Sorry - couldn't resist - Jones has done no wrong so far.

A lot will depend on McGrath playing or not and Harmison bowling.

I live in hope of 1-1 after this test.

Everything I have read/heard for this test - win the toss, bat. Get a massive 1st innings score and watch the ball spin, turn and bounce from day three.

It's easy this cricket lark really.

You watching it Ray?

I'll probably be up for the first session - looking after my boy tomorrow so need some sleep.

Why the jesus isn't Monty in the team? Adelaide is supposed to be extremely condusive to spin on the 3rd day, if not the 2nd day. If they only want to play one spinner, surely Monty merits his place.

I can see another hammering here, although i'm obviously hoping otherwise.

Celestron Posted on 2/12 9:26
re: Australia v ENGLAND.

Morning Raymondo....watched every ball during the night and what a great night it was. At the start of play I thought that either Collingwood or Pieterson would have to make a big hundred and the rest play around him so it was just great to watch both of them do the biz. taking Langers wicket at the end has given us a good chance tomorrow of chipping away and getting ourselves into a position to square the series.

By the way I know you like these sort of details..during the lunch break I had a bacon buttie in toasted ciabatta with brown sauce and a pot of tea and at Tea a cuppa and a slice of Bakewell Tart and you know of my fondness for a bit of tart..

Sounds like time has finally caught up with the Aussies. Mcgrath has a heel problem and Warne a bad back. I look forward to watching Warne's face as KP launches him time after time. Apparently they gambled on winning the toss knowing that McGrath wasn't fit. Shame.

79-3 and Ponting pulls Hoggard down to the square leg boundary and Giles is under it and it's 79-4 their top man is back in the hutch Clarke is coming out he's shyting himself England are on their way...but he drops it and you just know that Ponting will make a bundle and he does...311-5 England are still in a decent position but early wickets are needed tomorrow to get the pressure back on but the wicket is still as flat as a witches tit and it's looking like a draw but for one moment at 79-3 we were on our way...

Got draw written all over it. Isn't it ironic that they leave Monty out because he can't field and it was Ashley Giles who dropped the chance to get Ponting early on. Play Up Monty! Monty Play Up!

G'day Ray (that's got a bit of a ring to it!)

I'll bet you're all feeling a bit better about this test.

Looks like it's going to be a draw. If we can avoid the follow-on, I can't see it going any other way unless your batsmen completely collapse.

They need to get rid of gilcrist quickly...

is it just me or is Gilchrist the spitting image of that bloke off the Paul Hogan show that wore that silly water polo cap and talked out of the side of his mouth all the time.

shortandbald Posted on 4/12 2:02
re: Australia v ENGLAND.

I found the Adelaide Oval on google earth and what a strange shaped ground it is from above, very long and thin. With all that space around ityou'd have thought they would have widened it and made the boundries more even instead of being huge down the ground and very short square of the wicket.

Nedkat Posted on 4/12 2:02
re: Australia v ENGLAND.

I don't think this reporter likes Giles very much ...

Over 115 Warne blocks the final two balls of the over, and Giles should be whipped straight out of the attack now. The joke bowler's done the trick as Gilchrist lost his concentration. Now it's time to get the proper ones back involved

ray192 Posted on 4/12 2:04
re: Australia v ENGLAND.

Pieterson bowling now.

Nedkat Posted on 4/12 2:05
re: Australia v ENGLAND.

Whoops ! I think he's hit the bottle a bit too early ...

This has been a really responsible innings from Clarke, and he's putting Damien Martyn in particular under real pressure if Shane Watson comes into the side in Perth. Warne hits into the covers and it almost carries to Pietersen in the covers. The next ball from Anderson is overpitched and driven sweetly to the cover fence for four runs.

shortandbald Posted on 4/12 2:05
re: Australia v ENGLAND.

There you go Ned,
Pietersen the proper spinner is back on.

re: Australia v ENGLAND.

The other thing about that view on google earth is that it shows that the ground is sat on the banks of a river. Which makes it strange that it is such a dry dead wicket. you would have thought that the water table would be quite high being that close to a river, which normally gives a pretty lively pitch because it always retains some moisture.

Spoff_MFC Posted on 4/12 8:35
re: Australia v ENGLAND.

It certainly looks like the pitch is going to be the winner - only saw the firat hour last night and though Giles moved it a bit so Warne could destroy us.

See a report though that said Pietersen was more dangerous (again) than Giles. He has been great has Giles, but time for Panesar to come in I think.

If we can add another 150 to the lead we have by the first hour after lunch I would like us to declare and have ago. But on the the other hand, why risk snatching defeat from the hand of a draw. Maybe drawing this and winning the last three will be better.

ray192 Posted on 4/12 8:43
re: Australia v ENGLAND.

