| Cask McEwans 80/- - FAO Janplanner | |
Which beancounting fuckwitter in your organisation is responsible for delisting (specifically in the Diggers) one of the planets finest cask ales - I want names. Especially if its the same fuckwitter who believes that (the admittedly very fine) Caley 80/- is an adequate replacement. There's going to be a right racket in Edinburgh when every single one of those graves opposite starts spinning at this decision.

80 bob is awesome. Surely someone could start a campaign to bring it back.

if i remember rightly, it was actually the trading company - scottish brewers, who chose to delist this, rather than head office, who are usually the people who want to get rid of small volume products. it had all been agreed before we even got involved. it's the person who sits opposite me that usually deals with delists, so i'll have a proper look into it tomorrow and let you know. i believe the keg version wasn't offered as that's got a ticking clock over it too. sorry.

don't the bean counters in your organisation realise that you are taking my enjoyable, taxable, god given right to kill myself, away?

Just to get this right lads I'm talking about Cask 80/- not the brewed for Teesside 80/- which I would like to think still has a future like just Worthy Ale, Magnet and Imperial, our own Teesside specific quartet of proper mans keg ale at proper mans abv. So lets just leave Jan to do her job and save the pelters for if she comes back with the wrong answer.

well it's not actually my job but i'll look into it. basically there are volume thresholds for different products. if people aren't drinking enough then the volume drops below the threshold and the delist process starts. it's bloody difficult to get things delisted though, as there are so many parties that have to agree before it goes. however i think the cask 80/- was different, it was the trading company who agreed it, before it came near our process. i'll find out more tomorrow.

does 'delisting' mean they are no longer making it ?

just read the BBC on this - another needless nail in the coffin of decent beer. Cask needs to be promoted better and they just try to sell that fizzy cr*p

i am glad you told me that. as soon as I finish writing this , I'll hand myself in...

| re: Cask McEwans 80/- - FAO Janplanner | |
i'm afraid the 80/- cask is definitely gone. the threshold for delist is 10,000 barrels per year. if you want to keep drinking your mcewans 80/- special (specially brewed for teesside, as peako said), then you need to up your intake gentlemen. sadly, young lads seem to prefer lager these days, and the volumes keep dropping.

Your lot seem quite happy to get 1664 brewed anywhere. Could you not get it brewed at a contract brewer like Belhaven? At least it would still be brewed in Scotland.

| re: Cask McEwans 80/- - FAO Janplanner | |
i've actually had a row with someone i work with about this, this morning. asking can it not be switched to a smaller brewer and be included in the guest ale scheme. but they seem intent on knacking up their own herritage. unfortunately i'm not really in a position to influence the decision. and i have passed on your 'fuckwitted beancounter' comment.

Would be nice to have a choice. Can't remember the last time I was in a ber that didn't sell John Smiths. When I started drinking it was only sold in 1 of the pubs I drank in.

Jan I can imagine you have tried, and its a bit of a bugger the complaint coming from someoune who only ever drinks it a max of 3 times a year and always in the same pub. I've been in this industry long enough to know however that losing a diamond like Cask 80/- and then rediscovering it actually can be a success via the very expensive route of having to buy the entire new brewer making a killing from it is a lesson that should be learn't the first time round. How is Caley 80/- doing btw (smiley winky thing),

speaking of promoting cask ale .ive heard that john smiths cask is geting a big makeover and is going to be advertised across the country, but i have also heard that they are dropping the abv to make it more apealing to the younger drinker.anybody seen it yet?

| re: Cask McEwans 80/- - FAO Janplanner | |
where did you hear that, jam? and caley 80/- is fine. luckily the brand still belongs to caledonian, so we can't delist it, even if we wanted to!
