkshire use to play all over the county and felt they were at a disadvatage as their players weren't getting used to batting / bowling on on home ground. Hence they retrenched to play at just Headingley and a couple of games at Scarborough, principally in festival week.

Cue much wailing in Bradford Sheffield Middlesbrough and wherever else they ventured.

7_The_Informer Posted on 22/9 15:16
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

It was a lot to do with money though. Yorkshire CCC didn't own Headingley, (it was owned by Leeds RLFC) so only made money on things they sold in the ground (programmes, food, membership, not money on the gate). The games at Acklam Park were subsidised big time by British Steel who always had hosipitality tents there (on the rugby field side). In the end, the move has some positives and negatives, the biggest negative being the fact that people now grow up in Middlesbrough not realising that they are in Yorkshire ...

I stand by my view that we don't deserve to stay up, but fortunately Notts have proved even less deserving by collapsing spinelessly in two successive matches when a draw in either or a couple more bonus points would have kept them up.

re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

At Ray's request, the penultimate daily GOG report

Started with a couple of overs apiece from Kruis and Gillespie, then the leggies were put on, again to defensive fields. A good move; there was no pressure on the kids and they got a long bowl - Rashid has a big-spinning stock delivery, and Lawson gets bounce. They didn't trouble either batsman, though.

The rain started at 2pm, so we retired to the Long Room to drink Guinness and watch the Sussex/Notts highlights. So the position tomorrow is as stated earlier in this thread: if this match is a draw, then Notts are down.

What's the betting that both sides just pootle around until early afternoon and then agree a draw? That means Yorks will finish fourth bottom, which I think would be their highest place of the season.

Here's the BBC match report

Link: BBC

GrumpyOldGit Posted on 23/9 21:59
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

And here's the GOG report

Low-lying fog meant that play was delayed until 11:45 - good work from the umpires who realised that there was quite a sizeable crowd in and they had a responsibility to ensure play started ASAP.

The big partnership just kept going and going until both Gibson and Benkenstein went within a few deliveries, and then young Rashid went through the tail. The tail-enders just didn't have a clue - poking and prodding, relying upon a big forward stride to smother the spin. The last two wickets of the first innings fell to ripping leg-breaks that pitched on leg and clipped the top of the off-bail. Beautiful to see.

With a couple of early wickets there was brief hope of Yorks winning by an innings, but the Mackems batted carefully.

Remember that Yorks had the chance to put Durham down if they won the game, but the gossip around the ground was that the Yorky players regarded the Notts crew as arrogant and aloof. Durham, however, were seen as affable and sociable (not to mention Northern). Draw your own conclusions.

So that's it for another season. Dicky Dawson's contract won't be renewed, and Chalky has already resigned as skipper (as we all said he would/should) and I'm already worried about how we replace a player who has scored over 1700 runs this season....

Link: White and Dawson to go

7_The_Informer Posted on 23/9 22:00
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

In other news, Chalky is stepping down as captain and Dawson is being released ....

7_The_Informer Posted on 23/9 22:05
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

Cheers Grumps, any news on who will take over from Lehmann?

I think letting Dawson go is the right decision, but he should walk into another county team, we just seem to have hit the jackpot with Lawson and Rashid. What is there control like? They seemed to be going for a few an over? As a fellow leggie, I always like to see them do well but know that it is very difficult to contain a team if you are going for 4 an over. Maidens is what buils the pressure.

As for Chalky, I think that McGrath is a shoe-in as captain - can't see any other options really (but if the call came, I am sure that I could do a job ...).

ossett Posted on 23/9 22:17
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

That proves it Boro is just a small town in YORKSHIRE.

GrumpyOldGit Posted on 23/9 22:29
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

T_I:

Like you, I think Mags is a definite for skipper next season.
As it says on the link, he only resigned to concentrate on his {sadly brief) England career. When he did captain the Yorky side his batting actually improved - leading by example perhaps?

I'm not sure that Dicky Dawson will find another county with his bowling figures after this season (again, see link). Strange that he got his England cap before his county cap, and then faded quickly from the England scene.

As for our two leggies, they can be expensive, but they're only kids. The variations of flight and dip will soon come. At the moment Lawson can get bounce and relies upon an occasional topspinner/flipper for a plumb LBW. Rashid has a stock ripping legbreak which can be mixed up with a faster, flatter delivery that has the same effect. Neither of them seem to have developed a googly yet.

Both leggies were obviously told just to bowl today and not worry about the runs. This was an extended net, under full match conditions, with no pressure. Just what they needed to gain confidence. Next season they should both be bigger and stronger -Rashid in particular looks like a good frost will snap him in two.

Maybe we should put him on the Phil Stamp Guinness and Pies Diet?

