Away matches darn Sarf.........

Whenever I have ventured anywhere near the capital or into the capital to watch the Boro, and admittedly it hasnt been a lot of times (my love for the South of the country is well known to some), the atmosphere always seems to be flatter.

Is this because of the crowd being diluted by Boro supporters from the South who have become all hoity-toity (sp) and feel it is below them to stand up and get behind the team ?

re: Away matches darn Sarf.........

Me and my mates went to Charlton the other year and we thought this. Usually the away support is loud and vocal but it was totally flat where we were and was only roudy in this small section far from where we were.

Took us ages to get any life into anyone! Been to Port Vale/Wolves etc and its been great though. Not saying this is all down to southern fans as against Arsenal you could hear us all the way from Japan i imagine.

ourjonathan Posted on 6/11 11:26
re: Away matches darn Sarf.........

Marlon D - haven't you worked it out yet. Loads of people have left the Boro to move down south for work etc. Some of this strange folk have had the audacity to start families down Sarf and funnily enough their kids grow up with southern accents. Should we ban them from watching the Boro? - perhaps insist they sever all connections with Teesside and support Chelsea/ Arsenal etc. And perhaps if they get the sort of reaction you are suggesting for the crime of not having a full on Teesside accent it's no wonder they don't say/shout much.

Think about it. I trust you don't think that the 'cockneys' in the Boro end a re gloryhunters?

may i suggest that the utterly abject display from the bunch of primadonnas in white and blue had something to do with the 'flat' atmoshpere.

and where does this complete fallacy that northeners are more passionate and vocal come from?? what a load of bollox...and people wonder by Boro is viewed as a parochial town, when people who support the club but happen to have a southern accent are derided as fairweather or less passionate fans?!?!

Take Sheff Utd as an example. Everyone stood up all game singing their hearts out. The atmosphere was brilliant. At Watford as soon as the match kicked off everyone just sat down and the majority were quiet, it was crap. The stoopid southern numpties behind me took about 20 minutes to realise Downing was on the right and they also keppt calling Boateng Euell and vice versa.

If it wasn't you SS, who was it giving the Fish Wife gig at Watford?

Some dreadful women with chav kids in tow seemed to cheer when the first goal went in and then went to great lengths (incuding a flash of the Boro tattoo) to prove she wasn't a Watford fan, swearing a lot at the bloke a few rows back that was winding her up.

It wasn't your Mum was it Marlon?

Nah it's not just Southern away trips, what i find usually happens is that we get there to early and in the pubs it's all singing and drinking and by the time the game starts we're either to pissed or lost our voices before the game actually begins, i can think of two away games it's been like this. Sheff United was one of them and Reading was the other.

Nah it was disapointing obviously the Football played a part but we were pretty quiet. My mate went to his first away games against Blackburn and Sunderland last season where the atmosphere at both games was class, he imagined all were like this and was pretty gutted about the Sheff united game.

Mufflar raises a good point. The Riverside is hardly a vocal centre of excellence. Tsk....

Marlon - I used the HRT to knock the masculinity of having being raised in Boro out of me....I see the failings of it when I have to engage in conversations with those still in posession of the 'scrote gene'. My apologies xxx

I find some of the comments on this disgraceful.

I am Boro through and through and still have my Red Book despite living in London.

ste_north_stand - "The stoopid southern numpties behind me" - are you for real? I would say 99% of fans sat in the Boro end were born in Teesside.

I am not Southern, nor am I a numptie but my accent has changed simply because that's what happens when you move to another area!

What I don't understand is why you think that I am a posh (unt and somehow less of a Boro fan than you are. Idiot.

Dont be f'cking radged you bunch of divvy gets.

I've been away from up yonder for over 10 years, yet I am always one of the most vocal people at the match. Always ready to join into with the songs, offer positive encouragement to the players and throw in the odd funny quip when my fancy takes me.

