News media consistency re Rome

Was our situation last year, as far as I can work out identical except we didn't really get involved in fighting back, reported as the second item on the national news?

Do you really care?

Yes, almost, but they are a bigger club with a bigger media interest and had more fans there. Plus we didn't react so it didn't happen during the game.

Yes, Alf, I do. It's symptomatic of the under-reporting of anything Middlesbrough unless it's smackheads and talking CCTV.

If Newcastle had done what we did ON the pitch last season there'd have been tribute programmes all summer, and we can now prove that if what happened to our support in Rome had happened to Manchester United -- look at the news this morning.

It's a fair point. The problems our supporters had last year were barely reported last year yet Man Utd's involvement meant it was deemed worthy of second item on last night's BBC 10 o'clock news. Though I thought Fiona Bruce's use of the word 'spunking' was a tad inappropriate

Is the newsworthiness of an event dependant on whether there are moving pictures available then?

Pretty much.

In this day Buddy, absolutely yes. Even better if you have a helicopter "hooly CAM" to give you a birds-eye view.

That's one of the reasons why the talking CCTV was picked up by the TV media especially.

Easy to cover for them. All the work already done for them; just needed a bit of mindless comment to complete.

I am normally tuned into R5 on a morning, nothing else media wise. Not once did they reference the trouble with MFC fans last year and how a number of fans were stabbed and one lost a lung. One more thing, just because there is a bit of baton bashing that is caught on TV it seems that what goes on away from the cameras is irrelevant. Given a choice would you rather be bashed with a baton in the ground or stabbed outside?
