| Went down Stockton on Saturday and ... | |
...guess waht? I didn't see ant Somalis or drug pushers! However, there did seem to be lots of young girls taking their younger siblings out for the afternoon. Very kind of them I thought. And what's with the music blaring out of speakers in that new bit? It's bad enough having to put up with other peoples choice of music in pubs, shpos, etc. but in the street!!!??? Scandalous.

I've said it once, and I'll say it again ... It's a bleedin' shame to read about Stockton these days !! I went there in 2003, and there was more litter and crap blowing around the streets, the whole place looked old and used. It used to be such a great place ..

Apparently the widest High Street in the UK. Still a sh ithole though.

48, I used to live in Thornaby, and we caught the number 8 bus from the Jollies every Saturday to Stockton, for the ABC Minors. Me Nana was an usherette at the ABC, and we always got a free ice cream at intermission. After the show was over, we'd meet me Mam in Stockton, and walk about doing some shopping. Me Grandad used to go in the Jockers for a few pints, and we'd buy all our fresh vegetable off the market, and get a pound of tripe for me Grandads supper. The whole town was a beautiful place, clean as a whistle, without a chav in sight. The market, and the old pubs, and those big shops on the High Street, wonderful memories.. As a kid, I loved to got to Stockton, and even as a teenager it used to be a great night out.

It's got the widest high street in the World you know.

Yeah, sounds familiar Ned. People used to come from all over to have a night out in Stockton. So what's happened? I was referring to Saturday afternnon by the way? And also somebody posted a thread referring to the large ammount of Somalis and drug dealers walking the streets. They must have stayed in on Saturday eh?

Stockton a great night out? are you mad. It a great night out if you want to wear some of your old clothes from 2 years ago, listen to some out dated music, watch or be involved in a few fights, and pull or be knocked back by ugly slappers (its so degradeing).

Yes, I don't live in the area anymore, but me and the missus wandered through Stockton in 2003, and I was astounded at what they'd done with the place. It was a shithole ...

Good memories Nedkat. I used to go to school in Stockton, played football at the Tilery, swam in the baths, fell in love with a waitress in Robinson's cafeteria. It was fun. I haven't been for years.

I think its a big risk going down stockton, theres more of a chance of you getting beat up than not. Middlesbrough is a few miles away yet modern, stockton is still stuck atleast 5 years back in time, i dont get it.
| DrBuck Posted on 10/10 14:57 | |
| re: Went down Stockton on Saturday and ... | |
You lot must be talking about a different Stockton from the place I live. The Stockton I'm talking about is located on Teesside, just over the river from Thornaby and a few miles up river from Middlesbrough.

How strange.... Live in stockton, brought up in Stockton, Drink in Stockton. Watch the Boro I only go in to town with my wife on a Saturday and the Lads on a Friday and I cant recall seeing any of the things mentioned. I have in the past been to the Boro with the lads and thought the same about Boro as you think of Stockton. Still to find a pub in Boro that I would like to drink in. NO NEWCASTLE BROWN in Boro? the only thing worth while out of Newcastle. Dont like Yarm as I cant get a drink and all the draft bear is S**te apart from the bull but I will not wait 30 minuets to get a drink. Give me the choice then its Stockton every time. But I know where to go and dont in the Boro..

Selling Newcastle brown ale in Middlesbrough would be like selling Sunderland shirts in the Boro shop

Funnily enough like junouk I don't recall seeing them things (or certainly not any more than elsewhere)in Stockton DrBuck is quite accurate

| re: Went down Stockton on Saturday and ... | |
It's very strange. I really don't recognise the place some of you describe as Stockton. I've lived here nearly all my life and rarely see any of the things you lot are always pulling the place apart for, yet I go over to Middlesbrough and see everything you decry Stockton for! Many is the time I've had to leave a Boro pub in fear of my life, can't recall that happening in Stockton. I'm forever looking over my shoulder and checking my pockets because of all the dodgy characters. And some of the women....Jesus! Maybe it's because Middlesbrough is a new town in comparrison with Stockton which has a long and noble history that people there feel a little rootless and jealous?

| re: Went down Stockton on Saturday and ... | |
My personal experiences of Stockton seem to be that of many others, used to be a great place but now is full to the rafters of Asylum seekers, smackheads and chavs. A night out there is horrid, especially in Zanzibar, the place is so hostile is unbelievable. The only place I enjoy going to in Stockton is the Thomas Sheraton, and that Peking Garden is cracking for food. Saying that, Boro isn't exactly 'raving' either. I hate night outs there and places like Hush and Cornerhouse, full of pretty boys and fake tan clad girls. For a good night out it's Yarm for me, nice pint of Smith's in the places I go and always finish off the night in The Bay, don't knock it, had many a laugh in there with the regulars, many of them are my Nana's friends so a drink here and there is always offered, Imperial please! Horses for courses.