The amount of miserable, whinging fookers that had come all the way down to Watford to bitch and complain from the word go was a complete disgrace.

You pay your money, you have every right to complain, but give a player 5 minutes before you start abusing him.

Southern accent? Never happen to me.

ste_north_stand Posted on 6/11 13:30
re: Away matches darn Sarf.........

I have nothing against Southern fans. Just these lot were numpties and they were Southern. If they were from round here i'd have called them Northern numpties. I apologise for causing offence anyway.

But i stand by what i say about the atmopshere generally being poorer at away games down south than up north. From my personal experience anyway.

Vinny not exactly, I was the height of fashion and style as usual. I am a woolyback though (and proud of it), I am also very vocal.

I was trying to be positive too, one of the only ones who was around me. Until Euell went off and Boateng stayed on that is, from there I must admit I was rather subdued.

I did get involved with Yak's round of aopplause for his shot and the "Ole" chants too none the less.

Haven't read through it all but...

Whenever the Boro play up north we stand and sing, Bolton - stood and sang (well the 10 of us that went did ), Sheffield United - more than half the support stood and sang, Man City - same as sheff united

Reading - sat down and shut up, Arsenal - sat down and shut up, Watford - sat down and shut up.

Almost conclusive, could talk about last season but won't.

Too many Boro south go and don't do sweet fa, it's diluted by them, go to a library if you wanna keep your gobs shut, not Boro away matches.

For the record I'm an original woolyback and moved down south for personal gain with no regard as to how effective my support for the Boro would be.

I earn a decent salary and my Kids have southern accents (although the oldest does a good impersonation of her dad for comedy effect every now and again) and have never suffered from rickets or scurvy.

I am also a three games a season wonder fan. Games close to home and glamour ties only. You won't catch me at Blackburn away on a wet Monday night.

And I'm proud of all the above.

If being a true Boro fan is standing up with your back to the game looking around to see who's watching you sing and making excuses to the stewards for your mother (who's had to come along with you under the terms of your ASBO after all) who's drunk so much lager top she's fallen over and wet herself, then count me out.

"Over half of the attendees at the Southern based away games are nothing more than three games per season superfans."

Have a word with yourself how long have you been supporting MY home town team,My first game was in 1969, I moved Sarf in 84 got off my arse and got a job been here ever since , was there on Saturday and despite it being the worst performance in my memory taking into account how poor Watford are /were I will be back with all the exiled Boro against Spurs. I have a 12 year old boy born in Herts who's proudest moment was to lead HIS Boro out at Charlton last year. He could have supported who he wanted down here but loves the Boro no less than anyone of you or our family still on Teesside or exciled wherever.

Cut the crap, Even the most enthusiastic supporter of any team would have struggled to raise a voice on Saturday.

borobadge Posted on 6/11 19:28
you dont live on the same side of the street

no one likes us..

no one likes us..

no one likes us..we dont care.

WE are boro..super boro..We are boro..from the norffff.......

re: Away matches darn Sarf.........

Agree with RH

We have some great fans in the South (as well as in the Boro), travelling up for home games on a regular basis.

Others stop moaning and get behind the team, everyone of us needs to pull together on Saturday. Shout, scream, sing, clap (boo the opposition) whatever, but make the team know you are with them.

Like many other fans I have travelled tens of thousands of miles particularly over the last 20 years and know the efforts that have gone into raising our club from the depths and I am not going back there and I know we will not.

Grove_Hill_Red Posted on 7/11 12:48
re: Away matches darn Sarf.........

I vehemently object to being told that because I moved down South for work I shouldn't attend matches down here which involve MY home town "cos I mess up the atmosphere".

The audacity of some of the young upstarts on here who have never known the badtimes takes some beating. I was sat next to a couple of little scrotes on Saturday who seemed to think every other word needed to start with an F and the other words were pretty much indecipherable.

