| NTL techy question - help | |
OK. I want to add a new e-mail addy to my NTL account. I go to log-in at NTL but it asks me for my username (no problem) and my password (problem) - I have tried the three variations that I use for most accounts - none of them work. There doesn't seem to be a option to ask for your password, only to change it (for which you need to know your old password) What I am trying to avoid is phoning them and waiting for ages to speak to someone. Anyone got a workaround?

No, unfortunately you would need to phone them. Or get another email address (gmail perhaps).

There is a way to retrieve your password if you have your account set up in Outlook (or similar email client) but the time it'd take for me to explain it you could have called NTL and had it sorted. Unless you have changed it your NTL password is a letter and a long list of numbers, so trying your common ones probably won't help either.

Yoda - try me! I am poised with Outlook open - Anything is preferable to ringing NThell (If its an ar5e on - I won't be offended if you decline)

okiedokie 1: download TCPTrace from the link below. Unpackit and run it (it doesn't need to be installed) 2: enter the following settings in the dialog box that pops up. listen on port: 11000 destination server: pop.ntlworld.com destination port: 110 then press the "ok" button 3: in outlook, go to "tools" then "account settings" (apologies if the menu items are called something slightly different in your outlook, I'm on 2007) 4: change the POP server for your NTL account from "pop.ntlworl.com" to "127.0.0.1" and the port to "11000" (without the quotes). Save these changes. 5: hit "send and receive" in Outlook and check the display in TCPTrace. What you should see is some POP traffic going between your PC and NTL and your username and password in plain text, prefixed by "USER" and "PASS" 6: retrieve password, then put your original settings back into Outlook (pop.ntlworl.com and port 110)

| re: NTL techy question - help | |
You need to change the port to 11000 like Yoda said. It will fail on port 110. Doh, 0 out of 10 for following instructions.

It still said 110 in the error message, so I'd have a double-check.

Oh, ok then. You didn't close that tcptrace did you, and you *did* press ok? (leaves to yoda)

| re: NTL techy question - help | |
Ah, I know what it is. You've got 127.0.0.1 in the account name and pop3.ntlworld.com in the server name still according to that error message. Swap em. --- Post edited by trodbitch on 26/2 23:25 ---

OK So I go to NTL and log in succesfully. I create an e-mail address (teessideband.archive@ntlworld.com) click ok, and at the end of the process I get: Error in creating mailbox: InvalidCosDomain wtf?

You aren't going to like this.... Just did a search on a ntl forum and it appears this fault occurs with some mailboxes and has been since 2004(!) ntl have said, well I'll just copy and paste what their tech support said on the forum: "Posted by: ntltscstaff Dec 12 2006, 03:16 PM Invalid Cos Domain is an error our end. It is ongoing, it cannot be identified why it happens, and there is no estimated fix time. Sorry if that sounds vague, but from what I can gather, any accounts that currently get that message will always get it, and so to set up new addresses you will have to contact tech support." Just did a test email to see if it has worked - no way! Damn, and indeed, blast. NThell strikes again. Oh well, if you want to e-mail to the Teesside Band Archive, you can't.

| re: NTL techy question - help | |
When you do call them, get them to set up email accounts under the name somethingyouremember1@ntlworld.com - somethingyouremember11@ntlworld.com The address doesn't matter. That way you can go in and rename them yourself now and in the future as and when you need them.

| re: NTL techy question - help | |
fastcakes, if you want an email address, send me an email to neil.trodden@gmail.com and I'll invite you to that. It is web based but can be setup to be used through outlook. And there's pretty much unlimited space (3000MB) so you won't run out. And you get to keep it for life if you leave ntl.

Sorry, I went to bed just after my last post. Glad you got your password back, bummer about the other NTL problem. For better email management I recommend buying a domain name, that way you can keep your email address regardless of your ISP. My address @block17.co.uk will never change, and I've moved between NTL, Demon and Pipex over the last few years. You can register a .co.uk for a few pounds a year, teessidebandarchive.co.uk is taken though, is it you?