Spoff

Giles was doing nothing with the ball all afternoon and he was bowling in tandem with Harmison who also did nothing then Hoggard destroyed them with a spell of first class bowling . Giles out Monty in must be the way forward .

Spoff_MFC Posted on 4/12 8:48

Gilo dropped Ponting in the first inning too, so Fletcher cannot even say his fielding is better than Panesar!

Wasn't the easiest catch, but he should have held on.

That imho was the turning point of the game .

Celestron Posted on 4/12 9:16
re: Australia v ENGLAND.

Morning Raymondo...without doubt as I said yesterday if Giles hangs onto that chance then I believe that Australia would have struggled to make 250 and following on would have lost but he didn't and that enabled Ponting and Hussey to put the big stand together that took the game away from us.....Fingers crossed for Flintoff.

COME ON ENGLAND !!!

Much better display than the first test, I hope they take the confidence thru to the next one. Give Giles a well earned rest and give Monty a run out. I think we'll benefit from his bowling better than the current line up.

This one's not over yet, we have to be careful not to end up in a big bag of collapse early on.

I'd love to hear what Boycott thinks of this fooking shower

Celestron Posted on 5/12 11:03
re: Australia v ENGLAND.

If I hadn't stayed up and watched this shambles I wouldn't have believed it possible. Even allowing for the fact that I have seen us capitulate so many times over the years I honestly never dreamed that we could go tits up in the manner we did. I don't think that there is another side who could make 551-6 with a double centurion another player with 158 and a bowler who could take 7 wickets on a pitch that was as flat as a ducks instep and still lose from that position. I don't think that Bangladesh or Zimbabwe would have gone under like we did we were totally inept.

Watching Flintoff walking out to the middle he looked as though he was going to the gallows his body language said it all shoulders hunched chin on his chest the last place he wanted to be was walking out to bat for his country and here lies part of the problem. Flintoff has too much on his plate and should never have been given the captaincy, Strauss was the obvious choice so that Freddy could concentrate on his batting and bowling.

The Manager Fletcher has made some shocking decisions regarding team selection Giles who hasn't played for the best part of a year is preferred over Panesar and Read who is the best stumper we have is left out for Jones because he may score a few more runs than Read this despite the fact that Read averaged 42 during the Summer. Anderson and Flintoff also have been recovering fron injury and along with Harmison were all woefully short of match practice. Bowling in the nets is vastly different from being out in the middle yet we played 4 players who have hardly played any cricket since the beginning of Summer.

Panesar should come in at Perth now that the damage has been done and hopefully deadlegs Harmison and Anderson will be dropped in favour of someone who is fit Mahmood or Lewis perhaps but with our manager it woudnt surprise me if he picked th same eleven.

Chappy_112 Posted on 5/12 12:47
re: Australia v ENGLAND.

Why do England do this all the time? Like I've said before I don't know loads about cricket but we always seem to do something great by getting 551 then shooting ourselves in the foot with missed chances and the game basically turned on Giles drop on Ponting. Then we just never capitalize on the good things we do then some poor decisions by the batsmen and we capitulate again. Although I think it was Strauss and Harmy were never out.

Time for changes, Panesar has to be brought in because he would have done something with those rough patches today without a doubt.

DUncan Fletcher has done a fantastic job for English cricket - but I don't agree about consulting the team when picking ut - the captain yes, but that should be it.

And if it is true that Flintoff doesn't want Panesar in the team he should be stripped of the captaincy now - If he honestly thinks Giles is a better player he doesn't deserve the honour of being the captain.

C'MON ENGLAND, do the right thing.

I was reading on teletext this morning that fletcher said vaughan wont be playing a part n any of the 5 tests. If this is the case why on earth has vaughan gone with the squad? Sureley they knew before the start of the series that he wouldnt be fit, in which case they could ave taken another player (batter) with them.

Celestron Posted on 7/12 9:47
re: Australia v ENGLAND.

M_D_B...Michael Vaughan isn't part of the squad he is with the academy squad out in Western Ausralia trying to regain his fitness.

Morning Raymondo..Have you gotten over that shambles from the other morning..no me neither and yet if you look at this Australian team apart from Ponting who is just class, Hussey and as always Warne they are quite ordinary in fact man for man I would have our players over there's. So how did this collapse happen?..I have always believed that ever since Warne bowled Gatting around his big fat arse all those years ago England batsmen have crapped themselves whenever Warne comes on to bowl it is purely phsycological (does that look right]) no other country has the same problem with Warne as we do.