I don't think Stockton is a bad night out Brads Bar and sometimes Ibiza are the only 'staring' places I have been to and Zanzibar is not hostile imo - only once seen a fight there Me and my mates go to different places around Boro every week and then to Stockton about every 6 weeks

Teessidecleveland - I guess you ve not been in Rebels then ? I m from Mbro but feel alot safer on a night out in Stockton to be honest ,yeah some pubs are a shiitehole but thats the same anywhere

No Not been to Rebels Where is it? Take it it's one to avoid?

| re: Went down Stockton on Saturday and ... | |
I've never been to those places Teesside. You get used to going to your 'own' haunts I suppose and the reason I go to them is because I feel comfortable and relaxed in them. One does hear of trouble now and again, but as it doesn't affect me I don't worry. Maybe when I venture into Middlesbrough I go to the 'wrong' places? I began by talking about daytime Stockton really though and I don't see much, if any, difference between that and most other towns.
| markiemark666 Posted on 10/10 23:17 | |
| re: Went down Stockton on Saturday and ... | |
Im from stockton to and hate the place during the day and night, its scruffy as hell, out dated and you carnt glance at someone without ending up in a fight. Thats why saturday just gone is the first time i have ventured down there in 3 years. First pub had podium dancers in bikinis (not a strip club) the music was outdated as was everyones fashion sense, i got board so went home after 40mins I used to love going out in stockton untill my eyes opened and i realised how much better middlesbrough was. Infact middlesbrough and yarm are a diffrent class to stockton, i even like redcar better than stockton. I think thats what the problem is, stockton is surrounded by more bad areas than good, so you dont get a steady mix of clientel.
| tacker Posted on 10/10 23:20 | |
| re: Went down Stockton on Saturday and ... | |
TeessideCleveland, it's not more towards the fights I see, it's how others treat you, like simply smiling at somebody, or saying 'Y'oright mate' when walking out of the toilet etc. You just get a horrible look or the odd occasion, a smack. Used to love the place when I was new on the drinking scene, but now I hate the place. DrBuck, ya' damn right it's a good pub, if not a little like a timewarp.
| DrBuck Posted on 10/10 23:22 | |
| re: Went down Stockton on Saturday and ... | |
I disagree with you again Markie. Why do you say Stockton is scruffy? You went in one pub and judge the whole town on 40 minutes in it? Move if you dislike the place so much.
| AyresomeAvenger Posted on 10/10 23:25 | |
| re: Went down Stockton on Saturday and ... | |
In terms of a night out then most of the places in Middlesbrough and Stockton town centres should only appeal to you if you are under 30 and Yarm only if you are over that age. I like Yarm now but a few years back would have found it as dull as dishwater and be desperate to be where the action is. Also this idea that the town centre has only recently got as rough as it is now does not tally with my memory of Friday/Saturday nights in the 80's and 90's when fights were just as commonplace.
| Grumpy_Paul Posted on 10/10 23:29 | |
| re: Went down Stockton on Saturday and ... | |
Being a Stockton lad for 50 years it breaks my heart to see the state of the town centre. Sad to say that after my first night out in Boro for years a few weeks ago that Boro isn't much better. It's not an age thing, just a sad fact
| DrBuck Posted on 10/10 23:33 | |
| re: Went down Stockton on Saturday and ... | |
My ideal night out would be to sit in a pub with my lady and some good mates sharing some good banter whilst getting steadily slogged. Decent music playing in the background, no-one spilling drinks over us or acting like clowns. The pub hasn't to be too crowded and the people musn't partake in oneupmanship. I know this sounds boring to most of the younger crowd, but some of us want this and we don't want to have to go to out-of-town places to get it. I'm talking Friday and Saturday nights as well. Is this possible? If so can anyone tell me where?

| re: Went down Stockton on Saturday and ... | |
I would acctualy move if i lived any closer, but i find myself in a nice plot, on the outskirts. People who like stockton are people who are stuck in there ways (thats deffinately true if the music and fashion sense is anything to go by), if you know what i mean. Out of about 15 of us theres atleast 5 that wont set foot in stockton, day or night and that includes me, but the rest of my mates think its great. And wont go down boro. These are the type of people who Like Tenerife more than Ibiza. Tenerifes scruffy so is stockton Ibizas nice but parts are scruffy so is middlesbrough Is there a link?

Like everywhere, you have to know where to go and where not to go. On the whole, though, I'd rather be in Stockton than the Boro for a night out. Boro has become like the Quayside at Newcastle (the place for a night out). When i worked up there I preferred the Big Market - more honest and far less pretentious. I'm not saying Stockton hasn't gone downhill - of course it as, but then so as everywhere else. Society has gone to the dogs, scum roam the streets and decent honest people have to look over their shoulders and watch where they go.