In short, do NOT tell me I mess up the atmosphere when I attend the games I can get to. Do NOT tell me to stay away. I AM BORO to the core along with a lot of others, and when I shout and sing it doesn't sound like a little girl (no offence to the girls).

Infighting does no good. We are ALL Boro wherever we are now, and the club needs us ALL!

"Too many Boro south go and don't do sweet fa, it's diluted by them, go to a library if you wanna keep your gobs shut, not Boro away matches."

We sent back 700 tickets for this game. If MSS hadn't come we would have had about 10 people there.

grantus Posted on 7/11 13:26
re: Away matches darn Sarf.........

Imagine what the atmosphere would have been like if the Watford or Man City games were at home?

This whole thing is a farce, instigated by shysters.

Some people who have left Teesside actually have a much more acutely developed sense of who they are and where they come from.

Oh well, I'm off for me lunch, jellied eals again.

Its like the old days when things ain't going very well.
diff groups in the Holgate scrapping, but now its done over the internet.

Rob - how about a FMTTM South and FMTTM North?

What about MSS getting seats in the middle cos they can pay a bit more and the northerners getting the front and the sides, cheaper.

Once we have sommat decent on the pitch all this idle banter will subside, I blame Mr Gibson.

Indestructable Posted on 7/11 13:37
re: Away matches darn Sarf.........

Why don't we just get a device to measure the decibel level of home games, away games in the north and away games in the south and compare results with this level. And whoever comes out on top are the bestest, hardest supporters.

Marlon D I take my hat off to you. How you got over 120 posts on this topic I'll never understand.

It sounds like the same group who were right next to me in Row E. There were about six of them. Decided to go to the pub. At least I had plenty of room in the second half.

re: you dont live on the same side of the str

I cant believe I'm reading this from some of you.

I am obviously the type of boro fan that is hated then....I have never lived in Boro, wasnt even born there...so I am abviously a glory supporter...admittedly one who has a red book and travels up for every match from Surrey....My dad is from Teesside and thats why im a boro fan,
I shout, I sing, and rarely leave the match with my voice, and of course am a fully paid up member of MSS, the members of whom are some of the most amazing boro fans I know. some of your comments are truly ignorant. Maybe thats what happens when you live your lives in a Teesside bubble.

Lisbonlegend Posted on 8/11 8:32
re: you dont live on the same side of the str

Jennie, in all seriousness this was a wind up by Marlon. A cheap attempt at a ton by mocking the southern based contingent such as myself. Don't take it personally, Boro fans are a rare breed and only an idiot (Marlon) or a child (I've lost my flag) would seriously consider slagging off a section of our support.

I've been down south 12 months now and that doesn't make me any less of a fan than the previous 29 years spent in Teeesside. Keep the Faith and ignore the wind ups.

MarlonD Posted on 8/11 9:49
re: you dont live on the same side of the str

Lisbon, ignore the wind up !!! Bit rich coming from the biggest storyteller in the Northern hemisphere. I have noticed a difference in the atmospheres so I asked if anybody knew the reason.

You just keep to the threads were you and your boyfriend fall out and then kiss and make up, you moody fat waster.

Oh and BTW some Boro fan you are, bullying and assaulting another Boro fan because you had had a couple of shandys.

Vinny_Garstroke Posted on 8/11 9:51

Lisbon is a three games per season wonder (all withing an hour of his home).

Lisbonlegend Posted on 8/11 10:03
re: you dont live on the same side of the str

Maybe it was the weather Marlon, or the fact we conceded an early goal or that there was no beer on sale in the ground....

Where you there Vinny? LOL.

Vinny_Garstroke Posted on 8/11 10:07
re: you dont live on the same side of the str

No I wasn't, though to be fair, the game wasn't being played on my doorstep.
Also, I don't feel the need to incessantly ramble on about games, and the 'interesting' shenanigans that took place before, or after matches that have taken place in my locality.

mufflar Posted on 8/11 10:08