We go overthere and it's a one day match against some up country XI then a couple of shitty 2 day games then it's the first test what kind of preperation is that?.

Pillocks like David Graveney and the rest of the Cricketing heirachy want chasing...I see that Alec Stewart was sticking up for Fletchers team selection yesterday saying that he is the man on the spot and can see what the conditions are like and makes his selection on that basis and that we should leave him alone....looks like the snivelling toerag is after a place on the Test and County Cricket Board and unfortunately he will probably get it they love snivellers and crawlers like Stewart.

I'm surprised they've persevered with Gerant Jones to be honest. To think they supposedly picked him for this Ashes series due to his "batting prowess". He's cack.

Your right thats why they picked him big mistake in my eyes surely the way to go is pick your specialised w/k as theres not a deal in them with the batting anyway imho!!! ok Jones is the better batsman but Read is by far the better w/k so it's Read everytime for me .

As with the Jones and Read debate about wether you pick the best w/k or batsman the same applies to Monty and Giles!!! Giles is by far the better batsman but Monty is the better spinner by far!! England need to go with Monty imho as we must pick our best batsman,w/k and bowlers available ffs.

But the worst thing is that Jones has unbelievably been given the job for the 5 tests it's like Southgate saying to Parnaby you are the first choice for the whole season no matter how bad you play...Crackers decision but then the whole selction policy plus agreeing to the useless schedule of 2 day games which do not give us time to prepare is also barmy....shooting ourselves in the foot.

re: Australia v ENGLAND.

now then....i've just got back from 8 days in Oz...I took in days 1,3 and 4 of the Adelaide test. England were on a par with Australia all the way, but were let down by poor concentration and a lack of application under pressure- traits that i thought they'd left behind over the last couple of years.

It's clear that Warne and McGrath are no longer as much of a threat as they once were, however, they do still have the capacity to change games given their exceptional skills and experience. Harmison needs to step up to the plate to help take some of the workload off of Hoggy and Fred, and Panesar has to play in place of Giles- everyone i spoke to out in Oz (english and australian couldn't believe why Giles had been picked). The 5th bowling place should probably go to Mahmood, as i think he would be more of a threat than Anderson, and can replace Giles at 8 in the batting.

Austalia's batting is vulnerable in certain areas (Hayden, Langer, Gilchrist, Symonds). Martyn has already fallen on his sword, but Ponting and Hussey are right on their games at the moment, which makes Giles' drop of punter in the last test all the more irritating!! Clarke is also playing very well as he knows he's been let back in and has to make the most of his chance.

All in all, England need to display some of the gumption shown by Collingwood and Hoggy and they will be far more competitive. The trouble is, at 2 up in the series, the Aussies are flying now and will be very hard to stop (especially if they win the toss and bat 1st in this test).

re: Australia v ENGLAND.

I know practically nothing about cricket but I'm getting there.
To me our experience seems to be getting that little bit of edge over you lot.
Both teams have made 2 headscratching decisions; Ricky chose not to make you lot follow on in the first test, which could have been a terrible decision, and Freddy declared when in retrospect batting on would have been more prudent.
Both these decisions could have left the captains red-faced and one of them did; I think sometimes in these situations you have to take a bit of a gamble and there's a bit of luck involved but I think experience gives us the edge.
Tripley - don't agree about Warney. He's getting on but he was almost unplayable in that last innings.

ray192 Posted on 12/12 21:57
re: Australia v ENGLAND.

Timboi

He's getting on yes but still a world class bowler no doubt about that!!! unplayable i disagree with that the English batsman let themselfs down by not adapting a positive approach to the second innings from the start . You have more experience yes and it's telling at times we've been very naive .

I was reading ceefax this morning and Flintoff reckons that there is plenty of character in the side..Err lets see now.. Adelaide Final Day England 2nd inns..1-31 2-69 3-70 4-72 5-77 6-94 7-97 8-105 8-119 10-129....if you say so Freddie.

Stuar_Tripley Posted on 13/12 9:11
re: Australia v ENGLAND.

the atmosphere was fantastic Ray...i'll try and upload some photos later. the Adelaide Oval is a beautiful setting, and you can go up on the hill (or mound as they called it) and enjoy the banter.

Timboi, Warney is still a great player, but his influence isn't as all-encompassing as it once was. 2nd innings in Brissy and 1st innings in Adelaide he went for over 100 at 4 an over...that would never have happened to the old Warne. Yes, he will still get his 700 wkts in this series, and will still cause us many problems...but understandably, age is catching up with him (even if all he has to do is ensure his shoulder stays OK).

For what it's worth, i rekcon he'll still tour England in 09.
