Biggest selling newspaper in the country also isn't it.

The bloke at work says he buys it for the sports coverage which looks like it's been written by a bunch of 10 year olds. There doesn't seem to be any intelligence, more thought is given to thinking up 'amusing' headlines.

| re: Is 'The Sun' a newspaper? | |
A newspaper is a publication containing news, information and advertising, usually printed on low-cost paper called newsprint. It may be general or special interest, most often published daily or weekly. So it (only just) meets the definition.

I think Jade Goody probably reads the Sun, or looks at the pictures. Do you still need to have failed 8 CSE's to complete the crossword?

The assumption is that people read a newspaper for 'news' thereby gaining knowledge of events happening outside of their immediate experience and broadening their own knowledge. I do not think this is why people buy The Sun, or why it actually exists. So, why do people buy invest time and money in it?
| Rondo_1 Posted on 16/1 11:01 | |
| re: Is 'The Sun' a newspaper? | |
I read pretty much all newspapers that we buy at work, I read them to fill in my break times. The Sunday Sport is the funniest paper by far. It cheers me up no end. I can't stand the independant or Observer but do read the Telegraph. The Mail and Express are carp except for the Questions people write in trying to find out answers (in the mail I think). The Sun and Star are ideal for what I want. If you want real news why not watch the TV news for the news today instead of yesterdays news.

Rondo, what exactly is 'real news'?
| fexile Posted on 16/1 11:03 | |
| re: Is 'The Sun' a newspaper? | |
would definitely read the sun ahead of the daily express (aka the diana daily), but that's not saying much. You've got to admire the humour in the sun at times and the headline writers are very talented People who read it for a laugh don't bother me, those that look to the sun for their politics/attitude to anything non-british do

Sleaford that was funny about the Teesside Times - lmao!

| re: Is 'The Sun' a newspaper? | |
Real News is about current home and foreign problems. Tosh news is 'Mary Evans 84 from Southport had to call the fire brigade due to her Dyson sucking up her pet cat.' Just in my opinion like.

| re: Is 'The Sun' a newspaper? | |
I'll read any paper thats avaliable, I'll only buy the local evening paper though.
| DrBuck Posted on 16/1 11:11 | |
| re: Is 'The Sun' a newspaper? | |
So real News is concerned with events that affect your life and life on this planet? Things that make you think about why you are here and what you are doing? Why wouldn't you want to know about that?
| Rondo_1 Posted on 16/1 11:12 | |
| re: Is 'The Sun' a newspaper? | |
Because the news in the newspapers is a day old.

It was years ago but has always stuck with me, I presume whoever wrote it was a former clue writer on 3-2-1, maybe even Dusty himself.

| re: Is 'The Sun' a newspaper? | |
The Sun is the most important paper in the country because it is a mass circulation consciously agenda-setting daily that speaks directly to (and claims to speak for) the non-political working class swing voter. It is populist, culturally conservative and vaguely rightward leaning on most social issues and neo-liberal on econimic ones but has a touch of radicalism at times and knows how to play to the gallery with short-lived campaigns that cause a fuss but change little(a bit like Tony Blair). And it can deliver. Because it speaks to swing voters it has a massive electoral influence that the Times and Socialist Worker can only dream off. That is why Blair makes all his policy U-turn announcements in the Sun. He is terrified of crossing it. It is the most obvious expression of the frightening power Rupert Murdoch has over Britain's political machine.

I think people will look back at that show in years to come and presume we all had either a.)some form of super intelligence or b.)mental retardation. Only time will tell.

In my office we were extremely amused to see the Sun refer to the Daily Sport today as a down market newspaper. No dispute about the Sport's status, but surely pots and kettles spring to mind!! Poor old Keely by the way!!!
