I Think I Understand But Will it Work?

Southgate has signalled his intent at a clearout of the deadwood.
Parlour, Ehiogu and Mendieta are over the hill, on high wages and aren't contributing to the first team. Good decision by Gareth to get rid.

I agree with getting shot of Maccarone, he's simply not good enough for the Premiership. In 90% of the leagues around the world I believe Maccarone would be a relative success but he's just not strong enough, physically or mentally. We all know it but cos of his attitude and those important goals, all of us want him to succeed. He's non existent away from home and you can't have a forward who only scores at home. It's not going to happen for him so get rid and give someone else a chance, whether it's Nugent or A N Other.

Regarding Rochemback, he's obviously an excellent footballer in terms of passing, vision, commitment but he's just not athletic enough. The common denominator for the best midfielders in the Premiership, apart from the above, is athleticism. Viera, Lampard, Gerrard, etc. are all pure athletes with the ability to get about the pitch. Rochemback is severely lacking in this department which is why he'll always blow hot and cold.

So all in all I believe these are good strong decisions from Gareth but, and it's a big BUT, can he attract the necessary replacements. The players we've been linked with so far don't excite me or convince me. January is make or break time for Gareth, he will free up some money but we need real athletes with big hearts and ability. Quality, consistent, Premiership players.

This is the key for me. He's tinkered and failed and maybe he's trying to turn things round too soon but we need quality players to push on. Gareth, you need to pull some quality out of the bag.

re: I Think I Understand But Will it Work?

What do you mean when you say he's tinkered and failed??

I would say he's still trying to find a team to play the way he wants them to, which is not that surprising really.

The fact that he seems so willing to part with all those players would suggest at the very least he is confident of getting in new players to replace them. We are desperately short of numbers in front of that back four.

re: I Think I Understand But Will it Work?

He's tinkered with different formations but we've been awful and now he's realised that he needs a change of personnel.

Surely he should have known what formation he wanted to play before he took over. So far he's played every formation imaginable without success.

I don't doubt he's confident that he'll get replacements but I do doubt whether they are quality replacements. We don't want a team of Euells.

re: I Think I Understand But Will it Work?

You make it sound as though we're bottom of the league with a Sunderland-like number of points.

re: I Think I Understand But Will it Work?

We are 5th bottom and got knocked out of the League cup by Notts County. Face reality.

re: I Think I Understand But Will it Work?

I am. Things aren't great at the moment. He needed to sort the defence quickly and build from there.

He now needs to get rid of the deadwood and sort the midfield out. It was always going to be a job starting in January and probably not finished until the summer.

We'll then start to see Southgate's Middlesbrough.

Did you think the defence or the midfield was the priority?

re: I Think I Understand But Will it Work?

When teams drastically cut their wage bills, it would always be said they were cutting their cloth accordingly for the championship(or whatever).
If we get in decent quality repalcements then obviously we wouldnt be, but if we dont.....

re: I Think I Understand But Will it Work?

Any of the lads at Guisborough catch your eye, think they could do a job for us??

re: I Think I Understand But Will it Work?

That doesn't answer the question. Was the defence or the midfield the priority?

re: I Think I Understand But Will it Work?

The defence for me. We had one centre back left or so it seemed in Riggott and I think he's crap, anyway.

defence because the season before we were simply awful at the back, i think we should have brought a cm aswell but hopefully we'l be buying one in jan

re: I Think I Understand But Will it Work?

I think we tried to get Barton as well, so he obviously knows that we need someone in there, but that cheers me that a) he knows there is a deficiency there and b) there are some funds available.

Euell is a squad player, nothing more nothing less. It just so happens that he has played for a prolonged period in the Premier League so at least knows what to do, even if the ability isn't sufficient for him to be a regular starter.

Opposite of Rochemback really.

But weren't we crap at the back because they got no protection from our piss poor midfield?

re: I Think I Understand But Will it Work?

I must say, with our past record in the January transfer window, it does worry me what team we will end up as of 1st Feb, and where we will be in the league.

Desperately need the midfield strengthening, but as we won't pay over the odds, give a daft fee to agents, and coupled with the fact that we are hardly a very attractive proposition at the moment, we could be in for a bit of a shock when bidding for players.

I very much hope I am proved wrong.

re: I Think I Understand But Will it Work?

Mixture of factors, but the sheer shortage of centre backs and Franckie leaving meant we needed to do something there.

You could argue that the defence was so poor that the midfield spent too much time bailing them out to concentrate on getting the ball moved forwards.

re: I Think I Understand But Will it Work?

I agree Heaton, January will be a key time. If we don't have a good second half of the season then our crowds will drop alarmingly.

Captain, Boateng has never been able to go forward. There's a case for both arguments but what is aimportant now is at least two massive signings in the transfer window. I hope we don't roll out the old excuses when we fail again.
