"zero tolerance on drugs"

So said the club statement when Xavier was busted. But he will sign a new deal this week and may be playing against West Ham.

They mean fans snorting coke in the toilets.

Morality goes out of the window, when Parnaby is the only alternative.

Maybe they've introduced calculus into their working and are only interested in tolerance as it approaches zero but it ain't quite zero?

desperation x league place = ambitions divided by social conscience.

may be they think he didnt actually snort cocain or knowingly take performance enhancing drugs. the laws dont allow any flexibility though so he had to be banned

Where's the room for flexibility in "zero tolerance" exactly?

When you look at what happened though, the evidence points to the conclusion that Xavier didn't knowingly do anything wrong.

Why else the reduction in his ban?

If the club are confident of this, then it doesn't contradict their stated policy to sign him.

If it was a genuine mistake and they thought it was just a inadvertant technical infringement, why sack him then?

What's the beef? We didn't tolerate him when he took drugs. Now he's clean we do.

I just feel uncomfortable with it. Not so much the re-employment of someone who has been rehabilitated (we took Merson), more with what seems to be a slightly sheepish mumbling moral climbdown after a lot of sanctimonious bluster at the time.

Xavier said he tested positive, 'hereby confirmed this fact', that there was a harmless explanation, and 'in order to furnish his proof' he would undergo a number of tests. So presumably Southgate has been suitably furnished to give him a new contract. Lovely teak sideboard and a glass coffee table by all accounts.
