re: 1B coal power station to be built -Teesside

British Gas owner Centrica has revealed plans for a possible new coal-fired power station on Teesside, the first in the UK since Drax was built in 1974.
The firm claims it would be the UK's greenest fossil fuel station, using both clean-coal and carbon-capture technology at the same time.

It would cost about 1bn ($1.9bn) and supply power to one million homes.

Centrica said it would have the fewest emissions of any fossil fuel power station in the UK.

The move comes after a summer of soaring oil prices and as the UK seeks to determine its energy strategy for the coming decades.

The firm's managing director Jake Ullrich said: "We are probably going to be the largest builder of offshore power through windmills, and that only has about 30 to 35% reliability.

"This plant would be available 100% of the time."

It would be built in partnership with UK clean coal plant developer Progressive Energy, and provide energy for British Gas customers.

When the question is "where can we build an ugly filthy polution belching eye-sore?" the answer is...

The word "possible" in the link means that its a pipe dream (no pun intended) - probably from the Gazette? - and it will not happen.

Why can't it be built in Surrey ffs????

It's only a power station and if it's safe then what's the problem?

Excellent news!

Maybe a job for me whilst it's being built!!!

no doubt as soon as its built someone will invent Cold Fusion and the plant will be built in newcastle or wales. Its always the way.

We're not in a position to be choosey, this could be the greatest thing that happens to the area for 50 years, god knows Teesside needs investment.

re: 1B coal power station to be built -Teess

The problem is another dozen huge cooling towers on the skyline.

The Enron cloud is bad enough.

I thought the worlds coal supplies were going to run out in 20 years. Seems a waste of time building a coal power station.

re: 1B coal power station to be built -Teess

there are huge reserves of coal . MOst of them are in the US , Canada and I think Auz . THe big problem with coal is that it is a major pollutant ( even so called 'clean coal' isn't good ) .
I wld prefer another nuclear plant to coal.

re: 1B coal power station to be built -Teess

Probably 100 permanent jobs created, with all the profits ending up in the South East.

Look at Enron they employed 200 energy traders in Chelsea, with probably 100 jobs at Wilton at their main power plant. The pollution it creates probably loses more then the jobs it creates. It does not reduce the cost of electricity for Teesside homes and businesses, because of the National Grid. If a people's republic of Teesside was created it would be different, that we could charge Londoners a fortune for their energy!

A new Coal Power station for Teesside is no fantastic benefit, 95% of the UK would not want it anyway.

re: 1B coal power station to be built -Teess

Ok guys,a few facts.
Teesside power station (not Enron anymore) is an extremely clean station,it has to be,the environmental controls are so tight.
The 'cloud' that you see is purely steam from the cooling tower, again which is environmentally controlled.
No smoke is made on the palnt, therefore in cannot possibly be belched out into the air.
You may also have noticed that the steam from the tower is always dwarfed by the amount of steam from the much larger and more numerous towers from the other companies on the wilton site.
But no-one ever mentions them - wonder why ?

If a PRT was created , it wld be worse than 3rd WOrld. LOndon contributes more to the UK economy that it gets.

just been doing about this in general studies last lesson, aparently the many nuclear power plants we have are coming to there end stages.. this would be a very good idea....and the fact we are using new methods too reduce the carbon dioxide.....they are experimenting new techiniques with this plant by storing the waste carbon dioxide under the north sea
