£8.5 million doesn't seem like a 'drop in the ocean' for the council.

Not that that makes it right to sell it.

The demolition of the CSI and Infirmary were a disgrace, however.

Hoof - far far too many holes appearing in Middlesbrough - holes in the bricks and mortar or holes in the trees. Great that you filmed this Craig - so sad that another green lung is to be ripped out of the conurbation.

Fancy knocking down unoccupied derelict buildings. Whatever next?

But at least they saved the porch from the Infirmary should look nice tacked onto the front of the tin shack ALDI store. A suitable gateway to the former Infant Hercules now stumbling somewhat.

My understanding that it became unoccupied and derlic because it was bought by Aldi and it was in there interest for it to fall in that state.

Had MBC knocked back the planning for a Superstore selling beans at 10p a tin, it would have been converted by one of the other interested developers.

As for the woods, there is plenty of brown field sites on Teesside which should be used before green belt land

In the case of the Infirmary, it belonged to the NHS. Their guidelines for getting rid of unwanted/unused/closed down buildings is to sell to the highest bidder!

So it hasn't got anything to do with the Council.

Aldi wouldnt have bought it if they knew they couldnt get planning permision. Apparently they knew they could.

re: HOT AIR MAYOR HEATS UP PLANET - SHOCKER!

So tell us how it would be justified for ALDI'S planning permission to be refused?

"cos we don't like ALDI"

"cos ALDI" is cheap and Nasty

"cos ALDI have rubbish looking buildings?"

re: HOT AIR MAYOR HEATS UP PLANET - SHOCKER!

You cant refuse planning permission because you dont like a companies products or think they are cheap an nasty, however my understanid is that you could if you thought the building was not going to inhance the area.

From what I have seen, their stores would look more at home on the Riverside Ind Est than one of the first ones you see while driving into the town.

Middlesbrough has too few old buildings. It wouldn't be so bad if there are getting replaced by eye catching new ones, but thats not the case is it?

ccole - good point about the look of the building. However, unless the building is in an 'environment area' (see link when I find it) the process is a bit shakey.

Not the link I wanted, but the right scheme...

RobFMTTM - cheers for coming down, your dad was superb and you too but i had be ruthless in the cutting room!

Sent out a ton of emails to the Century in Stone mailing list with the link to the clip. Also, the Gazette are running the story tomorrow and are putting the clip on their site too!

Yearby - 8.5m is no drop in the ocean but on that basis how much is any open public space worth? How much is quality of life worth? Mallon claims strongly to be for the environment and against anti-social behaviour but is doing the complete opposite. Kids need open spaces or they roam the streets/ or get fat in sitting in the house.

As for the Infirmary - if it was in Newcastle it would have been saved. It was very historic and for that reason bloody rare in Boro. It could have been restored and another use found for it. It was also opposite one of the main slip roads to the town. Does Aldi present the image of a town allegedly "moving forward" ???

Middlesbrough council is like a computer with no monitor - useless.

re: HOT AIR MAYOR HEATS UP PLANET - SHOCKER!

Infirmary - Aldi keep getting refused planning permission for their tin shack but having bought the Infirmary they were therefore entitled to pull it down. The real crime here is that the council is not sending out any messages at all about wanting to conserve the town's fast diminishing heritage - or green spaces. Surely they need to be making it very clear that they see the way ahead as building on the past as well building for the future.

Who else feels sad when they walk away from the ground down Corporation Road and just see great big holes where there used to be buildings?
