| Ayresome Angels vs Boro Boot Boys | |
Did I dream it? Deep in the mists of time (early 70's to you) I distinctly recall a battle of wills on the terraces of the Holgate. First there were the Ayresome Angels, who prided themselves on total support for The Boro, but with fairness and good behaviour being their watchwords. Then, the rise of the hooligan element, named the Boro Boot Boys, slowly took over the Holgate, week by week becoming more vocal until eventually there was a tipping point. I recall vividly watching from the safety of the South Stand upper seats a small band of Angels in The Holgate, surrounded by hundreds of "Boot Boys", with the hooligans out-singing them, and gesturing to them to leave. After that the Boot Boys ruled the roost. Did anyone here witness this or take part in this event? Or did I dream it?

I remember that happening in 1968 at Millwall. My brother-in-law asked these frankly dangerous looking spotty boys in 12 hole docs 'Where are the Angels today, lads?' and was promptly told to 'Fook off, we're the boot boys'. Which was nice.

Hmm..1968, so it might have been earlier than I thought. I started going in 1966 and by 1968 I had a season ticket with my grandad in the south stand. We used to buy it about 3 games into the season to get it cheaper, we were skint, but we were happy...wait a minute, that's not right, we were skint, and we were miserable.

It's around about this time that we stopped singing "Daisy, Daisy give me your answer do" and replaced it with "I found an auld stocking and filled it with lead, I hit an auld lady right over the 'ead"

started going in 67 hence my login name was a young lad who can laugh now when i used to go with a scarf a rattle and believe it or not a crash helmet painted red and white!! started in the boys end jumped over the wall and climbed the fence at the back to sit in the seata behind the goal, there was a few of us one later went on the write the "Frontline " book when i got to about 13/14 in 70/71 we took ourselves to the Holgate At first it was "we are the Ayrsome angels and we never miss a match" Then around that time a chant started going up "we are the boot boys the boot boys" looked at these lads with skinheads and Dr Martin boots all polished in red tuxon, over the weeks their number grew, one by one me and my mates got a pair od Dr Martins, a patchwork quilt jumper and Levi stapress, some shaved their heads but not me i waited the following season when Skinheads were overtaken by suadeheads We used to go to all the away ganes with all the big lads at the time, Jonah, Omo, Conker, Sharpy, and Hodgey to name a few all part of growing up i reckon good days The boot boys were at every club in large numbers but it was only a few hundred who were up for battle the rest it was just the fashion at that time i have grinned lately when i have heard the Ayrsome angels chant at the Riverside so no fastcakes it wasnt a dream and you and i probably bumped into each other many a time over those seasons

Walkin' along the high street, Couple of mates or more, Lookin' for some bother, Cos life was such a bore, Came across a Sund'land fan, He tried to run away, So we kicked his fookin head in, Just to pass the time of day. [courus] With me big red boots, And me big red laces, Me turned up jeans, And me Boro braces, Come and climb abord son, We'll take for you a ride, Cos I've very little on top of me head, And even less inside,
