Setanta - Premiership matches

So, I've just spotted an ad for Setanta, offering 46 live Premiership matches starting in August for £10.99 per month.

All part of the "new deal", brought about by the EU ruling that Sky had a monopoly.

It was apparently done in the interests of we, the consumers.

Is it me being dim, or does this "new deal" mean that I will have to pay out twice for the same service?

Is there any (legal) way out of this strait-jacket?

Just don't subscribe to Setanta?

re: Setanta - Premiership matches

Oh yeah, it's extra money on top, of course.

Would you expect it any other way?

so that's -

£120 for a tv licence
£15 a month for basic sky
£11 a month for Sentanta
£18 for sky sports

And all for the likes of Darren Purse or whoever to get a helicopter to and from work.

It's not worth it. If everyone was to sack off Sky then things migh happen...

petrio:

Sorry, I'm working on the presumption that I want to watch EVERY premiership game broadcadt, something I have done for many years.

I guess what I'm trying to find out is, do Sky intend to reduce their monthly charge for Premiership matches because they will be showing fewer games?

re: Setanta - Premiership matches

You know, if it bothers you that much, you could just, you know, not get either and spend the money saved on something else?

It's all about options, just get one or the other?

re: Setanta - Premiership matches

jeez no 10 calm down!

I KNOW it's a "choice", and to be honest money isn't a problem, i've get more than enough to pay for both, but I am just making a comment about the fact that the EU's intention was to assist the consumer and they have ended up penalising them (us).

Even though I can easily afford both, the idea you should pay twice for something is worth investigating.

re: Setanta - Premiership matches

Thanks for the breakdown Turner.

So, leaving aside the license fee and the basic sky (I have sky+ HD anyway) the payments are as follows:

£18 for sky sports
£11 for setanta
£50 prem plus (per annum)

so for £398 per year I can see all the legally broadcast Premiership matches next season.

I am calm!?

It is all about choice, it means sky don't have a total monopoly over EPL games, allowing other companies such as Setanta a slice of the action.

If you choose to buy both, it's at your discretion. It's about fair competition.

If you get Setanta you also get Serie A, Bundesliga and SPL games, with Sky you get EPL and La Liga, it depends what you want.

You could just buy one, and if the particular game you want isn't on, you can just go to the pub and watch it?

re: Setanta - Premiership matches

pick and choose your games and go to the pub... Spend your £300 on a couple of pints per game. Thats what I do.
Put on two stone in the process mind.

Santan have the scottish games and they seem to be OK but you cant get it on Virgin/NTHell i dont think.

number_10 Posted on 18/3 11:28
re: Setanta - Premiership matches

Nah, i'm sure you can get it on NTL juno, although after the transition to virgin i'm not so sure. Can't imagine it's been removed though.

It's simple economics. Mroe competition drives down prices eventually.

re: Setanta - Premiership matches

I have watched the scottinsh prem games on Santana on Sky but my old man who has NTL has to come to my house to watch it...... He must just want me to buy his beer. lol that sounds like him, like

re: Setanta - Premiership matches

You definately could subscribe to it on NTL! Looks like someone owes you some beers!

re: Setanta - Premiership matches

you can get setanta on freeview cant you??

Vlad_The_Kinder Posted on 18/3 11:54
re: Setanta - Premiership matches

The Setanta games from August are the "premiership plus" package that Sky have had previous seasons. As most here know, these games were available on Sky or Virgin for a £50 season ticket or £8 a game. Setanta will be charging £10.99 a month. But that includes live football from other leagues (French, Dutch, Scottish etc), Golf and american sports (NBA, NHL etc).
For people with freeview you will either have to get a freeview box with a top-up card slot to pay the £10.99 a month or get the new Thomson box that accepts downloads.

re: Setanta - Premiership matches

Junouk - I don't drink (alcohol that is) and I have previously been discouraged from going to the pub because of the stink of smoke - I understand that in August that will no longer be a problem so you may well see me sat in the corner of your local nursing an orange juice.

re: Setanta - Premiership matches

Vlad the kinder -

So are you saying that Sky will NOT be offering a Prem Plus package next season?

PhillyMac Posted on 18/3 12:30
re: Setanta - Premiership matches

I think the problem is that they carved out such a small part of the pie for 'someone else', leaving sky with an 'almost monopoly' of the live games. This means that 'almost nothing' will change.

Here in the US the games are split between Fox and Setanta. The good thing is that because each side shows four games per weekend, you can get by with just one of them, unless you're really determined to have your pick of the games.

paullap86 Posted on 18/3 12:33
re: Setanta - Premiership matches

thought i'd heard earlier on in the season that sky were scrapping prem plus from next season

Vlad_The_Kinder Posted on 18/3 12:40
re: Setanta - Premiership matches

fastcakes:

The 46 games (which was 50 this season) are Setanta's from next season. Sky lost the rights. I've heard that Sky are trying to do a deal with Setanta so their customers (and prehaps NTL/Virgin) will be able to see these games without having to pay the £10.99 monthly sub to Sentanta. Whether that deal will be just pay-per-match or something similar to the £50 for the 46 games deal I'm not sure.
If the deal isn't done then the only way to get these games is to pay to get Setanta.

Vlad - Thanks for the link to old news! (lol)

It kind of answers my questions. Sorry I've been busy!

No probs Fatcakes. I just meant that the news link is a little out of date!
Digital Spy is a good place to keep up to date with kind of stuff.
Here's a link that discusses Sky Sports and Setanta
