Worst ever decision in the history of footie?

Was that free kick awarded to Fulham at the end the worst decision ever? I'm bemused...

probably that time when we scored against one of the welsh teams in the cup at ayresome. the ball had crossed the line but the goal wasn't given. This may have only happned in my mind.

What goes around comes around Fridge. I still shudder when I think about the Chesterfield 'goal' that was disallowed in the semi - about three feet over the line. It would have made it 3-1, I think, and we'd have been dead, buried and humiliated.

true, we would have been. luck was on our side that day, eventually.

Chesterfield was a travesty and I think of it everytime I hear some paranoid idiot talk about "all the decisions going against unlucky Boro." We should have been dead and buried and watching as Chesterfield beat Chelsea at Wembley.

Second worst decision.... not turning up at Blackburn.

bristol city at ayresome park?

match heading for a draw and city break away, round the keeper and knocks it the wrong side of parky who sticks a hand out to stop the goal bound effort....play on says the ref and boro hoof it clear, ripper's latches onto it and puts boro 1 up in the dying seconds!

i bet the 15 city supporters who were there that day are still fuming about it!

re: Worst ever decision in the history of foo

the chesterfield 'goal' was AFTER the ref had blown the whistle for a foul by the forward for climbing. Its irrelivant if it was over the line, the whistle had already gone. Juninho was absolutely outstanding that day....possibly the best individual boro player performance in living memory.

The worst decision in footballing history, step forward Mr Howard Wilkinson and explain why you decided to sell Eric Cantona to Manchester United for about 500K!

Remember that game against Man City when Danny Tiatto ran half the length of the field and scored only for the ref to rule offside against another player who was no where near the ball. I reckon that decision stopped us from getting relegated that season.

Its funny how no pundit ever mentions this, you can clearly see the ref with the whistle at his mouth.

What about Foggons header against Liverpool in the cup?
Can't remember what year.
It was in the Anfield Road End. 000s of Boro fans... cross came in foggon pounced and it was definately over the line. In fact I'm sure we all saw the net bulge (!!!!) or maybe not.
Anyway - not given and we went on to lose.

re: Worst ever decision in the history of footie?

West Ham's second "goal" at Upton Park last season was pretty bad. I'm not convinced the ball was even on the line, let alone over it.

Capybara Posted on 28/12 12:49
re: Worst ever decision in the history of footie?

There have been plenty of as bad decisions over the years but few have had the 'benefit' of umpteen cameras to scrutinise aftwerwards - though last night's was more blatantly bad than most. But shouldn't 'badness' take into account factors such as context. OK it was in the last minute. OK it was a relegation-threatened team with new manager needing every point it can get. But the kick wasn't in an immediately threatening position. It allowed Fulham to get a ball into the box, that's all. Charlton had an opportunity to defend it and failed. Besides, Franck Queudrue scored and he's in my Fantasy League team

re: Worst ever decision in the history of footie?

Weren't we in pole position with two or three games to go to win the title, just prior to WW2 breaking out, when an opposing forward threw the ball into our net as a joke? Everyone laughed, but the ref let it stand to the amazement of both sides.

re: Worst ever decision in the history of footie?

It spoils the romantic story, for the media, they think that if they repeat it often enough everyone will just think it must be true. Boro fluked their way to the final.

re: Worst ever decision in the history of footie?

fridge - you are right, the game was against Cardiff and it was Kav's shot I believe, that was even more over the line than Mendes' against ManUre, yet for some reason it is Mendes' shot which is talked about most often.

We went on to lose the game against Cardiff when Pearsy let one through his legs towards the end of extra time ...

I think it was tottenham or arsenal this season were the ball was half way in the goal and the keeper pulled it back out and the ref did not give the goal.I didnt watch the game last night so i cant really comment

Boromart Posted on 28/12 16:50
re: Worst ever decision in the history of footie?

giving a goal when the ball is clearly not over the line has to be worse than not giving a goal when it should be.

The ref can only give what he sees. Take the Mendes 'goal' for example. The view the ref and linesman had, they could not give it, because they were near the halfway line. Its unlucky but you can understand why the ref didn't give it.

The West Ham goal against us last year, is much much worse. The linesman couldn't have seen it go in, because it didn't. Yet he gave a goal based on the reaction of players, and ana ssumption that it must have gone in. That is a much worse decision, because its inexcusable and goes against the basic rule of reffing - you give what you see.

Here's one that went against us. Festa's 'offside' goal in the cup final.

Or starting the game a minute late.

re: Worst ever decision in the history of foo

several seasons ago the Arabs were playing Motherwell and scored-the ball hit the back stantion (inside net) and bounced out.A Motherwell player caught the ball and booted it upfield (for kickoff) only for Ref (Les Mottram) not only NOT give a goal but didn't give a penalty for handball either

So the worst ever Double decision in history of football