Link: Averages

7_The_Informer Posted on 23/9 22:37
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

Yep, Dawson's figures don't look great, but he wasn't playing in August when you expect a spinner to do well, so I think that it is a mis-representation of his figures. I think that his record in 2's cricket for the last month will be more representative of how good he is (I don't know how he has been doing though to be honest).

In my memory, he is only one of 3 players to get an England cap before a Yorkshire one - Freddie Trueman, Chalky and Dawson, though I may be wrong about Chalky.

Rashid and Lawson should also be able to help each other out - I think we have already seen that as his record this season is a lot better than last. a good winters nets (or playing overseas) will do them the world of good. For one of my teams, up until 2 years ago there were 3 of us leggies playing and the competition that created did wonders for our form, so I think that things can only get better for us now. Next season could be a big one for both the team and the leggies ...

GrumpyOldGit Posted on 23/9 22:49
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

T_I, next season could depend on what pitches are prepared at Headingley - it's always been regarded as a seamer's paradise. Maybe that's what did for Dawson, but he just seemed to have lost any variation that he did have.

Any figures for the second team should be taken with a pinch of salt. Remember how Ashley Metcalfe always dominated the seconds but was maddeningly inconsistent in the first team? Word is that Matthew Wood (lots of runs for the stiffs this year) is well down the pecking order and will go to Durham for next season.

Our leggies now need a short rest, and then a winter playing in Australia/South Africa. That should toughen them up a bit.

7_The_Informer Posted on 23/9 23:58
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

Ashley Metcalfe was one of my first Yorkie heroes - he always seemed to perform well at Acklam Park (at least in my memory).

re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

This illustrates the problem we have next year.

Who is going to fill the void? 1700 runs at 77 are pretty big boots to fill. Add to that Chalky, as make shift opener, can't go on forever and neither Sayers nor Gale really look the part at the top of the order.
Rashid and Lawson took the division by storm in the latter stages, lets hope that Rashid can bring some of his run scoring form in A team and U19 cricket onto the big stage.

Looks like we're weaker than last season at the minute. But the youngsters got valuable experience so maybe the Championship is an attainable ambition?

Sorry mate .

T4Tomo Posted on 1/11 15:33
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

Big blow losing Lumb, whilst he never quite fulfilled his promised he did get just shy of 1000 runs at over 41 average, a touch better than Chalky and bettered only by McGrath and Lehmann last season.

Younis should produce the goods but hasn't played county cricket before so difficult to see him being better than Lehmann, Adams is a like for like replacement for Mcgrath if he goes and a step up on Lumb who has gone to Hants.

Basically if McGrath leaves we are worse off than last year, and if he stays we haven't really moved forward.

ray192 Posted on 1/11 15:43

On SSN last night they stated Yorkshires 2nd overseas player to be named next week i wonder who?,could it be dizzy again? anybody any ideas i think it will be a bowler myself.

T4Tomo Posted on 2/11 8:57
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

Gillespie originally only signed for a year, My guess is that 36 wickets at 34 ave wasn't quite what we'd hoped for and he won't be offered a second season.

If we do sign another overseas player then it will be a quick bowler, or we may be looking around for a Kolpak player who can stay on once we are down to 1 overseas player per county. Charl Willoughby from Somerset would be a good signing, not sure what his contractual situation is though.

ray192 Posted on 2/11 9:05
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

T4T

Yes Dizzy's bowling figures was not upto much but it was his first season in the league i think?,but he could bat aswell .

But i agree it will be a fast bowler .

Capybara Posted on 2/11 9:07
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

Kolpak?

T4Tomo Posted on 2/11 9:38
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

Well its spelt right so I guess its a genuine query.

Kolpak agreement effectively gives workers from certain developing states the right to work in the EU. Includes South Africa and variuos south sea island, which is why the county championship has a number of South african that don't count towards the "overseas quota" and the same with Fijians, Tongans and Samoans in the rugby premiership.

Capybara Posted on 2/11 10:03
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham.

Right. With you now Thought it was butter.

I'd assumed that there were so many South Africans because they had British or Dutch passports. Explains a lot.

Bloody typical this - just after I renew my membership (under the new system this is both more complicated and expensive), I find that we have once again shot ourselves in the foot.

Now that Byas has gone, will Mags stay? Was his "no-nonsense" (i.e. autocratic) style of management at the heart of the problem?

And if Celestron and Ray need help in shoring up the batting order, give me a shout .

Yorkshire v Durham
County Championship D1, Headingley: Yorkshire v Durham
Match starts 1100 BST Wednesday 25 April 2007
Yorkshire could be without key batsman Anthony McGrath for Wednesday's opening home Championship match against Durham. Both teams won their opening fixtures.

Should McGrath not make it, his place could be taken by Andrew Gale, who contributed an unbeaten 69 in the one-day match against Nottinghamshire.

Durham will play with the same side who won in impressive fashion at Worcester.

They will travel south with 19-year-old Academy player Karl Turner, who is set to perform 12th man duties.
